Tips for dreamers at the Lincoln Memorial rallies

With a few additions and subtractions of a small sort, this Glenn Beck rally on the Mall vs. Al Sharpton rally on the Mall vs. Memory of Dr. King rally on the Mall episode essentially has the same plot as Bride Wars, except that the weddings have been replaced with a group of people yelling partisan slogans and waving poorly-worded signs. Admittedly, most weddings I attend devolve into this at some point. The only real difference is that if they discover something blue at the Glenn Beck rally, it will be tarred, feathered, and removed from the premises.

But, in general, I’m worried about the people going to these rallies. It seems as though there will be a lot of rallying, and (besides the recommendation to avoid the Green and Yellow lines) there has been little direction. And the people there will have so much in common. They will all have strong, definite feelings about Sarah Palin. They will all be holding signs and shouting.

I worry that they will accidentally wind up at the wrong rally, where they will form meaningful, intimate connections with people and later sue them for seduction on false pretenses. "I thought you were here to reclaim America's honor!" they will yell. "I thought you were here for the Sharpton rally!" Usually, people have the decency to space these things out. The Democratic National Convention and the Rally of People Who Have Strong, Negative Feelings About Trees generally book different weekends. But now, everyone’s all on top of each other, at the same location. It’s going to be ugly. This rally-within-a-rally-about-a-rally has taken the "I Have a Dream" speech and turned it into Inception. I don’t want people to get stuck in Limbo.

To assist them, here are a few questions people can ask themselves to make certain they’re at the right rally.

  1. Are you holding a sign?

  2. Does the sign express a desire that the government take a more active role in your life?

  3. Does the sign include a picture of President Obama?

  4. Is it a flattering picture?

  5. Do you have an opinion about Sarah Palin?

  6. Is it strong?

  7. Is it strong -- and negative?

  8. Did you bring your child with you today?

  9. Did your child bring a tiny stuffed elephant?

  10. Is this elephant on fire?

  11. When you see the letter “W,” does it cause you to shake uncontrollably?

  12. With glee?

  13. Are you on Team Edward?

  14. When you learned that Ken Mehlman was gay, were you disappointed in him?

  15. Disappointed because now you don’t think he’ll run the Republican campaign in 2012?

If you answer NO to questions 2, 4, 7, and 10, and yes to the others, probably go to the Beck rally. If you answered YES to these, wander away, trying not to draw attention to yourself.

Remind yourself that maybe this is what Dr. King meant when he said: "With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day" -- free to stand together on the Mall and reclaim America's honor.

Or something.

Very funny. My (white) family will be heading into the mixer to see the sculpture unveiled. My sign--I want my country FORWARD. Those who "want their country BACK" speak in a code, but I think I get it. They want back white privilege, lack of tolerance, plus exploitation of labor and resources. We're not with you. I want a smart government which can keep oil out of our water, germs out of our eggs, and green energy so that we don't have blood in our oil.

Summer movie: Mr. Beck Goes On Washington.

Someone said "If MLK could do it, Glenn Beck can do it."

The only time Beck and his ilk are ever kicked out of a diner is when they grab the wrong waitress' butt.

Sure, this RV caravan of grunting white bigots and racists compares to poor blacks from across the USA making the pilgrimage to Washington, DC to see Martin Luther King.

When pigs fly. The only dreams Beck fans have are embarrassing wet ones.

When pigs fly. Oh, yeah, Beck's fans are arriving via Oinker Airlines, too.

IT'S PRETTY SICKENING THAT YOU GUYS WHO POST COMMENTS, AND WRITE THESE ARTICLES, DO ABSOLUTELY NO RESEARCH BEFORE WRITING THESE HATEFUL THINGS. HOW CAN YOU CALL US WHO ARE ATTENDING THE RALLY, IN NOT SO MANY WORDS WHITE TRASH BIGOTS? JUST NOT RIGHT! IM CURIOUS TO SEE WHICH RALLY WILL HAVE THE SIGNS, SHOUTING, AND BIGOTED RHETORIC THAT YOU SEEM TO THINK THE "RESTORING HONOR" RALLY WILL HAVE. TO MS/MRS PETRI, FOR YOUR INFO, MR. SHARPTON SCHEDULED HIS COUNTER RALLY AFTER GLENN BECK. HE THEN PROMPTLY WENT ON TO MAKE THIS RALLY A RACE THING, BY CALLING ON ALL BLACK AMERICANS TO COME TO HIS RALLY TO OUTDUE BECK. HE SAID THIS BECAUSE IN HIS TWISTED MIND HE THINKS BECK IS GONNA SOMEHOW TARNISH THE GREAT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KINGS' "I HAVE A DREAM" SPEECH. I MEAN, HOW RIDICULOUS IS THAT. DO YOU AGREE WITH HIM? IF SO YOU'RE THE RACIST. I'VE NEVER READ THIS JUNK OF A PAPER BEFORE, AND I'M SURPRISED ANYONE DOES. FOR YOU TO FORM AN OPINION ABOUT THE RALLY, THE ATTENDEES, AND THE CONTENT OF THE RALLY BEFORE IT HAPPENS, JUST SHOWS HOW NARROW MINDED YOU ARE. YOUR TEST TO FIND OUT WHICH RALLY YOU SHOULD GO TO WAS JUST NASTY. I GUESS IN JOURNALISM SCHOOL THEY DON'T TEACH YOU HOW TO RESEARCH. WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS COUNTRY? WHY IS THERE ALL THIS HATE AND DISCONTENT? THOSE ARE SOME QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK YOURSELF MS PETRI. DO SOME RESEARCH ABOUT THE GREAT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, AND TELL YOUR READERS WHAT HE WAS ALL ABOUT. NOT WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT, OR WHAT YOU THINK. PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL. WONDER IF YOU COULD SAY THAT TO US "RESTORING HONOR" FOLKS, AND ACTUALLY MEAN IT LIKE I DO. DO ME ONE MORE FAVOR. IF THERE ARE A "FEW" PEOPLE ACTING A FOOL AT THE RALLY, DON'T ONLY WRITE ABOUT THEM, AND TAKE THE WHOLE RALLY OUT OF CONTEXT. KINDA LIKE THE UNFOUNDED ALLEGATIONS OF SPITTING, CURSING, AND NAME CALLING THAT SUPPOSEDLY HAPPENED TO THE CONGRESSMEN/WOMEN EARLIER THIS YEAR. IF YOU CAN DO THAT, IT WILL SHOW YOU HAVE SOME TRUE AMERICAN HONOR.

I think it would have been much better for Sharpton and other civil rights leaders to ignore the Beck circus. When they counter-protest, they are giving Beck exactly what he craves, more attention. If he had been ignored, it would just have been another Beck cult meeting. Now it is another juicy story for a media culture that thrives on conflict, and they will give it way more coverage than it deserves.

You have to love these 'opinion writers' the Post employs.

They're so talented they can quote Dr.King and use stereotypes against a group of people in the same article!
Do they teach you that level of sass in Journalism school or are you just that ignorant on your own?

Posted by: TSulli | August 28, 2010 8:03 AM | Report abuse

Um, Notabigot1: Using ALL CAPS as if you are simply yelling all the time does not make your argument more persuasive-take a deep breath and calm down--
From Beck's own site here are 2 ways he is restoring honor:
1. He will allow you to donate to a worthy charity to give scholarships to the families of fallen soldiers and then use your generosity to pay himself BACK for HIS expenses. Only what remains will then be donated. I mean he only earns 32 million a year, surely he cannot be expected to pay his own way?

2. He rejects OUR ( that's right) US MILITARY and how they award The Purple Heart and says he, only Messiah Beck himself, can determine who deserves a military honor and will bestow ( like the Wizard of Oz and about as honest he was) Badges of Merit.

If that's honor I am staying home!

Here's a couple tips for the "dreamers" -

1. Don't forget your sunglasses. The glare off all those poor persecuted white faces will be hurtful.

2. Mind the maps you were provided because you certainly don't want to run into any scary black people.

3. And by god, on sunday, when your pastor preaches social justice, get up and walk out immediately.

If this whole rally nonsense wasn't so sad it'd be laughable. It's an assemblage of what's wrong with this coutry and their claims to be moving this country forward. Beck and his preachings are the antithesis of MLK and his mission, but I expect that is lost on the lemmings who take the hucksters word as gospel and don't bother to educate themselves.

Posted by: JilliB | August 28, 2010 8:50 AM | Report abuse

The two rallies are promoting THE SAME THING! Instead, the liberals insult the memory of Dr. King by claiming values, principles, and honorable conduct are incompatible with Dr. King's "dream".

Sharpton and company are afraid someone might infringe on their power base. Civil rights are for blacks only, no whites allowed.

Posted by: kitchendragon50 | August 28, 2010 9:55 AM | Report abuse

I agree with the comment from billyvw. Beck is being given way more coverage than he deserves. Ignore the media clown and at some point he will just go away. We need intelligent, reflective, and productive discourse to move this country forward...not buffoonery.

Beck Awards “Faith Medal” to Beck Show Guest Who Compared Beck to the Biblical King of Judah.

You guys are way off on Beck. Once again, you just speculate on what he wants, and don't listen to what he says.
For instance, with the 1963 Civil Rights Act. Today Al Sharpton showed how little he cares for the truth. He said this morning on a talk radio show that " Yeah, in the earlier part of the 20th century most black men were repubs. That all changed according to him when JFK/LBJ passed the 1963 Civil Rights Act." As we all know LBJ gets the credit for this bill Sharpton also said he came to this conclusion through his own research. that's funny! His research skills are as poor as Ms. Petris'.
The truth of this matter is that in 1957 a Republican President named Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed basically the same bill, but why wasn't it passed you should be asking yourself? Well, LBJ and the Democrats were mostly anti-civil rights, and cared more "at the time" about their party than the rights of African American voters. He was worried it would rip the Dems. apart, so he basically took the teeth out of the bill. Thus the bill had little effect on improving any civil rights issues. Yet to this day LBJ is credited with having passed the 1963 bill, and according to Sharpton changing African Americans from mostly (R)'s to(D)'s.
In conclusion, Sharpton needs to do more research( You too Petri!!!), so he can get the whole truth and history on the issue. That's the problem today. Too many half truths. People only find the little bit of the story that fits their agenda, then that agenda becomes truth. Unfortunately that truth is skewed. Thats why Glenn Beck has the following he does. He tells you the whole truth, then tells you not to believe him. Not because he is lying, but because he wants you to go out and look it up yourself. What a novel idea!!! The whole truth???? You'll never get that from the mainstream media nowadays.

Ms. Petri, you're not, nor will you ever be, Gail Collins.

Wow, Ms Petri, you must be talking about some rally in another country! Last time I checked, no one was carrying signs at the Beck rally. Oh, I see, you must of gone to the Sharpie Al rally by mistake. Wasn't that the one where there were only about 2 dozen people at? Hmmmm.

Petri never attended the Beck rally--I know because I was there and there were NO SIGNS. Odd that you wrote on a non-existant happening, but par for the course of today's "journalists" who write and expose their ignorance for all to read.

What a hateful article. Though I think it was supposed to be funny it came across as just mean spirited. It seems that the Beck rally was well attended and peaceful with no signs, hate speech or politics unlike the other rally. For some reason this angers some on the left. Maybe they need to examine why they are so affraid.

Go to Townhall.com to get a Right Wing version of the same thing.

Posted by: rugerdon | August 30, 2010 8:12 AM | Report abuse

Like most readers of this rag Ms Petri is a card carrying bigot. Not all whites are racists not are they trash. Bigotry and racism has not color attached to it. I am tired of being labeled a racist when I oppose the policies of Obama, I am tired of being called a bigot when I question those who hide behind the Muslim faith and call for my death. Is it any wonder that we have become so divided when "free speech" and "free thought” can only happen when it conforms to one side or the other? For all the talk about freedom it seems however to be lacking in Ms Petri's mind if it embraces God, Country and Family. If she wants to live in a secular world she will find as the French have found even more unrest and prejudice.

One suggestion Ms Petri, before you write an article do some real research and try to see and report both sides fairly; you may find you get more respect and more readers.

Wow. Where do you start?
AL SHARPTON "drew a much smaller crowd"? The Race Hustler - Al Sharpton - drew "A mostly Black Crowd of UNION MEMBERS, Church Goers (whatever that means)and College Students and Activists." We in the North East know them as Sharptons' RENT A MOB. They don't actually have JOBS, except to show up at AL SHARPTON "grass roots" protests.
Like the TAWANA BRAWLEY AFFAIR. A Lying, Phony, Race Hustling Scheme, about a black girl who they KNEW had lied about being RAPED by a bunch of White Men. Al Sharpton and his fellow Poverty Pimp LIARS, tour New York City apart, with this LIE.
Or the CROWN HEIGHTS POGROM. Three days and nights of BLACKS terrorizing the Jewish Community of Crown Heights, because AL SHARPTON stirred up a MOB, transforming a TRAFFIC ACCIDENT, in which a young black child was killed by a car driven by a 'JEW', into a RACE RIOT, with young blacks roaming the streets looking to "KILL THE JEW".
And let's not forget FREDDIES CLOTHING EMPORIUM. That's where AL SHARPTON got his RENT A MOB together, once more, and stood outside a Clothing Store, whose "WHITE INTERLOPER" owner had failed to renew the Lease of a small Black Owned Shop that shared the same building. So AL SHARPTON yelled through his Bull Horn, stirred up the crowd of Mostly Blacks, Union Members, Church Goers, College Students and Activists. And when the smoke cleared, literally, 7 PEOPLE inside the store were Dead. MURDERED by AL SHARPTON as one of HIS CROWD proceeded to put ACTIONS to Sharpton's' WORDS, going inside of the store, SHOOTING whomever was inside, and then BURNING IT to the ground.
THAT is what AL SHARPTON is. He's Jeremiah Wright. He's Louis Farrakhan. He's that piece of GARBAGE from the Black Panthers.
So you tell me who has more of a claim on Martin Luther Kings' DREAM. Folks like BECK, and others, who preach NON VIOLENCE, FAITH, HOPE, and CHARITY? Who preach HONOR to GOD and to each other?
Or the Race Hustling BOMB THROWER with the BLOOD ON HIS HANDS?

Your position on topics should be fair and balanced. Our country is literally dying with this Administration's policies. 78 % of American's are tired of this.

May I disagree with President Obama without being a bigot? I disagreed with Bush more than a little but no one in the media took notice; Cindy Sheehan got some attention though. May I Honor my country with prayers and lit candles at Mass ~ I will, however, omit that from my remarks should anyone "randomly" ask for my opinion about what a concerned citizen might do to honor those whom have paid the ultimate price leaving small children to be raised by a single parent ~ I am thinking of college education and no stress for the deceased Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or Marine.
Does the First Amendment of the Constitution apply to me equally as it does to those with bigger mouth-pieces; the ones whose opinions differ from my own.
May I make a sign, please, to show and tell my disagreement...I'll do my best to spell correctly.
Is there anything I can do to make a difference in the lives of my children beyond my vote (should my man or woman) not win without eliciting the "ill-will" and the "aghast" mentality of folks like you, Petri?
Oh ~ I'm white, over 60 and registered as a Democrat in 1968. I teach History and believe we are fortunate the Union won the Civil War but unfortunate that the benefits of the "victory" were delayed for one hundred years. Can anyone tell me which party was responsible for those delays and which party controlled Congress until 1994? If we are polarized as Ms Petri suggests, can she also tell me why and let the historical record tell the tale ~ or is it all my fault?
Beck, DO NOT CLAIM TO BE A JOURNALIST. DO YOU, PETRI?

Nothing scares me more about the direction of this country than the fact that liberals with race and victim/oppressor complexes seem to be running all the newspapers, television and movie studios. I am not NEARLY as mad at government as I am at our nations liberal-dominated media. If they would report news instead of pushing personal agendas, the people would be able to make up their minds for themselves. But apparently, that is too frightening of a chance to take for liberals. The glaring irony here is that the left is supposed to be for spreading equality amongst all people, yet they consistently distort perspectives only to favor their own opinions. And it is "opinion" pieces like this that push the divide that liberals claim they are trying to heal.

Oh well, I only signed up for this site so I could read Charles Krauthammer and George Will's columns. Miss Petri, I belive I will pass on your future columns.

Hey, Where were you during the debate about the "Patriot Act" and its renewal, and that government free-for-all on our Constitutional & civil rights immediately after 9/11.

Please get your facts right. Don't forget to examine current history, and not just those that fit your political viewpoint. Half of what these clowns on either side of any topic spew is only partially grounded in fact.

I do want to applaude Beck for finding his audience, and market for his goods. He's an outstanding salesman. Those that follow his brand of patriotism have made him a wealthy man. (I prefer the more educated, compassionate brand of patriotism.)

Now I think you stated this fairly. If either side had vision of Dr. King's dream they would have come together. Instead they had separate Dreams and visions. This speaks volumes to me. However, Beck and Palin have no idea of the orignial Dream-no experience in that one or the struggles that come with such a Vision.

It is like Asians, Latino, Latina, Indian and others are not are not a part of the all White/ Black vision. And, I am Black, Scottish and Indian so where do diverse people of all colors fit in with either side? Until they get that straight they missed the vision, dream and God.

I like your article-it is fair. Unlike Charle K. article which always comes off like him-a true idiot!

Could it be, Glenn Beck is the Antichrist. We've been hearing so much lately about the Antichrist from people like his followers and how he is wandering around this planet without us knowing where. Well, I think I've identified him and he is Glenn Beck as Beck has clothed himself with righteousness, while spreading untold amounts of evil. The rally was the beginning of the 3 and 1/2 years that people adore the Antichrist before he turns on them, unleashing torrents of unspeakable horror. And, the fact that Sarah Palin was there clinches this belief for me. When you see Beck sprouting a pair of horns, you'll know the time has come.

Elitists of all parties hate Beck and FOX for showing the public how corrupt the Obama Administration and it's minions (A.C.O.R.N., Sherrod, etc.) are. The rest of the alphabet networks are controlled and will never expose this travesty.

I can’t criticize Ms. P. too much because she is so programmed by the schooling institutions, including the public school system now, that she truly believes this is the way to be a journalist. She will grow up some day, I hope, and become a real pundit of consequence like Mr. Krauthammer.

She is showing us the product of our neglect as a population of parents too busy to check the text books and talk to our children about what is being taught in school/college. The sad thing is, she seems to be young enough to have been raised by her own kind and that is really sad. We have really got a problem because the parents of these young writers are just as elitist and radical as she is.
