The 'Mama Grizzlies' video and Palin platitudes

I just got a chance to look at the latest Sarah Palin video, “Mama Grizzlies,” and I have to say it is vintage Palin: relentlessly, insultingly unsubstantial. It is one minute and 48 seconds of recycled Palin platitudes.

"This year will be remembered as the year when common-sense conservative women get things done for our country," Palin says. "All across this country, women are standing up and speaking out for common-sense solutions." Uh, such as?

“These policies coming out of D.C. right now, this fundamental transformation of America, well, a lot of women who are very concerned about their kids’ futures are saying we don’t like this fundamental transformation and we’re going to do something about it.” Palin never tells us what fundamental transformation she is talking about, although there are a few hints on the video: women holding posters with sayings such as “No government-run health care” and “Moms against mandates.”

Mostly, though, it’s Palin and the gals -- and this is the insulting part, in which the former Alaska governor purports to speak for her gender. "It seems like it's kind of a mom awakening in the last year and a half, where women are rising up and saying, 'No, we've had enough already,'" she says. "Because moms kinda just know when something's wrong. Here in Alaska, I always think of the mama grizzly bears that rise up on their hind legs when somebody's coming to attack their cubs, to do something adverse toward their cubs.”

Well, I’m a mom. Maybe even a Mama Grizzly -- although I have no idea who or what Palin thinks is trying to do something adverse to my cubs. But I kinda just know when someone’s serious, and when someone’s just spouting off. I keep waiting for Palin to stop doing the latter.

Palin is a fascinating topic.

We get it Ms. Marcus. She doesn't speak for you. Glad you cleared that up since I've never heard that until now.

This is marketing, branding. The people who like her will be impressed. It's that basic. And it definitely gets her out in the atmoshpere once again.

There's a lot to read about Sarah Palin out there. I can fully appreciate that religious conservatives like her a lot. What I don't get is the addictive compulsion of her detractors to take yet another hit. Who can explain the fascination?

"Because moms just know when something's wrong." You mean like when someone tells us that there are death panels when there aren't any?

Although nothing Sarah does makes any sense to the informed, thinking people who make up the majority of this country, we know she's extremely effective at promoting herself to that 20% of the population who hang on to her every word, however vapid and uniformed it may be.

It always mystified me that some 20% of the population thought George W. Bush was doing a good job even at the end of his term. I suspect there's significant overlap between that 20% and the pit bull's fans ...

I would love to see her win the Presidency. This country is an addict: addicted to drugs, addicted to cheap money, addicted to oil, addicted to war. And all addicts need to hit ROCK BOTTOM before they turn things around. Palin would definitely lead this country down to that level, destroying the GOP party brand forever, and leading to a re-awakening that could make this country great again. Sure, she could be a female version of Hitler, but you can't make an omlet without breaking a few eggs.

Palin in 2012!

That’s because you weren’t listening.

12% of American Voters like Sarah “The Bimbo” Palin.

88% of American Voters don’t believe Palin is qualified to hold office.

If you would have listened any time between now and 18 months ago, you WOULD have heard that.

May be, but thankfully there are no enough people addicted to stupidity to Palin a seat in any office. Do you have to be reminded again, the last time they gave Palin an office she walked out, quit.

What makes you think The Bimbo wants to be in politics? She’s a celebrity now, making more money than she’s ever made before, and no audits and not required to tell the truth either.

I think Palin is happy right where she is now.

Palin is getting some attention now on her position on domestic oil extraction with the climate bill before the Senate, especially her “Drill, baby, drill!” motto. Check it out: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hal-donahue/the-choice-drill-baby-dri_b_638683.html . This will definitely tarnish her reputation, that is if other events, debates haven’t already. Let’s be honest, her response to the oil spill was shortsighted. The way Palin has framed this whole thing has been remarkably insulting to the residents of the Gulf coast. She is clearly one of the most polarizing figures in politics these days. Is it very "Mama Grizzly"-like to consign our children to a future of environmental degradation, war, and poverty?

Palin and substance do not mix. Vapidity is her metier. She lacks the intellect to speak about any specifics since she is too ignorant and lacks the basics. Someone could write something for her but that would injure her vanity. Keep it ephemeral must become her motto. (Assuming she knows what ephemeral means.)

Posted by: palnicki | July 9, 2010 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Marcus is just another hater to come out of left field. Sarah rocks...and she gets so much attention from the left because she's their biggest threat. I love it. Go Sarah! Keep those liberals fidgeting in their seats. LOL

Posted by: ebenz1966 | July 9, 2010 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Sarah Palin is smart enough to know that she doesn't have to be proposing a specific platform now for an election that is more than two years away. A platform needs to fit the time and circumstances in place when the election occurs, not two years before. Guessing about that now would just give people ammunition to use later.

If more people were hunters like Ms. Palin, they would know that there's no sense shooting game at long distance, if the herd is heading in your direction. Patience is a hunting virtue. Ms. Palin is a lot smarter than those who say she needs to be putting out specific programs now.

All Ms. Palin has to do now is:

Build alliances within different sectors of the Republican base.

Listen to the pulse of the country - listening being another hunting virtue.

Stay center stage so that other candidates don't perceive a vacuum.

Finally, Ms. Palin was the most financially insecure candidate to run for national office in my lifetime. She needs to earn money to finance her family's needs before an election campaign begins. She doesn't have the luxury of a personal fortune or a high earning spouse.

Ms. Palin appears to be doing an admirable job of all four tasks.

Posted by: jfv123 | July 9, 2010 5:57 PM | Report abuse

The dislike for her is easy to explain, she started her national career by mocking her rivals, so naturally people thought "Ok, so who are you and what do you stand for?" She brags about her accomplishments that when given a closer inspection prove to be false. So far she has been unable to articulate her positions, just bumper sticker slogans. She seems to be unable to give a speech without singling out someone and publicly mocking them, she ducks the press-won't take any unscripted questions and I have yet to hear her talk at length on any national policies.

A little bit of humility would go a long way for her.

I'm a Mom who wants Sarah Palin, the hypocrite, to SHUT UP AND GO AWAY!!!!!

Sarah Palin is a hypocrite, an insult to all intelligent people, and a danger to less than intelligent people.

It's telling that Palinites don't think Palin needs to:

1. LEARN a thing or two about responsible governing and policy.

2. Build a reputation as a serious candidate by making statements and expressing opinions that demonstrate some understanding of the issues and complexities facing the nation.

But of course the assorted Teabaggers and Palin hangers-on don't think any of that is necessary to be President of the United States. They were willing to accept her as Vice President two years ago!

Moms know when something's wrong. Enough is enough. Fundamental transformation of America.

It all equals: I don't know anything about politics, I know nothing about policy and I have no idea how to make things better, but things are tough for me financially and I have a vague idea that its President Obama's fault because that's what I hear every time I pass the TV while my husband is watching Fox News. Palin is taking advantage of political opinion by osmosis. Actual policy positions would just confuse her target audience.

There is no limit to the love that Sarah Palin and her paid staff have for Sarah Palin. First she calls herself a barracuda, then a pit bull and now a grizzly-- all animals that are vicious and cannot be trusted. This is just more propaganda--not because she has intentions to run for higher office, but because she is afraid the gravy train is running out of steam. Look at the comments made by Levi--not the wording of a 19 year old but his comments were clearly written up by Sarah's staff, a bribe so that he can spend time with his son and sleep with Sarah's daughter again. The only original solution this celebrity wannabee has come up with so far is to hire a little Dutch boy to plug the oil leak. Before the leak, it was drill baby drill and look at my husband, Toad, who has worked for the great BP firm for 18 years. Now the Barracuda is knifing them in the back for firing her husband once they no longer needed her political favors.

Instead of comparing herself to grizzlies (who DON"T protect their cubs by going up on their hind legs like Palin says)why don't we all just agree that the correct animal metaphor for her should be snake.

We know that Sarah Palin has nothing important to say, yet the media continues to report every incomprehensible tweet, report (from afar) on her every utterance delivered in a speech-like venue.

More puzzling is that the media would not prop up this "political BS" (to paraphrase Peggy Noonan) if it were being done by a less physically attractive woman, by a man, or by any non-Caucasian.

Seriously, if Tim Pawlenty up and quit his job as governor, so he could take up full time tweeting, refuse all interviews and media except for a guest spot on Fox, post platitude- and cliché-filled riddles on his FaceBook wall, attacked anyone and everyone for manufactured slights against him or his family, and delivered 2 minute "campaign" ads for "Papa Rutting Elks" who are going to stampede Washington and take their "territory back by marking it with the 'water' of patriots," you and the rest of the media would eviscerate him.

Not so with Palin. The media coddles and encourages her because they need her storyline as distraction from real reporting. Instead, they'd rather chase Palin, handicap the horse races and read mystical "tea leaves" otherwise known as polls.

It's well past time for the media to rip Palin "a new one," and then cast her aside trash heap of blithering political idiots, bigots and outright fools.

We should have no time and no patience for a moronic charlatan.

I'd suggest you lighten up Ms Marcus. Gov. Palin is speaking to her constituency, just as you write to hers.

If you don't like her don't read her or listen to her. Some people may not care for your points of view either, but you have a right to express them. That's what she is doing, expressing her viewpoints to people who like what she has to say.

What would Ruth Marcus do with Sarah Palin? She has to be the #1 OpEd writer (and I use the title "OpEd Writer" extremely loosely) on the topic of Sarah Palin. The one-trick pony is back!!

BTW, why comment on a video that 99% of America didn't even know existed? It's like you're trying to drum a controversy out of nothing. If you really, really dislike her, why not just ignore her? Now, I'm going to go to YouTube to see if I can find the video. I almost forgot Palin existed and you brought her back into the public discourse for a 2 minute video that virtually says nothing. It's like you can't help yourself. You've got to be OCD.

I mean this is so unimportant that Huff will have a headline for months. She is so unsubstantial that I will now consider how so relates to me and my children.

Here's a hot tip, you may feel free to use it with your children and pets as well- if someone is annoying you, you ignore them, and they will go away. If you give them a headline in the Washington Post, they win.

Look, Sarah Palin is never going to run for president - she's dumb, but not stupid - she is never again going to put herself in a situation such as a debate with the other side; she doesn't seem interested in educating herself about the complicated issues, and that doesn't bode well for her in debates - she just gives generalized hate filled talk to fire up her worshipers. She makes too much money now going around giving bones to the pack to give that up for a run at something she knows she is not qualified to be only to lose--

I wasn't aware that mama grizzlies were known to quit when challenged. That's palins track record. The half term governor has a stronger record of quitting than accomplishments.

All the folksy phony platitudes and bumpersticker kitch are all so shallow. There's no substance - just like palin herself. Sorry sister, bumpersticker slogans don't solve problems, it's all just fluff.

Obama's modus operandi:

I agree with jade7423 that we should not give her attention, but if we don't hi-lite her foolish political vision, she could get fed some sensible information to spout from her entourage - then she'd really be dangerous - a manikin for the right. Wait, she is that now! Scary. Not to change the subject, but I would like to see her get a real pair of glasses - the kind with frames that don't break if you are a hunter or a rancher, the kind a baby can't knock off on the floor. I believe all her hunting-fishing-skinning is also hype. Where are her good old worn hunting clothes when she appears on TV? I live on a farm and I don't have a lot of clothing that looks that good because you just wreck your clothes working around animals. Just sayin.

Why are you so PARANOID of Sarah Palin, Ms. Marcus? She is simply a Conservative Christian who possesses the values of most Americans; what used to be called "The Silent Majority". These AREN'T a group of radicals, but regular everyday Americans who remember how GREAT America was BEFORE this Socialist COUP took place to try to overthrow our Democratic Republic created by our Founding Fathers.

Our Founders escaped from Europe to create a land DIFFERENT from those European Theocracies their Monarches had created. They wanted a FREE land where they could worship God as they pleased, own their own property, own and keep possession of their weapons to protect themselves and their families (just in case a dangerous leader arose to power who tried to overthrow the Democratic Republic they established)! They made in clear in all their founding documents they based our US Government on God's Holy Bible! In fact, President George Washington ordered the Bible be used as a textbook in all our Nation's classrooms! For those who doubt these things, go to www.WallBuilders.com and read for yourself the documents and the personal and business letters of our Founding Fathers! Notice how often they mention God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit, a/k/a the Trinity, in their documents, writings, and speeches!

Until the Socialists got their Socialist President elected to the White House (by mostly financial contributions which came from extremist groups like MoveOn.org, the Black Panther Party (I saw the ad with my own eyes on Obama's website, seeking financial contributions from them), and the Communist ACLU, the NEA, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, all the Lesbian and Homosexual groups, clandestine mafia groups, multi-racial illegal alien groups, etc. The $15+ million Obama raised in financial contributions is the largest of any Presidential Campaign in US History and included under-the table financial contributions from member Nations of the EU's/UN's One World Government and from Governments that our enemies of the US, including Islamic organizations.

Socialists were working from behind the scenes--for decades--from within their elected political positions of authority within our US Government BEFORE this Coup took place with Obama's Presidency: their political goal has been to overthrow our Democratic Republic and replace it with a Socialist government compatible with the European Union's One World Government and everything that has happened thus far has proven this! Czar is a term created by the Socialist/Communist leaders of Russia; not America, yet Obama himself appointed (without any the votes from the Senate or Congress) numerous "Czars" to carry out his political agenda at the detriment of our US Citizens.

Sarah is merely making it clear that most of America will not continue to stand for a Government without representation!

May God BLESS and PROTECT Sarah Palin and all those who want freedom RETURNED!

P.S. To my Comments: WHO is paying BACK those 15+ MILLION $ Obama raised for his political campaign and all those loans he accumulated while he and his family zig-zagged back and forth across America and to foreign Nations? I suspect it is the US Taxpayers and their children who are (or will be) paying back Obama's debts, along with all the National Debts he has run up since the election.

Being for nothing, against everything with prejudice playing slogans hardworking patriotic Americans following the Constitution, not taking away our freedoms fools people like you. Are you against illegals or for them like Rubio? For a useless Polish missile defense, a strong military or a head in the sand ostrich like Paul? Against health care administrator cuts while embracing draconian cuts by Angle, Rubio, Paul? Against the stimulus which had over 250 billion in tax cuts but for tax cuts? How that drill baby drill everywhere including offshore working out? Are you a birther, Obama is a muslim believer? Who knew 20% of the American electorate could be so clueless?

Shame, shame, shame and shame once again on all women who do not support Governor Palin. This is YOUR chance, women, to take the Presidency in 2012 because the man in now will NEVER EVER get a second term. He continues to ruin our country. Jimmy Carter, all agree, was a terrible President, but he will look like Abraham Lincoln compared to Obama. OMG. Women, get you heads on straight and stop fearing Palin because of her great intelligence, beauty, charisma and willingness to speak out truthfully. Get behind this woman. OR would you rather have that Plastic Pelosi in the WH? God forbid. Women, please stop being so JEALOUS and get behind the Governor. She will make you proud of who you are and will be a boost to the USA. God bless America and God bless Governor Palin. ONce we can remove the Jealousy factor, the Governor will indeed be President-Elect Palin. And as for Obama, it will be: Obama who????

fundamental transformation? Aw, how quickly we forget....Candidate Obama's "we are days away from fundamentally transforming this great nation".

And if Palin doesn't speak for you...she certainly does for a lot of her "gender"....and obviously, that frightens you. Conservative women are to be seen and not heard....they can't be feminists because they are pro life.....isn't that the mantra?

Conservative women are doing fairly well in the primaries aren't they? And that fundamentally scares a whole lot of folks...

For a long time i could not fathom why liberals express so much hatred for Sarah Palin. Although there are a fair number of liberal males out there who think little of her, most of the vitriol comes from the ladies. Jealousy, perhaps?

Well, she is smart, articulate, good looking, conservative, christian, and she doesn't back down from a fight. She has put up with a few years of the liberals in the media trashing her character, her intelligence, her background, her communication skills, and her family, yet she is still in there fighting the Obama Cartel and all of the loony liberals out there.

She is courageous and is willing to stand on her principles. She doesn't back down. And worst of all, as far as libs are concerned, she is a White Female.

So, Ruth, how does she make you feel?

Lindalovejones, how little do you feel knowing that Sarah Palin is so much more consequential than you will ever be?

Libs, when will you realize you are overmatched by the Every Woman from Wasilla?

Regarding: "Stay center stage so that other candidates don't perceive a vacuum."
Other candidates--including most Republicans, who are far more afraid of Ms. Palin than are Democrats--do perceive a vacuum: it's between Ms. Palin's ears.

Platitudes are ENOUGH TO SWAY that simplistic 25% or so who bought into the bullbleep of even "King" Georgie and his Crackpot Cabal of NeoConMen --- who have GIVEN "us" "our" PERPETUAL WAR, "our" ADDICTION TO OTHER PEOPLES' OIL, and "our" TECHNOLOGICAL IGNORANCE of and the SUPPRESSION (or at least very substantial ARTIFICIAL DELAY of) TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES that COULD and SHOULD have CURED "us" now LONG AGO ALREADY of "our" various abject dependencies that keep "us" all endlessly enthralled (to THEIR "advantage", NOT "ours"!). And elections tend to be decided by VERY THIN MARGINS!

“HONEST INJUN”, people – “WE” REALLY DO NOW KNOW (and HAVE KNOWN FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW ALREADY!) how to build automobiles that would simply FLAT-OUT ELIMINATE a HUGE proportion of “our” addictive dependency on oil!! Indeed, the development engineering of ONE prototype adaptation of the concept to the (mere) automobile HAS BEEN “IN THE CAN” ---at GM, in the persona of the Chevy VOLT(!) --- FOR NEARLY A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW ALREADY! But nothing much seems to be being done to even so much as merely INFORM the general public at all accurately about the basic concept!

The “new” (actually quite OLD!) “Chimera” Automotive Architectural concept EVEN IN IT’S PROTOTYPICAL INFANCY --- i.e. BEFORE “layering in” REGENERATIVE BRAKING, which could even about FURTHER DOUBLE the INNATE fuel efficiency and vehicle range figures --- ACHIEVES AN EPA MILEAGE RATING OF 230(!) MILES PER GALLON OF GASOLINE!!

Moreover, the design SIMPLY ELIMINATES THE COMPLEX, EXPENSIVE, TROUBLESOME TRANSMISSION AND DRIVE TRAIN(!) --- so it could ultimately be PRODUCED CHEAPLY, once the BATTERY technology is “ramped up”!

So WHY, do you suppose, is it that “We the (Small) People” ARE NOT EVEN NOW hearing much about this marvelous “new” (actually quite OLD!) technological “advance”??!
I suggest the real reason is TO DODGE BLAME! Given the FAILURE of “our” “political” (MIS)”leadership” (of EITHER “political stripe”!) --- and more broadly the at-best-MISguided (and maybe in many cases more like MISBEGOTTEN!) GENERALIZED MIS”leadership” OF THE SOCIETY AS A WHOLE: the dispersed and diffuse COLLECTIVE TOTALITY of many “corporate” CEOs and CFOs and managerial miscreants OF ALL SORTS, in MANY “institutional” structures within “our” whole politico-economic (DIS)order! --- to ACTUALLY ACT on what has NOW LONG been known --- well, IT NOW AIN’T GONNA BE AT ALL EASY!

Indeed, as a consequence of “our” having DELAYED WAY TOO LONG, the whole process WILL NOW BE WAY MORE PAINFUL THAN IT WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO BE(!) --- and indeed HAS ALREADY BEEN, given all the grief and misery engendered by “us” as a consequence of “our” ADDICTIVE DEPENDENCY ON OTHER PEOPLES’ OIL RESOURCES (in places like “Iraq” ---and now bumbling on still further, Afghanistan and Pakistan!).

If Sarah and company would actually, seriously EDUCATE people about such REALITIES --- then they might actually come to be WORTHY of "high" office!

What is it about Palin that drives the left crazy? They are obsessed with her and just can't stop bashing her. She has really hit a nerve and gotten under their skins. I guess a smart, engaging, and yes attractive woman who is on the right is more than they can bear.

Geez, Ruth, empty platitudes and no substance (and I wholeheartedly agree - there was nothing of real substance in her latest offering)..... how could somebody like that draw such a rabid following - obviously a group of easily led kool-aid guzzlers who are high on exciting rhetoric and lofty goals, and just hope the substance will come later. Sound like anyone you might have voted for about 20 months ago, Ruth? Perhaps if all of you had given the same unstinting scrutiny to your hero you've given to Palin and her entire family since her name was announced, we might not have bought this pig in a poke, hmmmm?

'I kinda just know when someone’s serious, and when someone’s just spouting off." So do I, and I certainly hope you quit spouting off. Why don't you check yourself into a treatment center some place for some Electro Convulsive Therapy, I hear it works wonders for Palin Derangement Disorder.

Palin is a lot like the woman who just won the Republican nomination for government of South Carolina. Not as well-schooled and not from a rich family as Haley is, but she has the same intensity and willingness to take the"good ole boys on." Not a bit like Lisa Murkowski, a typical liberal Republican woman, whose Daddy handed her a senate seat and is madly tacking to the center and trying to prove herself the anti-Palin.

I still think that If Palin runs for the Republican nomination she would be the front runner and she could well win this against Obama.
America is growing seriously tired of the Obama administration. If Palin wins the nomination (and I think she will) she has great chances to become POTUS.

Insubstantial . . . true . . . unlike those Obama posts featuring large groups of such well-known and substantial folks such as college students and Hollywood denizens chanting 'Yes, we can!' . . . Column idea: we have a lot of 'ad hominem' politics in the following manner: many people who are into 'media' select their politics strictly on the basis of the classes of people opposing vs. supporting this or that issue. Kind of like choosing your beer based on celebrity endorsements. Palin represents a class of people who inspire a curious degree of hatred and fear on the part of the urban affluet - a category which includes the proprietors of most of the big media, unfortunately. It's not about Palin. It's about this class.

Well, Ms. Marcus. If you don't see the "fundamental transformations" that the socialist Dems are trying to put us through, then you have no business calling yourself a professional journalist. I get that you don't like Sarah Palin, probably for the same reasons that Kathleen Parker doesn't like her: Sarah Palin is strong, successful and is doesn't take crap from anybody.

That fact that our children, grand-children and great-grand-children will be left with paying for the mess that leftists like yourself have created and/or cheered on is more than enough for the "Mama Grizzlies" to stand up. Where were you when all of this was happening?

You are not a Mama Grizzly by any stretch. You are a submissive puppy ready to give unconditional support to the socialists in power no matter how damaging their policies are to this nation and to our future generations. And as such, women like Sarah Palin scare you.

You have my pity.

Always funny watching the leftwingers' spittle fly as they wax apoplectic about Sarah. The thing I love best about Sarah is how she shows the left's utter hypocrisy about so many things - such as their fixation on what she wears, whether she had a boob job, sex, etc. And, in this case, Ruth complaining that her video 2 years before an election lacked specifics - while that very same Ruth loved Obama, who used 10,000,000 words to say pretty much nothing during his campaign. And the only things Obama WAS specific about have turned out to be lies.

Posted by: ksm12009 | July 14, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Common sense is the ingredient that is missing in today's leadership, so people like to say and hear Sarah say. Common sense is the result of common experience and mostly, on examination, is so uncommon as to be, in reality, a myth. It implies that lower class working people think alike on fundamental principles in a way that, if they ever ran things, there would be a unified approach to problems with such unequaled and unqualified wisdom that everything that we all think is wrong now, would just go away.

Fantasy!!

She does well, our Sarah does. She can irritate and inspire. She can lull us into forgetfulness - she's a quitter not just as governor but in the many many colleges she attended - and rouse us to protect our young. The perfect brand for all that ails us. America, you're being made. But then again, we are a nation of forgetters and simple thinkers. Except the sexy parts because our attention spans are less than a few minutes. And we look for simple remedies in a world used to looking deeper. Go abroad and experience the world and see the seriousness of China and the Middle East. I have. She hits the right notes for this country. So many ready to hum along to her song - because they can't remember the lyrics.
