Sabotaging the Tea Party

In the age of the Internet, every action has a disproportionate and outrageous reaction.

See, for example, the toxic -- and tactically stupid -- response to the rise of the Tea Party that one activist is cooking up. Jason Levin has dedicated himself to destroying the movement, and part of his strategy is publicly declaring that he and his allies are infiltrating the Tea Party:

Whenever possible, we will act on behalf of the Tea Party in ways which exaggerate their least appealing qualities (misspelled protest signs, wild claims in TV interviews, etc.) to further distance them from mainstream America and damage the public’s opinion of them. We will also use the inside information we have gained in order to disrupt or derail their plans.

As if the Tea Party’s fringy elements needed any help. Before this, the dishonest critic could simply point to the scary, straw-man caricature that could be painted of the Tea Party’s most extreme elements on behalf of the rest of the movement. (Common cheap shot: “Look! They’re just racists!”) And more honest critics could cite both anecdote and poll data to question how mainstream the movement really is. (And mainstream it ain’t.)

But Levin and his band are now trying to out-distort the death panel crowd. And the right is trumpeting news of this “crash the Tea Party” effort, because it gives Tea Partyers a way to blame the ugly antics at their rallies on malicious outsiders. Americans might be more willing to believe that the clownish behavior they see at Tea Party rallies is actually the work of Manchurian candidates. Also, representatives of the movement, such as Connecticut organizer Bob MacGuffie, get to say things such as this to the Associated Press: "[Tea Party opponents] can't actually debate our message." Actually, Bob, they’re not even trying to take you on intellectually -- though that is surely doable. Which is exactly why this tactic is so despicable.

In some ways, this episode reminds me of the ACORN gotcha tapes, the mastermind of which later got caught allegedly sneaking into the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.). Both involve individuals cutting ethical corners to kneecap those they see as ideological opponents. The Tea Party movement, too, feeds off of this preference for angry, ill-considered reaction over constructive engagement.

What to make of this political vigilantism? It’s partly a natural effect of the Internet lowering the cost of independent political activity. And it’s partly due to Americans losing faith in social institutions such as political parties.

Commentators on the right and the left variously defend the activation of rowdy populists in the Tea Party, among the netroots and elsewhere. But as the Tea Party’s misbehavior -- and that of those rising up in reaction to it -- demonstrates, there is a troubling dark side to this activism, too.

Let me get this straight: this so-called Manchurian candidate publicly declares his intentions to infiltrate the Teabaggers with outrageous signs and slogans. What. An. Idiot. You can't be an effective Manchurian candidate and tell everyone what you intend to do. Everyone will be looking for the behavior.

I just got an e mail from Josh Marshall endorsing the idea of the infiltration of the Tea Party demonstrations, so the story seems to have some legitimacy and is gaining traction.

With wild accusations by Democratic party legislators of racist comments which have yet to be proven and a Republican party worker assaulted and in the hospital in New Orleans the other day, if you haven't noticed, the situation is beginning to spin out of control.

In attending a tea party in Los Angeles last year, it was amazing how normal the crowd was. More like a 4th of July picnic.

with Millbank's takedown of Obama in today's edition, I would look at the Left as the crazies.

No one is infiltrating the Tea Party. Jason Levin is actually a right-wing operative pretending to be a left-wing activist pretending to be a Teabagger.

This is an absurd story. After the spitting, bigoted slur shouting, vandalism, death threats, plane crash and so much more, the mouthpieces of the 'tea party' psychos want to see that the ever-growing list of insanity was from infiltrators.

Why are people so scared of a group of people who are not democrats. First rule of debate when your opponent begins using personal denigrations not only does he lack the intellect to defeat but the social skills to defend. When people are scared, they cast aspersions beyond logic.

It may be unethical but it's not stupid or that unusual these days among internet activists in particular. Announcing it serves a purpose, sowing paranoia, discord, and uncertainty and undermining trust in the TP message. It's guerilla warfare, definitely. Not an ineffective tactic, though.

Read the forum posts at Levin's site. A lot of the posters are right-wingers having a good old time bashing liberals and talking about how they can really act out at the TP rallies, and just point the finger right back at 'crash the party.org' for blame.

Besides, most of the liberals I know still have jobs and don't have time to follow the TEA Party express and RV caravan, or go put on 18th century costumes and staple tea bags to their hats just to embarrass a bunch of folks who are, well, walking around in 18th century costumes with tea bags stapled to their hats.

Mr. Stromberg, I refer you to the 1st Amendment which protects the right of the people peaceably to assemble to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Since last year, ordinary Americans, in large groups all over the country have done just that. Last September 12th, approximately 1.7 million patriotic citizens from all over the nation travelled to D.C. for the march on the Capitol. They were orderly, well-behaved, and didn't trash the streets. Other rallies/protests have been conducted in the same manner. However, the liberal media continues to cast these demonstrations in a bad light. I think the liberal media has clearly exposed its bias.

If you look at the Stop the Tea Party site, it is pretty obvious that it is simply a tee shirt sales site disguised as a political manifesto. Too bad, cuz the wing nuts now have a "movement" to blame anybody's bad behavior on. Racist sign? It wasn't a Tea Partier, it was one of those Stop the Tea Party activists. I join in urging that responsible media outlets do some legwork on this.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
So, what you are saying that despite what people see and hear from the tea partiers, the racist signs and rhetoric, because YOU didn't see anything YOU thought was bad then the tea parties are legitimate and it is everyone who doesn't believe what they believe who are the problem? But then because YOU have decided that Democrats have made wild accusations that have not been proven to YOU and a Republican being assaulted some how that makes anything being said by Democrats untrue? Is that what you are implying?

Yes, things are getting out of control. Racists coming out of the woodwork to attack the duly elected President of the United States. People on the right have gone completely overboard and are in complete denial as to the damage their actions are causing our country. Why? All because they don't like the President. They don't like the fact that he is actually accomplishing something that is helping our country. All because they would rather wallow in fear, scare and misery rather than support the President of the United States who was elected by a majority of the country. And it is not about policy. People didn't like Bush/Cheney/Republican policy but they never acted like a bunch of spoiled two year olds.

We have a President who is accomplishing a lot of things that have never been accomplished before. We have a President who is on the job, [not at the ranch] a President who is very smart and can engage others in talking. It is so pathetic watching tea baggers and talks of militia by some Republican leaders who have no idea what is going on around them except what tea baggers and Palin and Gingrich and other less desirables are saying. Wake up Republicans the party of flip floppers, party of no ideas, party of no we haven't read what is in the Health Insurance bill. What exactly is your job description. I am over 70 and was raised in the south. It is all about race, and the Republicans are falling right in with the fear mongers in the tea party.

The Republican party has stooped so low, I doubt if they can ever be a serious national party. They are hyping the November elections, but they will be surprised.

The tea baggers and the Republican Party racist are a disgrace to Ronald Reagan. John Boehner and Mitch McConnell couldn't make a pimple on Reagan's rear end.

The original Tea Party participants in 1775 wanted representation in the British Parliament and felt that taxation without this representation was unfair. They accepted the idea that they would not be a majority; they just wanted their voices to be heard. Eventually, they rebelled on this issue, out of principle.

The present-day Tea Party have representation, but apparently don't believe in majority rule. They lack any kind of principle, because they want taxes to be cut without cutting any of the government spending supported by those taxes except for making nebulous statements about "waste". What spending cuts they do support- like eliminating the Department of Education- would account for only a tiny part of overall government spending.

And then members of this "movement" get upset when the mainstream political parties of both sides of the aisle don't take them seriously. If they want to be taken seriously as a political movement, they need to take a crash course in what their own government does and how it is paid for.

But that would require real work and intellectual effort; it's easier just to shoot off one's mouth in the manner of Sarah Palin or Sean Hannity than it is to come up with constructive solutions to address the nation's problems.

Posted by: stillaliberal | April 13, 2010 11:15 PM | Report abuse

For the sake of curiosity I joined the Tea Party website and perused their blogs and read their articles. I want to know if this group has good ideas and has thought deeply about the issues they appear to fight for. I'll give the Tea Party credit for being fiercely individualistic, which is our American heritage, but I was disappointed by the lack of any substance or rational thought outside of vitriol on bona fide mechanisms to fix deficits and to lower taxes. It is certainly clear the TP's would like to abolish most forms of welfare and they certainly prefer reduced government, but it's not clear if they approve of policies such as Social Security and Medicare. If they want to abolish those programs it will be an uphill fight, even within their own group. The blogs and articles point to many contradictions. I don't think the TP's are unified on issues by any means. I did see a lot of references to Pres. Reagan in regard to fixing deficits, but these poor souls likely don't even realize that deficits exploded under the Reagan presidency, given all his virtues. Reagan himself admitted a soaring deficit was his biggest failure as president. I don't think you want to cite Reagan 's policies if your objective is to eliminate deficits. It is also clear from their website they are worried about infiltrators. They are certainly paranoid, and they are intolerant of opposing views. For these reasons, I don't think this group will become anything more than a fringe spinoff of conservative Republicans.

This calls for counter-intelligence. On April 15, if you think someone is an infiltrator, go over and engage them and try to befriend them. If they freak out, then whip out the video camera. If they run away, then post the video on YouTube and someone will ID them. They will be added to the database of Sorosian Nazi thugs.

The tea party already has another name...Republicans, and they are already well on their way to merging right back into the fold.

The one favor the Tea Party could do for all Americans is crack the 2 party system and finally create a viable 3rd party, but I dont see any evidence they are even going to try.

I note the site uses tea bagger black and white terminology that no real progressive would use. Questions such as "Are you a capitalist or a socialist".

Only the baggers believe that people will actively identify as socialists.

The Post needs to do a little more research here. I'm sure that in a few days this site will be exposed as either a tea bagger or Republican disinfo site and then a whole new round of conspiracy theories will need to be invented.

Stromberg writes: "Tea Party’s misbehavior" ?

On March 20th, on the eve of the historically divisive health care vote, four black Democrats and the least popular Speaker in history… walk through a crowd of knuckledragging Tea Party goons… a extraordinary exercise in hate-baiting... that failed to elicit a single racial epithet or spitting incident.

When the crowd didn't respond… the black Congressmen made it up anyway. Andre Carson (Democrat, Indiana) insisted he heard the N-word 15 times. … yet an ocean of cellphones and cameras captured not one single N-word nor any spitting. A $100,000 reward for ANY footage or evidence remains uncollected.

Arrests at the 1000+ Tea Party protests over last 12 months ? ZERO except for the SEIU thugs who beat up a black conservative. Police say the Tea Partiers are so well-behaved, they pick up their own trash.

Arrests at last weekends Code Pink protest ? FIVE I know its hard to keep track of Code Pink arrests on the Left. G8, G20, MoveOn.org rallies… I mean there are just so many ?

CNN actually sent a black reporter on tour with the Tea Party express.. and his reports are surprisingly filled with pleasantries and non-violence.

As for the tea party in my state, no so much as a parking ticket.. The progressives? A few attacks with a well placed knee kick and spitting, and some fantasmagorical accusations that were total lies that backfired, cooked up by the local Dems and Soros-funded astroturfers, and there you have it... the best of agit-prop then the usual finger pointing claiming it was 'him who dunnit'!!!!

Levin is a school teacher. Nuff said?

PS - Soros is an admitted Nazi enabler who sent his fellow countrymen to their deaths and to this day boasts about it. He should be in jail....

As for spitting, bigoted slur shouting, vandalism, death threats, plane crash and so much more... all came from the left thanks to all the hate being spewed by people who can't defend a president who is doing what no president before him has -- he is destroying and dismantling our government and our country on behalf of Soros.

We didn't need much organization for the love-ins in the sixties when we would all meet in the local parks. We still managed to get the issues of the day discussed.

I feel the reason behind most of our troubles and the need for TEA Parties is the government's ability to print up whatever money it wants to get their way.

Maybe this will help make the danger of fiat money clear.

Imagine you and me are setting across from each other. We create enough money to represent all of the world's wealth. Each one of us has one SUPER Dollar in front of him.

You own half of everything and so do I.

I'm the government though. I get bribed into creating a Central Bank.

You're not doing what I want you to be doing so I print up myself eight more SUPER Dollars to manipulate you with.

All of a sudden your SUPER Dollar only represents one tenth of the wealth of the world!

That isn't the only thing though. You need to get busy and get to work because YOU'VE BEEN STIFFED with the bill for the money I PRINTED UP to get YOU TO DO what I WANTED.

That to me represents what has been happening to the economy, and us, and why so many of our occupations just can't keep up with the fake money presses.

They have been beating us with our own stick!!!!1

They seek to suppress free speech, they seek to demean people with opposing viewpoints, they seek to create falsehood to hide what they are really trying to accomplish. all of these facts point decidedly to a Socialism 101 point of view. And the best comeback they can come up with is last 8 years, last 8 years, Fox news is evil, Palin is a goof, etc.... Friends, not every conservative who supports these free thinkers get's his news from Fox or would vote for a Palin. We sure as heck were not voting for McCain now were we? It is patently un-American to suppress free speech and to try and deny people the freedoms they are assured by the Constitution. Your party radicals try to do both every day. n some ways, this episode reminds me of the ACORN gotcha tapes, the mastermind of which later got caught allegedly sneaking into the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.). Both involve individuals cutting ethical corners to kneecap those they see as ideological opponents
=========
You have some gall to twist the truth like that! No, you could make your analogy if that mastermind infiltrated one your lefty loony anti Bush rallies and started to shout "Down with America!" and "Bush is Hitler and a war criminal!".
But what would be the point if it was the main cry of those insane rallies anyway?

That's the whole point: Left need to infiltrate Tea Parties to manufacture extremism. Left rallies on the other hand are so extremist that no infiltration can add anything to that

The tea party was started and funded by a few wealthy right wing extremists the day after Obama was elected. It has nothing to do with his policies, it has to do with their refusal to accept the results of the election and doing everything possible to de-legitimize his Presidency.

Taxation without representation?? Voters chose their representatives. Tea baggers choose to make fools of themselves.

Bring it on - we have already taken our revenge... as MSNBC and CNN watch their ratings TANK. Only zombies blindly follow their leaders without asking any questions or disagreeing with them at times..The radical Democrats in charge now hijacked the Democratic party in 2008,while the rest of the Democratic party- the HILLARY Democrats - have joined the TEA party and that scares the radicals to death....

to all the Tea Party Patriot HATERS here,

a DARE: meet me at the Washington Monument for the TPP rally 4/15/10 at 6PM & i'll introduce you to some of my friends. LOOK & SEE for YOURSELF, rather than believe what you were told, by the morons who HATE us.

then on Friday morning, i'll expect you to come back here & simply state:

"i was a FOOL, who was STUPID enough to believe the BIGOTS, morons, HATERS & lunatics, out of the most extreme fringe of the DIMocRATS party, with NO actual knowledge whatever.

at the Tea Party Rally, i found that i had been LIED TO & PLAYED for a FOOL, by a "news media", who is in the pocket of the DIMocRATS party bosses & which is NOT at all concerned with telling THE TRUTH.

furthermore, i am ASHAMED that i was FILLED with HATE, against the decent people who belong to the Tea Party Movement, as i have had my eyes tightly CLOSED against other people, based SOLELY on my own IGNORANCE & unthinking PREJUDICE.
i found that the TPP were really no different than me. the TPP are smart, ordinary citizens, who want America to be the best that the republic can be, without need-LESS interfence from the federal bureauracy in our daily lives."

but of course NO real DIMocRAT extremist/lunatic will show up to actually SEE that that the TPP are REALLY like, because their PREJUDICE would "hit them right in the face".

btw, DIMocRATS, WHEN are you going to get the filthy, stinking, KLANSMAN out of your party & out of the U S Senate? - Robert "KKK" Byrd is a CURRENT member "in good-standing" of the KU KLUX KLAN & a national OFFICER of that disgusting group.

DIMocRATS, thy name is HYPOCRITE!

The more the left-wing fanatics hate and fear the TEA PARTY, patriot movement, the more successful the TEA PARTY patriots will be. Let the so-called liberals hate, it adds fuel to the fire.

November is shaping up to be a real disaster for Barack and the Pelosites. It may be a political Katrina bearing down on them.

Then the socialists can go away and tea bag themselves all they want.

to the bobbob,

do you actually expect anyone to believe your SILLY (& OBVIOUSLY STUPID) LIES?

fwiw, the Tea party is POORLY funded. there is NO "national organization; this is a "grassroots citizen's movement" of LOCAL, SELF-funded groups of individuals.- my home county's Tea Party has to "pass the hat" at every meeting to pay to use the church meeting room that we rent for 35.oo per meeting.

the "refreshments" are homemade & paid for by the people who provide them. - currently, i'm personaly paying for the coffee that we serve at the meetings -m about $5.00 a month.

i think you owe every reader her an APOLOGY for LYING, but i don't expect you to be that DECENT, as you are OBVIOUSLY "only vaguely aquainted with" THE TRUTH!

Tea Party Myth

1. It is grass roots.

The man behind the organization is anything but a fresh-faced activist. The architect of the Tea Party Express, Sal Russo, is a California political operative who has spent nearly half a century campaigning for Republican candidates.

And then there is FREEDOMWORKS (DICK ARMEY)who has provided much of the Professionally made signs (the ones spelled correctly)
The Americas Future Fund = a group of LOBBYISTS run by a bunch of THE CHIMP BUSHes buddies
Americans for Prosperity, or AFP, has long been rumored to be financed by David Koch, of the family that owns Koch Industries. That's one of the biggest privately held companies in America, and the family has a long history of underwriting conservative causes

Shall we go on.

You Tea Partiers are being used by a bunch of corporate HO's and are too damn dumb to realize it.

---------

Oh, sure. It is Corporate HQs that want lower taxes on PEOPLE and limited Government. That's GE dream to be left without all those Government contracts, especially in that total fraud green energy area they already left a large footprint in.

Corporate HQ for sure. That's why you won't hear @ Tea Parties about corporate taxes but only about insane tax burden levied on People.

Looks like you missed a couple of latest Liberal talking points updates.

Posted by: pihto999 | April 14, 2010 1:22 PM | Report abuse

pihto999, neo-con lobbyists founded some of the Tea Party organizations back in 2008. It is their attempt to win back power. Corporate sponsorship of the Tea Party rallies is an attempt to deflect attention from the inequities in the tax code. Rally the people against the "liberals" and keep them focused away from railing against corporate welfare. It is a great strategy.

Posted by: lindarc | April 14, 2010 2:14 PM | Report abuse

The irony is that most people attending Tea Party rallies don't bear much of a federal tax burden. 36.5% of all filers pay no net federal tax. A family of four declaring $50,000 in gross income, taking the standard deduction and the child tax credit will have a zero liability and actually receive a $31 dollar check back. This is due to the tax credit enacted last year which is called the "Making Work Pay" credit. Taxes have been lowered under the Obama administration for most working Americans. This is a fact that the Tea Party groups conveniently ignore. Instead they choose to use conjecture and accuse the Obama administration of plotting to raise their taxes, take their guns and bibles away, blah blah blah. This is the same rhetoric the neo-cons used in 1994 before the mid-terms. People fell for it then. Some of those same people are falling for the rhetoric now.

wow! what a novel idea. No one in history has ever thought up Levin's idea of discrediting political opposition; except Nixon and his Watergate. The Tea Party's appeal is it asserts our Bill of Rights that prohibits indentured servitude. Obama's reforms drive up our federal debt and turns private taxpayers into public indentured servants.

Look dude, by age of 70 people should be wiser than at age of 7, meaning that if Pres. Obama's mother was white, that makes him half white so please, stop pointing fingers and stop being the Racist yourself! Just look in the mirror before you'll start blaming everyone!
Just remember, everybody entitled to their own opinion, just like you, USA is still have THE CONSTITUTION, FREEDOM OF SPEECH, thank God, etc., last time I checked! So, just value your FREEDOM, while it's last.
About Health Scare-wait until 500B cut from
Medicare, you'll wait in the Hospitals for the bed and for the doctors, because of the shortage, just like people in UK and Canada. But wait, there is another jem, the new tax called VAT is coming, it's means VALUE TAX, and it's for everything, and I mean, for everything, for food, clothing, electronics and more, because it's no such thing as a FREE LUNCH. So, get ready to pay this big tax, on the top of the our other taxes, it will probably start soon, because they have to pay for the Health Scare,(which will start in 2013 or 2014, but you'll start to pay for this very soon, maybe even in July, or in Jan. 2011)which is going to be much, much worse, then now, as I mention, just like in Canada and UK. You don't have to believe me about this, just go to youtube and check for yourself Canadian and UK Universal Health Scare.
Good luck!
P.S. Older people will be out of luck, because younger people is productive(even illigal immigrants)so,they will be treated first and better, unfortunately, and also because of 500B cut,I mention before.

to all,

i went to one of the 742 Tea Party rallies last night that were held all over the USA, on "tax day".

we had HOPED that we MIGHT get as many as 3-4,000 people to show up on a weekday/"school night" for the rally, that was scheduled from 630-900PM.

in fact 40,000+ people showed up, according to the local police/FD people. =
in point of fact, the PD/FD officers were getting worried, as if "something untoward happened" (like someone getting seriously ill) that it would have been DIFFICULT to get a firetruck/paramedic truck in, quickly.= it takes a while to "clear an emergency lane" in a crowd that large.
(seconds count in many medical emergencies!)

another FACT: we are "adding" about 3% each WEEK to our membership aroungd the country. = at this rate we will soon be larger than the DIMocRAT AND the GOP combined, within the next 3-4 months.
