Charlie Rangel won't turn the page

Scandal-plagued Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) went to church in Harlem yesterday to receive the blessing of Rev. Calvin Butts of Harlem's influential Abyssinian Baptist Church. That would be the same church where Adam Clayton Powell Sr. and his son, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Rangel's congressional predecessor, preached. Oh, the history of it all. It proved too much for Adam Clayton Powell IV, who is running to unseat Rangel in tomorrow's Democratic primary. "My father and grandfather are turning in their graves seeing how Calvin Butts is selling us out," Powell told the New York Post. "We will turn the page on Election Day."

Unfortunately -- and I hope I'm wrong -- the page will turn, and we'll still be staring at Rangel's face. Sure, folks think the ethical charges against him stink to high heaven. Most voters in Manhattan think he should call it quits and leave Congress entirely. I'm down with that. But I'm afraid the voters in his district will get all goo-goo eyed and nostalgic in the voting booth and completely ignore the ethics charges and other revelations about the 20-term dean of the New York congressional delegation that came to light in the last two years. Rangel's sense of entitlement is breathtaking. I know I bring this up every time I write about Rangel, but would you forget about two checking accounts valued at between $250,000 and $500,000 -- each?! Me, neither. But Rangel somehow failed to report them as required on his congressional financial disclosure forms.

So, while I hope voters in New York's 15th district opt to oust Rangel, I'm not going to bet on it. Rangel is the ultimate cat with nine lives.

Would you forget $5 Million to $25 Million in stock transactions? Me, Neither. But Congressman Michael McCaul did.

I hope Capehart writes about him as well.

Shades of Marion Barry. Rangel will be returned to office regardless of his guilt.

Rangel is building his street cred by standing up to the (white) man.

Charlie Rangel is a charlatan, crook, perveracator and fraud. If he went to Church for a blessing he was mocking our Creator. Until this event Charlie hasn't seen the inside of a Church for years. What Charlie needs to do is pray fervently for forgiveness to that Creator.

Typical example of what is wrong with our government. Been in office too long, arrogant, thinks the law doesn't apply to him. Get out or get voted out.

Charles Rangel proves that Mark Twain's famous quote "The only native criminal class in America is Congress" is correct.

Charlie Rangel showed his courage and his wit when he took to the floor of the House, and challenged the pressure to give up. The New York Times/New York Post yellow press charges against him are warped, twisted and fabricated. Obama told him to drop dead and resign with dignity. Charlie Rangel said no, he will face the accusations and win. Rangel is a fighter for justice and for his district. May he have a landslide victory on Sept. 14th.

Don't know whether Rangle is a rascal or not, but the cat with ninteen lives was Old Adam Clayton Powell, who went off to Bimini to play dominoes and never came back and STILL got reelected and reelected and held a key Chair.

Adam's seat has a history a whole lot longer than the time that Rangle warmed it.
