Fiorina pulls Boxer's hair -- rhetorically speaking

The general election campaign battle in California for U.S. Senate is barely two days old, and it's already gettin' good. The Republican nominee, the stylish former chief of Hewlett-Packard Carly Fiorina, was caught on an open mic putting down the not-so-stylish hair of Democratic incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer. "God? What is that hair," Fiorina asked with the sarcastic shock I've heard chic women (and more than a few men, particularly the ones nestled in the Conde Nast tower) from New York to Europe use against the fashion-challenged. "It's so yesterday," Fiorina added, lingering on the "so" for full dramatic effect.

The clip starts with Fiorina questioning California Republican gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman's decision to go on Sean Hannity's Fox News program as her first interview since winning the primary. "Sean Hannity is not an easy interview," Fiorina said.

This is not the first time Fiorina has put her speak-from-the-heart, devil-may-care attitude on display. We saw it when she was a 2008 presidential campaign surrogate for Sen. John McCain. That's when she famously said, "Well, I don't think John McCain could run a major corporation," when she was asked to explain her comment during a radio interview that vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin didn't have the experience to run a major corporation.

Fiorina is not alone in her gaffe. Remember the whopper Rev. Jesse Jackson let loose on a Fox News program during the 2008 presidential election? He was mad about how then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was "talking down to black people" and how he wanted to, um, emasculate the future president.

What makes these open-mic episodes so funny is that it proves once again that no matter how often people do television they never remember that the moment they walk into a studio they are "on." And once they are hooked up to the mic, the world is watching and listening -- or soon will be. Take it from me. I know of what I speak.

The posted clip ends before she finishes her comments about Sen. Boxer's hair; it's shorter than what's been on TV this morning. To me, it was not what she said but how she said it -- her delivery is kind of creepy.

I love these caught on the mic stories, and I wish more politicians would cut the BS and just speak normally!

No one in America cares.

Fiorina's off-camera comments are about 1,000,000,000 times less embarrassing than Barbara Boxer's on-camera, on-the-record comments.

The number of comments bepeaks the inanity of your article.

Call me a time machine but Carly's hair looks seriously more whack than anything i see on Ms. Boxer's head.

It should be obvious. Women are their own worst enemies. If women can't deal with each other without being obsessed with looks, who can expect men to?

Don't worry, righties, you won't have to read many more stories about Carly, since she will get crushed in November. So move along.

Does Carly go to the same blind barber as Rand Paul? AWFUL!

Butch Carly is the one who'll be "so yesterday" after the election... What a shallow fool she is!

Carly Fiorina is getting nowhere in California with her North Carolina-style politics of destruction.

Another poster said Fiorina's hair is "barely there" because Fiorina has cancer and has been getting chemotherapy.

Can anyone out there confirm that Carly Fiorina has cancer and is receiving chemotherapy?

If that's true, then it would seem even worse that Fiorina would criticize anykind of hair because she should know first-hand what it's like to be without any hair at all.

Actually, I believe Fiorina is just a "butch" -- I haven't seen any news stories that Fiorina has cancer and gets chemotherapy treatments which is why Fiorina was recently so bald.

Carly Failure-ina, she of the "let's spy on the HP board of directors", now wants to make comparisons to her opponent's hair?

How about a more relevant comparison? How do you stack up, Failure-ina, on social intelligence? Answer: With a ZERO! Time to go back to your catty "I'm better than you and my s?it doesn't stink." clique and soak your head.

MEOW!
The right-wing, no-brain Repos left the country in disarray, and the only thing that occurs to this stupid woman is to comment on senator Boxer's hairdo.
No wonder she was fired from Hewlett Packard....for stupid!
And this witless character pretend to represent us in Washington? She must have been picked by Trash Limbaugh and Bill O'Dummy.

This is a "news" story? Politics has become often incredibly trivial, as "covered" by the media.

That’s pretty funny considering CA has a 50 billion dollar budget short fall to contend with. It would appear the DEMS in power now have done a fine job. But feel free to place your bet on Botcher……..

Posted by: askgees | June 10, 2010 2:00 PM | Report abuse

No, Fiorina didn't spy on the HP board. The board's chair, Patricia Dunn, did that.

Fiorina merely ran HP into a ditch.

Why are her comments controversial? Barbara Boxer's hair is ugly? As a matter of fact, Boxer is an ugly old shrew (in the Democratic party's tradition of electing ugly shrew women to office).

To all the authors of "this is news? aren't there more important things happening" comments: the Post, like all major news outlets these days, devotes some of its resources to the "lighter side" of news. Presumably this is because they know that many people, such as yourself, for example, will read and enjoy them (and actually take time to comment!). You are quite free not to.

I hope Fiorina not only "pulls Boxers hair" but also knocks the hell out of her during the election.

You would think that someone who just had a brush with a life-threatening illness and lost her hair to chemotherapy would have more humility. But for the gaffe-hungry press, “The general election campaign battle in California for U.S. Senate is barely two days old, and it's already gettin' good.”

The fact is not 12 hours had elapsed before the cat fight began. Why would we elect someone who has never been flight-tested, whose only experience is running a corporation, and whose first act out of the box is to take a cheap shot against her opponent and criticize her fellow Republican's tactics? She did the same thing to McCain.

If this is her “speak-from-the-heart, devil-may-care attitude,” she should take her considerable resources and look for another job.

What I love about you East Coast Elitists is that you have no idea what's actually going on in the West - where most of our nation's GDP comes from.

Let me be explicit - we have mail-in elections, there will be Legalize Marijuana initiatives and propositions on every state's ballot in the General election, as well as either a new Income Tax on the Rich or an increase in the Income Tax on the Rich.

This will turn out so many Democratic voters that the Republicans won't know what hit them.

Wave bye-bye to your predictions, cause none of your landline-phoning of old people will matter when everyone can vote in the General election using a stamp.

And we all know who got us into this mess - Republicans and CEOs - Fiorina can't stop that landslide.

You have to understand leftists. They are all about the lie. Truth is unimportant. What matters is whatever lie or half-lie they can manipulate so that it seems like the truth.

For example, the key to understanding our silly little leftist lindalovejones is the phrase "has cancer and gets chemotherapy treatments". What this dissembling means is that unless Carly Fiorina received chemotherapy TODAY, she doesn't have cancer. It is immaterial that Ms. Fiorina had cancer last year, or that she received chemo and had surgery, or that the cancer may come back. All that matters is that she doesn't have it RIGHT NOW, which in lindalovejones twisted world means that Ms. Fiorina does not deserve our sympathy and therefore leftists can feel free to viciously smear her.

Of course, if Barbara Boxer had had breast cancer, lindalovejones and her ilk would be attacking Boxer's critics for being unsympathetic to a courageous cancer survivor. Leftist politics 101.

Well, actually most of my political opinions would be identified as left. It's just sloppy, unsubstantiated statements I find annoying. Like your statement, "You have to understand leftists. They are all about the lie." Offering hyperbole as if it's truth is just as disingenuous as offering an assumption.

" . . . Ms. Fiorina had cancer last year (my edit here: incidentally, if she "had" it last year she still technically has it), or that she received chemo and had surgery, or that the cancer may come back."

Absolutely immaterial. I too had cancer last year (still do), received chemo, had surgery, etc.

The point is not that Fiorina does not have the right to criticize Boxer's hair--she certainly does.

The more relevant point is that Fiorina's hair, cancer notwithstanding, is more "yesterday" than Boxer's. I'm assuming that (since Fiorina commented on Boxer's hair) she feels hers looks better. Serious delusion.

Of course none of this is "news." None of us who read this piece and have commented can pretend otherwise.

Wow-nice work left-o-crats. You get sooo riled at someone like Carly making an offhand (and silly) comment on someone's hair. The term double standard doesn't even come close to describing these comments. I forget when I wander over to read an article in the Post just how narrow minded and full of hate and vitriol you are-then I realize my right leaning compatriates do exactly the same thing!!

What a country we live in! We can all type out mean and hateful rhetoric against the people we dislike for no other reason than that we don't agree with them, when the reality is we actually should be working. Oh, me too...

Sorry but I will never vote for her because even though she got people to work she also fired a lot of people and was fired herself....(Nor will I vote for Whitman.....she is a billionaire and spent 80 million on her campaign what does she know about having to balance a budget...so she will just enlist state workers to do that for her and anyone can do that).......BUT FIORINA'S HAIR STYLE IS BECAUSE SHE SUPPOSEDLY HAS CANCER AND THE HAIR WAS LOST IN TREATMENT.....that is what I heard on the news.......is it true? Does anyone know.....guess i will try looking it up....A CA Registered Voter
