Ben Quayle owes someone an apology

Speaking on behalf of William Henry Harrison, I am deeply, deeply offended by Ben Quayle’s ad that called Barack Obama the Worst. President. In. History.

Doesn’t he know how hard other people worked to earn that title?

William Henry Harrison holds only two records: longest inaugural speech (8445 words) and shortest presidency. In the time that it took him to deliver his speech, you could have delivered the Gettysburg Address more than 100 times. His speech was of comparable length to the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with director’s commentary. That’s a long time for anything that doesn’t involve orcs.

A month later, he died of pneumonia. Some say this was the result of prolonged exposure to weather while delivering his inaugural address, but I think it was because of his overwhelming commitment to one goal, and one goal only: to be the worst president the United States has ever had. Other presidents at least spent time in office, doing things like establishing precedent, invading Mexico, or recording themselves talking at length about breaking into the Watergate. And, say what you will about Richard Nixon's presidency, he kept the media employed.

But even if you aren’t willing to recognize William Henry Harrison’s commitment to being the worst president in history, there are others to choose from! Look at Benjamin Harrison! He didn't accomplish much, and people said shaking his hand was like manhandling a wilted petunia. If you’re just going by handshakes, Calvin Coolidge was said to have a handshake like a dead fish wrapped in newspaper. And he doesn't seem to have done much for the economy. And what about Warren G. Harding? Former Treasury Secretary William McAdoo said that "His speeches left the impression of pompous phrases moving over the landscape in search of an idea. Sometimes these meandering words would actually capture a straggling thought and bear it triumphantly, a prisoner in their midst, until it died of servitude and overwork." That sounds awful!

Now Ben Quayle just comes along and disregards both Harrisons, Coolidge, and Franklin Pierce (don’t get me started on Franklin Pierce) in favor of Barack Obama? Say what you will about Barack Obama, he’s certainly been doing his best not to be the worst president in history, doing things like appearing on the View and gently encouraging people to think about health care. He’s certainly no William Henry Harrison. He’s not even a James K. Polk!

I think Ben Quayle owes someone an apology.

Ben Quayle owes people in Arizona who happened to catch his ridiculous ad an apology. Besides telling them that Obama is the worst president in history, somehow responsible for Mexican drug cartels, he also says someone (presumably him) ought to go to Washington and knock the "hell out of the place." Idiocy must run in that family.

Obviously you do not live in Arizona. Obama is doing all he can to suppor the Mexican Drug cartels. Just look at his stance against comprehensive immigration reform. And yes, someone DOES need to knock the hell out of that place. Hopefully knocking out all of the Democrats. They have done NOTHING to in the last two years to help our country. Even by Obama's own estute analysis of the economy and unemployment, we would have been better off if we did nothing at all! But now we are $800+ billion in the hole! Thanks Democrats, brilliant, stupid retards.

And now let go the author's quote of Obama "encouraging people to think about health care". Yeah, he is gently encouraging them to pay a tax or go to jail if they dont pay it! That must be chicago style of gentle politics!

Liberals are so stupid, I just dont know where to start! Just please go away and leave running the coutry to the adults!

I am tired of hearing all liberals claim that Republican haven't offered anything. We ALL know that just isn't true. The problemy you have is that you need to claim that so you can only talk about the ineffective policies that have been put in place by this administration. Democrats have had their chance to change things, and have failed.

You want some statistics. Look at the unemployment rate during the Bush years. It went from 6.3% down to 5.4%. And under Obama the unemployment rate has gone up from 6.5% to 9.6%. THAT is Democratic policies at work!

http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=usunemployment&met=unemployment_rate&tdim=true&dl=en&hl=en&q=unemployment+rate

And even by Obama's own analysis, unemployment wouldn't have gotten any higher than 9% if we did nothing. Yet, thanks to his economic policies we are now in worse shape than if we did nothing at all, and wouldn't have had to borrow $800+billion!

Dan Quayle (aka "the inexplicable choice for VP") was at least amusing in his thick-headedness and was otherwise inoffensive. His son appears to have borrowed the mantle of ignorance from his father, but with a streak of mean. Thankfully, to be truly cutting, wit is a prerequisite -- so little risk of any meaningful attacks from young Ben.

By the way, the title of "Worst President in US History" goes -- hands down -- to George W Bush. All other candidates are a very distant second.

I hope he defines what 'knock the hell out of the place' means. Is it to just say no to every piece of legislation? Have atemper tantrum on the Senate floor? Hold a hearing? Place a hold on a nomination? Stamp his foot? I hope people are not stupid enough to believe that this son of a failure is part of any solution to this country's problems - he's just a symptom of our malaise.

Ben Quayle grew up in Scottsdale, a child of significant priviledge, so one can excuse his being somewhat out of touch. And he's running for office in a state that increasingly looks like Hooterville.

This year, my beloved Arizona leads the nation in stupid ideas, for the first time ever eclipsing former stupidity leaders Texas and Florida. So one can probably understand what it might take to stand out among the village of idiots.

He's managed to do it.

Don't be too harsh on young Quayle. He is probably too young to remember his father as VP, and he probably isn't intelligent enough to remember George W. Bush's eight years of cosmic destruction of the US. But I'll bet daddy taught him to spell "tomato" or was it "potato"? I too have bouts of amnesia.

Technically, I think it would have been more appropriate if he had referred to Obama as a "miserable failure," echoing remarks Dem Congresspersons made about George Bush.

Why would Quayle owe anyone an apology? The Dumbs have had the Congress for 4 years and the Presidency for 2 and they keep driving the Country further and further in debt.

Furthermore, for you lib idiots who like to compare Ben to his father, you might want to do a little studying. Dan Quayle was prolific in the siding with the right people in foreign politics; i.e. Yeltsin over Gorby. He was far better than people give him credit for and I can pretty much guarantee that we would not be in this economic position if he were running the country.

Oh Yea, I forgot, Ben does owe an apology for liking women, just like 99% of every other men!

OBAMA DEFINITELY THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER!!!

COOLCHILLY need to take HIS/HER blinders off: the problems that President Obama is working to correct BEGAN UNDER THE PRIOR ADMINISTRATION, which didn't know a spending bill it couldn't pass, which didn't require a funding source for those bills and therefore passed along hugely expensive unfunded mandates to the states, which didn't account for the cost of the Iraq and Afghan wars in ANY of its budgets, instead getting the funding through "supplemental expenditures" (which Obama corrected in his first budget, resulting in one of the two biggest reasons for the supposed "Obama" deficit -- the other is Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy, which also weren't paid for -- and the Bush-Obama financial rescue/stimulus is a far smaller portion of that deficit -- look it up -- you don't have to believe me), and which had no IDEA how to deal with a rapidly downward spiraling economy -- which if you have ANY memory at all, began in 2007 (and I remember the date clearly, because it was that August when my husband was laid off in the first wave of the financial meltdown).

You seem as ignorant and ready to point fingers of blame everywhere but the source as is the brainless Ben Quayle.

As for him: why should we even CARE what that intellectual do-nothing lightweight, with his phony family values stance (and his record of writing smutty web copy), trying to capitalize on his Daddy's name, even says? The dumb son seems not to have fallen far from the potatoe tree. (And yes, I spelled that wrong on purpose -- in honor of Papa Dan's utter brilliance...)

I can understand some of the Presidents listed, you can surely add a few (Buchanan, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson), but why hate on Polk? The Mexican War was not just an "invasion." History can be a tricky thing when current conditions temper a person's analysis of those past events. Beyond the Mexican War, Polk also negotiated a successful acquisition of the Oregon Territory and balanced the federal budget.

Don't you think it's amazing that the most rabid anti-Obama politicians come from states where black folk are as rare as hen's teeth, or say walruses in Louisiana?
Quayle and McCain and Gov. Brewer all come from Arizona with a population consisting of .5% African Americans when the national average is about 12%. Sarah Palin comes from Alaska, where you could spend a month vacationing and not see one black person. And how about Rep. Bachmann from Minnesota. How many black folk do you think live up there in America's Siberia?
Coincidence that these right wing conservatives who hate Obama and most Hispanics, anyone with a dark face actually, come from the whitest states in the Union?

President Polk initiated a war with Mexico for the sole purpose of extending slavery to the western territories. In essence the US stole vast areas of land from Mexico to accomplish this. One person in particular who believed this and spoke passionately in the House of Represtatives about this injustice was none other than Abraham Lincoln in 1847

I don't take this over-the-top rhetoric all that seriously. The same thing was said of George W. Bush. This is what angty, dispirited losers say when the President is someone other than their own party or ideology. Barack Obama is far, far from the worst President and may yet in hitory go down as one of our greatest. Why? Because all of the great Presidents suffered precisely this sort of overheated abuse while in office. Lincoln was portrayed as a baboon. Teddy Roosevelt was pelted mercilessly by the same sort of wealthy, business interests and their conservative supporters as Obama is today. FDR as well.

My bet is that Ben Quayle will end up little noted or long remembered.

George HW Bush hosted a panel of presidential historians at his library a few years back, at which there was discussion of a recently published ranking of presidents, according to a survey of presidential historians.

He ranked 10th worst, right behind Polk, and remarked "You'd have thought I'd come in higher than James Knox Polk."

It got a laugh, which struck me as odd in a room full of Texans, who if not for Polk would all be living in Mexico.

Its a shame that the torch and pitchfork dopes would rather see even more gridlock on the Hill, with the veto pen possibly in play for two years then try and work collectively to sort out the mess we're in. The absurdity of the hard right knows no shame in its revisionist history and belief that saying something loud enough and enough times will somehow make it true. However, I think, despite our nasty economy, independent voters are beginning to smell the GOP rat and its new iteration, the Tea party. Same snake oil, different label.

Barry cannot hold a candle to the contributions that the Bush and Quayle families have made to this country. Bush Sr. was a war hero and Barry's father was a communist. G.W. loves his country. Barry is trying to destroy it and take it into a socialist country. Bush praises his country and Obarry goes around the world apologizing for the evil past of the country.

I'll certainly take any Bush over the jerk in the White House now. A person would have to have a perverted mind to prefer Barry and Moochelle.
