Why does Haley Barbour think we don't 'know' Obama?

It was a jarring moment from an ordinarily smooth pol. Haley Barbour, governor of Mississippi, chairman of the Republican Governors Association and 2012 presidential prospect -- which helped explain the big turnout a breakfast Wednesday sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor -- was asked why so many people seem to believe that President Obama is Muslim.

"I don't know why people think what they think," Barbour said. Fair enough. But then out came this odd statement: "This is a president that we know less about than any other president in history."

Really? Less than Benjamin Harrison? Franklin Pierce? By the time he launched his candidacy, Obama had written an autobiography and a second, more policy-oriented book threaded through with examples from his personal experience -- though Barbour said he hasn't read these. What is it, exactly, that we don't know about him?

After the formal session had concluded, Barbour elaborated on what he meant. "There is not much known about his time in college or growing up," he said. Actually, governor, Obama has revealed a lot more than George W. Bush was willing to say about what he did when he was young and irresponsible. In "Dreams from My Father," Obama discussed his drug use in high school and college -- "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it" -- and his friendships with Marxist professors.

Barbour, continuing, "We don't know if he chopped down a cherry tree." Uh, you might want to double-check on that tree thing.

"We don't know any of the childhood things we know about Ronald Reagan. I don't say it as an insult or as anything other than an observation. Somebody asked, 'Why would people question things?' We just don't know him."

During the breakfast, Barbour made clear that he did not subscribe to this wackadoodle view. "I accept just totally at face value that he is a Christian," Barbour said. "He's said so throughout the time he has been in public life. That's good enough for me."

But was Barbour trying, none-too-subtly, to fan the flames of Obama-as-Muslim-Manchurian-candidate conspiracy theorists? I doubt it. A big piece of Barbour's message was that the best way to run against Obama and the Democrats was head-on -- on the economy, taxes and debt. Social issues and closet Muslims are so much distracting noise, as Barbour sees it.

I don't pretend to understand the mass delusion about Obama's religion, most prevalent among members of Barbour's party, but I suspect there is something significant in Barbour's characterization of Obama as an unknown quantity. Except I would translate it this way: This discomfort, among a disturbing segment of Americans, is not that Obama is unknown as much as that he is unfamiliar. It's not that, as Barbour put it, those who question Obama's religion "just don't know him" -- it's that they don't know anyone like him.

Barbour pointed to the fact of Obama's brief tenure in public life, but this cannot be the real explanation. At another point in the session, Barbour was describing the potential advantages of non-career politicians such as his nominee for governor of California, former eBay chairman Meg Whitman. She's not exactly a household name, but no one's whispering that Whitman has a secret religion.

This unfamiliarity mattered less to people when Obama was the anti-Bush than it does, perhaps, when he is the actual president presiding over an actual economy. That may help explain why the number of people who believe he is Muslim has grown since the election. Anxiety is the mother of conspiracy theories, and there is more than enough anxiety to go around right now.

As for Barbour -- maybe he could try reading one of the books by the man he might end up running against?

Ruth Marcus is full of it. We actually know quite a bit about Barack Obama's college years??? Really?

Ms. Marcus... why don't you tell us what Barack Obama's grades were at Occidental College and Columbia University? It might be rather difficult since unlike Mr. Bush and Sen. McCain the current President didn't release his grades to the public so that they could be considered when by voters.

In fact, President Obama STILL hasn't released his grades to the public... and the Washington Post has thus far refused to do any "investigative reporting" on the matter.

But don't let any of that arrogance stop you from criticizing a fair statement from Gov. Barbour... the American people don't know much about their current President.

The problem that most conservatives, especially southern ones like Barbour is that Obama's black. He's black and even if they are relatively enlightened and willing to accept blacks are fully human, as in "all men are created equal" there is something that just stops them, eats them, when they see a black man and a black family in the White House, as president and first lady.

Not that there aren't some policy differences, but the basis of the problem is that.

I think Barbour is referring to the fact that this guy came out of nowhere, was marketed as the "one" but had no "pay his dues" time, unlike Hillary who was CLEARLY the most qualified but somehow not chosen. Also, we see the prompter every day, but he only goes off prompter every once in a while, and when he does it's so random we all sit back and wonder "who is this guy, really?" He attends a church for 20 YEARS but acts like he never really listened (!) he is raised by grandparents who "act like typical white people (!) but now refers to their hardship, talks about playing sports like "someone from the special olympics (!) then points his finger at's pretty weird.

Of course Mr. Barbour is despicable. And nasty. He is doing what the Democrats did to President Bush.

For the sake of the USA. - stop this stuff.

Marcus's rebuttal of Haley Barber's ignorance about Obama by pointing out that he clearly hadn't read Obama's books reminds me of a comment once made by David Gergen, popular commentator, former US News and World Report editor, and advisor to four Presidents, three Republicans (Ford, Reagan and Bush I), and one Democrat (Clinton). When asked by the questioner what was the difference between serving in a Republican White House versus a Democratic one he commented "Well, the staff in the Democratic White House read better books." Then he corrected himself and said, "Well, make that: Democrats read books!" Then he went on to describe the comic books and westerns that characterized Air Force One under Republicans, and contrasted it with the energizing and stimulating environment with Clinton's people. Clearly Haley Barber fits into the well-established Republican mould. :-)

Just realized I misspelled Barbour's name earlier. Apologies to him. Probably a Freudian slip.

Mrs. Marcus is just too polite to say the words straight out: a significant part of the population - white,Southern, rural, perhaps - is finding it very difficult to cope with the fact that a black man of high achievement is President of the United States.

They had no problem accepting George W. Bush, a white man (and pseudo-Southerner) who had doors opened for him for his entire life, but who had taken his advantages and done very little with them (bad student at top schools, business failure even with easy access to investment capital, alcoholic (ask his wife), "success" as president of the Texas Rangers, a PR-type business position which required almost no effort, and a one-term Governor ). (Also a President who did not take the threat of Al-Qaeda seriously until it was too late, and a President who was on vacation 970+ days during his two terms.)

But Mr. Obama, who has been transparent about the obstacles in his life (READ HIS BOOKS - but for those of you who won't: had a devoted mom who was also dedicated to her career and who either took her young son with her on her worldwide travels or left him behind, a father whom he met once in his life) has taken a different tack. Nobody handed HIM anything. He apparently has made a positive impression on many of the people he met as he grew up and received a top-flight education. He then took that education and instead of "cashing it in" at a big law firm or corporation, he went to work in Chicago as a lowly "community organizer" and figured out how politics worked and how to get things done for the community - which is why he began to run for political office.

The idea that this President - who has achieved more legislatively in two years than most Presidents, even though the economy he inherited from the last administration was in critical condition - is being described as a non-citizen (his birth certificate is ON LINE!) and a non-Christian (wasn't his CHRISTIAN pastor offensive to everybody?) and a "socialist" (in a country whose entire elderly population depends on socialist income support and health programs!)- is deeply offensive to those of us who are very, very proud of this country's character as a land of opportunity for people of every ethnic and racial background.

Barbour is just playing to the willfully ignorant. It's obvious that the republicans think this is a winning strategy, they've been using it for years. I think Americans are smarter than that. The loud, vocal and over exposed maligned masses are being over played, I really believe that the typical American voter isn't going to be swayed by playing to ignorance.

As a native Northerner who has lived and worked in the Deep South for many years now, I believe (yes this is my opinion) that many white Southerners like Barbour have a deep-seated revulsion about African-Americans in the White House that is linked to their White Supremist hygiene theories. From childhood, they were taught that mixing with Blacks was repulsive, sitting on the same bus seat, using the same bathroom, and God forbid the ultimate, gross-out injury is having "them" live in the White House, where they sleep in the President's bed and shave in his sink. That is the core of "them" versus us and then it extends to anything different from their narrow view of the world.

Barbour is the quintessential white Southern politician charicature that to me, is grossly offensive and laughable. It still amazes me, "Does this archetype still actually exist?" Unfortunately, in the backward traveling time machine known as Mississippi, it does.

Obama has a very scant public record. A few years in the IL senate where he took many present votes and was little known. A minimal record as US Senator. He began running for President within months of being sworn in as Senator. Unlike every other candidate he has refused to release his college transcripts or his medical records. In terms of religion, Hillary Clinton hinted he was a Muslim when her team released a photo of Obama in Muslim garb. He referred to his Muslim Religion in an ABC interview with George Stephanopolis. He either mispoke or it was a Fruedian slip. He is always reaching out to Muslims from the White House, refuses to label terrorists as Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorists and asks the director of NASA to devlop ties with the Muslim Community as a top priority. Unlike Bush and Clinton he and his family are never photographed leaving a church on Sunday Morning. All told enough to cause widespread confusion about his religious persuasion.

Okay. Let's play Ruths' Game. What DO we know about Barack Hussein Obama?
We KNOW that he was BORN Muslim. We KNOW that he was born to a Muslim Father. And THAT makes him Muslim. We KNOW that he was brought up in Muslim Kenya and Muslim Indonesia. We KNOW that he went to Muslim Schools there. We KNOW that these Muslim Schools teach things like:"Barack! Look out! There's a JEW behind that rock! KILL HIM!" We KNOW that. Don't we Ruth? We KNOW that he went to Mosque and heard all the DEATH TO AMERICA, DEATH TO ISRAEL stuff. We KNOW that he knelt on his Prayer Rug, facing MECCA, and prayed to Allah 5 times a day. All these things we KNOW.
We KNOW that he had a COMMUNIST - Frank Marshall Davis - for a MENTOR. We KNOW that he sat in a HATE CHURCH and listened to the Sermons of a White Hating, Jew Hating, America Hating. Louis Farrakhan Loving, Jeremiah Wright, for 20 YEARS.
We KNOW that he started his Political Career in the living room of 2 DOMESTIC TERRORISTS. We KNOW that this Commander In Chief, began his Political Career in the living room of a couple who KILLED Police Officers, BLEW UP Recruiting Stations, and BOMBED the Pentagon. (Am I going too fast?)
We KNOW that he has all of his pertinent BIOGRAPHICAL Paperwork, SEALED in a Vault in Hawaii. Birth Certificate. College Grant Paperwork. College Entrance Paperwork. College Thesis. Medical Records.
We KNOW that he "Sought out the MARXIST PROFESSORS and the ANARCHISTS" when he got to college. We KNOW of his Associations with the BLACK PANTHERS. We KNOW of his disdain for THIS COUNTRYS' way of life. Our Economic System. The MIDDLE CLASS. Private property. The MILITARY.
So you see? We know a LOT about this THING in the White House. And RUTH knows all the same things that I do. And so do all her Media Buddies. And that's why they didn't tell YOU. (JournOlist) Because they didn't want YOU TO KNOW. Because THEY KNEW, that if YOU KNEW who this guy REALLY WAS, you would NEVER vote for him.
Am I right, Ruthie? Of course I am.

You're an idiot and if this is what you're really upset about than it's depressing. We have a congress in gridlock, and probably going to be even worse once the Tea Baggers get in. And you're over there pretending to be worried about college grades. We all know that's just a cover so you don't have to say publicly that you don't want a black man as president.

Oh and the colleges refused to release the grades, because it's up to them to protect the privacy of their students. Obama allowed them to release them, but they still declined.

Posted by: pathfinder12 | September 9, 2010 9:30 AM | Report abuse

Actually, he meant we don't know much about him except what he himself has told us (who knows if any of that is true), or maybe he meant that we don't know as much about him as we do about Sarah Palin (thanks to the press), or maybe he meant we don't know things like what his grades in school were, or how he financed (or why he received financial aid) his schooling, things like that. Ya think?

Posted by: MikeMcLamara | September 9, 2010 9:33 AM | Report abuse

It would be fun if the five colleges Palin attended would release her grades.

Posted by: SayNoToGOP | September 9, 2010 10:00 AM | Report abuse

Why is it any of your business if the Obama received financial aid when he went to college? What does that have to do with anything? Barbour is just towing the republican party line, reciting the same crappy talking points, that we don't know enough about Obama. This country elected President Obama. A majority of Americans decided they knew enough to elect him President of the US. That's all you need to know. Whatever his elementary school records were, whatever his college transcripts were, what his financial aid package included, doesn't matter one single bit right now.

I think you mean while we know a lot of facts about him, there's no handy narrative which comes to mind; we haven't seen someone like him. Like GWBush, frat boy cheerleader; Clinton, fat boy band leader with alcoholic stepfather; GWHBush, WASP aristo; Reagan, frat boy with alcoholic father; Carter, engineer nerd peanut farmer; etc. etc. He doesn't fit the narratives for black leaders we're used to: preachers with a bit of con man in them. Granted all the narratives are limited, but they at least give us a handle on the man.

Because this is what Republicans do whenever there's a Democrat in the White House. They undermine and delegitimize. Barbour knew exactly what he was doing.

Read this article by Robert Parry - "A Method to Republican Madness." He briefly gives the history of Republicans and the last 4 Democratic Presidents. He says:

In this analysis, the Republicans believe they can reclaim the lucrative levers of national authority by making the country as ungovernable as possible while a Democrat is in the White House, essentially holding governance hostage until they are restored to power. Then, the Democrats are expected to behave as a docile opposition “for the good of the country” (and usually do).

The “destroy Obama” game plan tracks most closely with Newt Gingrich’s strategy for undermining Bill Clinton 16 years ago. But today’s strategy also traces back to Richard Nixon’s sabotage of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Vietnam peace talks in 1968 and Ronald Reagan’s October Surprise gambit against President Jimmy Carter’s Iran hostage negotiations in 1980.

In all four cases – covering the last four Democratic presidencies – the Republicans did not behave as a loyal opposition but rather as a single-minded political enemy that viewed the White House as its birthright and Democratic control of the Executive Branch as illegitimate.

He concludes with why they do it - because it works. We see that it's working again.

Why does anyone think we're entitled to see his college grades? We know where he attended, that he graduated, that he served as editor of the Harvard Law Review--that's plenty of evidence that he's a very bright guy.

I agree that the major source of discomfort for a lot of white America is that a black man is in the White House. They aren't able to articulate that prejudice, often even to themselves, so they grab at any other reason to find him suspicious. As a white woman who has often dated outside my race, I can tell you--there are hidden pockets of racism in even the most seemingly unlikely places. My parents always told me that racial prejudice was wrong, but when I began to date black men, my mother pleaded with me to "find a nice white guy instead." No one who knows her would ever consider her a racist...but there it was, surprising even to her.

If the only black people you've ever heard of are creepy people like Mike Tyson or Willie Horton, you might not know what to do with a well-spoken, black college professor who's smarter than you are. Haley Barbour is a dolt, but that's not so unusual in Mississippi.

If you are unwilling to call for an investigation of a man who attempts to sell you a bridge in the desert I have some beach front property in Florida at the intersection of I75 and Florida # 29 that I want you to buy.

If you place a down payment on a contract for the bridge in the desert and the beach front property in the swamp I would conclude that you voted for Obama

Do you really think AKA Obama would have won the election if all the things he is hiding were made known?

Do you really think AKA Obama will be able to finish his first term if all the things he is hiding are made known?

The only conspiracy is the media and the obots who suppress the revelation of AKA Obama's history.

If you need more evidence that Obama is a Muslim (his foreign name should be enough) look at how he is trying to stop Pastor Jones up in Gainesville from burning Quorans. Would a Christian try to stop a Christian pastor from burning a fake holy book full of lies? Not if he was a Republican, he wouldn't!

Well, here we go. Yesterday, Eugene Robinson made a major attack on Barbour and today, it's Ruth Marcus. The Post is rightly concerned about Barbour and the damage he can do to Obama and the Democrats. Barbour is a savvy and canny politician even if can be vilified for being a Southern from Mississippi. Let's see, who will the Post send up next to condemn Barbour? Jonathon Capehart? Colbert King? Note to the Post: Neither Robinson nor Marcus have the intellectual candlepower to combat Barbour. Neither for that matter do Capehart or King.

The Post should do a side by side for the last several Presidents. What background documents were made available? What ones are kept secret. That would prove to these rightwingers that Obama is the most open President in history.

Posted by: jy151310 | September 9, 2010 6:09 PM | Report abuse

The Post will forever toe the JournoList line. "Instead, take one of them – Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares –- and call them racists" This piece is JournoLism 101. The "racist" mantra is not really a smear but instead what the Post believes - that ALL white people are racists, and those (of any race) who do not vote Democratic, or who are from the South, the West, the Plains States, etc. are Nazis, (Ryan Donmoyer on Journolist). As such the ""F**king NASCAR retards" (Spencer Ackerman on Journolist) are entitled to none of the normal social conventions of fairness or decency or benefit of the doubt which extends to human beings.

It is very fair to say that no one has ever been elected president with as little public record as Pres. Obama. No one became president about whom the public knew less when he was elected. Your examples - Pierce and Fillmore - demonstrate that admirably.

Pierce, per wikipedia, "served in the State House from 1829 to 1833, and as Speaker from 1832 to 1833. Pierce served in the state legislature of New Hampshire while his father was governor. In 1832, Pierce was elected as a Democrat to the 23rd and 24th Congresses (March 4, 1833 – March 4, 1837). He was only 27 years old, the youngest U.S. Representative at the time. In 1836, he was elected by the New Hampshire General Court as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving from March 4, 1837, to February 28, 1842." Thereafter he was a brigadier general of volunteers during the War with Mexico, and celebrated for that fact. People knew who Pierce was, as a man and as a politician.

Fillmore was elected Vice-President, so really is not a good analogy. However he was better known than Obama. In 1828, Fillmore was elected to the New York State Assembly serving three one-year terms, from 1829 to 1831. He later won election as a Whig to the 23rd Congress in 1832, serving from 1833 to 1835. He was reelected serving from 1837 to 1843, declining to be a candidate for re-nomination in 1842. He came in second place in the bid for Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1841. He served as chair of the House Ways and Means Committee from 1841 to 1843 and was an author of the Tariff of 1842. After leaving Congress, Millard Fillmore was the unsuccessful Whig candidate for Governor of New York in 1844. He was the first New York State Comptroller elected by general ballot, and was in office from 1848 to 1849. As state comptroller, he revised New York's banking system, making it a model for the future National Banking System. Again, there was much more public record for Fillmore than for Obama, and the public knew who he was and what he stood for.

In part due to the JournoList co-ordinated action to suppress any negative information about Mr. Obama, during his candidacy, there are huge gaps in people's knowledge of his background - particularly his religious background.

Sam Sewall aka Aristotle the Hun is once again proving that not only is he wrong, he's a liar and a bigot:

"If you are not suspicious of a man who hides his history I have a bridge in the desert I want to sell you."

The President published a memoir about a decade before he even thought of running for the White House. That's not concealing anything.

"If you are unwilling to call for an investigation of a man who attempts to sell you a bridge in the desert I have some beach front property in Florida at the intersection of I75 and Florida # 29 that I want you to buy."

Sorry, but there are plenty of bridges in the desert, most notably London Bridge, which was transplanted to Arizona around 40 years ago. You're also forgetting that people in the desert have just as great a need to bridges over dry gullies as New Englanders do over the Connecticut River.

"If you place a down payment on a contract for the bridge in the desert and the beach front property in the swamp I would conclude that you voted for Obama"

Sorry, toots, but salt marshes in my neck of the woods frequently abut beaches. Did you flunk geography in middle school, or are you just stupid?

"Do you really think AKA Obama would have won the election if all the things he is hiding were made known?"

The "things he is hiding" are smears and lies promulgated by birthers, PUMAs, and outright bigots. 69 million Americans clearly decided to ignore the smears and vote Democratic. That you don't like this isn't my problem.

"Do you really think AKA Obama will be able to finish his first term if all the things he is hiding are made known?"

Of course he will. See above.

"The only conspiracy is the media and the obots who suppress the revelation of AKA Obama's history."

You're forgetting Orly Taitz' paranoid ravings, Borderraven's illiterate attempts to "prove" that spring break in Hawaii lasted until October, and the seditious lies of Sharon Rondeau and her gang.

"Obama “I have nothing to hide but I’m hiding it.”"

Bullshit, and you know it.

"Evidence Obama was born in Kenya provided to all of Congress"

And Lucas Smith's forgery trumps a certified Hawaiian birth certificate how?

"Smith traveled to Kenya, specifically Mombasa, with the intent to obtain a copy of the original birth certificate of Barack Hussein Obama II"

And the "document" he came back with was denounced as a forgery by anyone and everyone who wasn't a stone birther. Not only that, it doesn't look a thing like ANY Kenyan birth certificate, past or present.

Give it up, Sammy old cock. You're wrong, you've always been wrong, and you'll continue to be wrong on the day in January when Barack Obama hands over the Presidency to his duly elected successor in 2013 or 2017.

@SameOldTired -

Sam, stop posting under sockpuppets. It's most unattractive.

Also, NONE of the documents you demand is relevant to the President's birth in Honolulu - which is confirmed by his birth certificate, his mother's passport application, two contemporary newspaper notices, a letter relating the birth of a child to a woman named "Stanley," AND Indonesian school records that clearly and unequivocally state that he was born in Hawaii (and isn't it funny that birthers latch onto the part of those records pertaining to the President's stepfather but ignore the part that states he was born in the United States?).

@ster1 - the Post and Email is run by a contemptible and un-American seditionist named Sharon Rondeau who has openly and repeatedly called for a military coup because she hates the President so much. She is a liar, a traitor, and a disgusting excuse for a human being, and I am appalled that otherwise reputable organizations like the New Britain Symphony employ someone with such a deep-seated hatred of America.

Forget the comment from Barbour. All I need to know is that obama's time as president has shown he's not even competent to run for mayor of Chicago.

Gov. Barbour was being polite. He knows that many people think BO is a Muslim, because his father was a Muslim, his step-father was also, he praises and bows before Muslims while criticizing Americans, most of whom are Christians, he said that there's nothing prettier than the sound of the call to prayer, etc. People who don't follow politics religiously might be confused! :)
If Gov. Barbour had said these things to the reporter, you people in the lame stream media would have gotten your panties in a wad!

We don't really know Obama because the mainstream media decided to do an imitation of the see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil monkeys when it comes to potentially questions raised about his background and thinking. In many cases, there are probably innocent but embarrassing answers to these questions, but rather than have The One endure embarrassment, the mainstream media attacked those asking the questions, creating a lot of fodder for conspiracy theories.

For example, Barack Obama's mother was described by high school friends as a fairly militant atheist. His school registration in Indonesia lists his religion as "Islam", he mentions Koran classes in his memoir, and he recited the Muslim call to prayer for a New York Times columnist who was impressed with his first rate accent. Does that prove Barack Obama was ever a Muslim? Of course not. But it shows he was exposed to a Muslim education as a child and that the narrative about being brought up Christian is probably a bunch of baloney to avoid turning off voters who might care. That he sad in Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years and never heard anything anti-American is also a bunch of baloney, when because he really didn't attend church all that often or because he heard it and simply ignored it (or even agreed with it).

The mainstream media seems to think its job is to run cover for Obama and attack those who ask potentially embarrassing questions. The job of the mainstream media, were it objective, would be to put the facts on the table and let the people decide what they think of them. That the mainstream media blatantly filters and covers up things that might embarrass Democrats in general and Barack Obama in particular is what created the popularity of talk radio and Fox News and it's also what feeds many of the conspiracy theories about Obama. How about doing something called "investigating the facts" instead of playing ostrich with the facts?

The little media that cried propaganda ends the same way that the little boy who cried wolf does, with people not believing the deceiver, even when they tell the truth.

Liberals want to know why we think Obama is a Muslim... Lets check out that bastion of right-wing hate... The L.A. Times:

...His former Roman Catholic and Muslim teachers, along with two people who were identified by Obama's grade-school teacher as childhood friends, say Obama was registered by his family as a Muslim at both of the schools he attended.

That registration meant that during the third and fourth grades, Obama learned about Islam for two hours each week in religion class.

The childhood friends say Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque. "We prayed but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played," said Zulfin Adi, who describes himself as among Obama's closest childhood friends.

My Dear Ruth,

Unlike the chattering classes, not every American read President Obama's books and it must be said (sorry to you and "journalists" everywhere, your class refused to write about specific parts of his books that might be a little more than revealing. Who was the mysterious "Frank" for example? Did Mr. Obama leave out the part about his running on the New Socialist Party for the Illinois Senate seat? Did he leave out his grades? His medical records? His long form birth certificate? His attendance at the "Little Red Schoolhouse" in Washington State? His registration as a Muslim in elementary school? Oh dear, it looks like he did leave those things out of his books. And so did you and all your colleagues who pretend to be reporters. You also left out videos of Obama saying blithely that in order for his energy plan to work, electricity rates would "necessarily skyrocket." Where or where were you, Ruth? Where oh where? And by the way, why should we pay any attention to you or Mr. Obama now, that he know that you intentionally hid all these things form the American public due to your advocacy and malfeasance of responsibility to the American people. Shame on you and yours, Ruth. Shame.

I hate doing this, but it's the only way to explode the Left's willful obliviousness. Try this thought experiment Ruth: a guy with a thin resume comes out of nowhere to win the Presidency of a Muslim majority nation on vague but soaring rhetoric. He has the most right-wing voting record in the legislature. His mentors, associates, friends and minister were hard right wingers, some of whom spout hate against any religion or tradition outside Christianity. He lived in his formative years overseas in the largest Christian country and attended a Christian school as a Christian. And there are many black holes in his background including his school transcripts from major universities. His very first speech as President is delivered to the propoganda arm of a Christian monarchy that finances aggressive and often violent missionaries around the world. He orders the symbols of other religions to be covered when he speaks in front of them. He goes around the world bowing to Christian leaders but snubbing leaders of other faiths or of non-Christian countries. He constantly apologizes for his country. He seems not to fully acknowledge or respond to a systematic assault on the country by Christian extremists and works to give convicted Christian terorists the right to civilian trials and supports the building of a church on the site of a religiously inspired Christian attack on his own country. Officially, he insists he is not a Christian but does not publicly practice his avowed faith. Many people begin to suspect that he is in fact a Christian or are at least not sure of where he stands and are therefore open to the possibility. In that case, Ruth, would you and your liberal friends regard public opinion with exaggerated head-scratching, taking a "go figure the crazies" viewpoint? Don't you tire of the pretense of not getting this? This is why you are losing readers and a free country, propoganda does not sell.

I am really surprised to see Ruth Marcus missed the whole campaign of 2008. Everything about Obama was dedicated to hiding himself.

It starts with the teleprompter for a simple stump speech previous candidate has ever been so afraid about being off script. It follows with all the secrecy about his time at Columbia and Harvard. Obama is the first President of the Harvard Law Review to never publish anything. Why did the brilliant and talented Obama, after the Law Review, not go after a clerkship with a Federal Judge.

Wat, darling Ruth, was the final status of the Annenberg Challenge? We don't know because the records have been squirreled away. Remember Obama claiming Ayers was "just a guy in the neighborhood" and he was inaware of the Reverend Wright's black liberation theology.

How Marcus can claim we know all about Obama can only be the ravings of a delusional columnist. If Marcus wishes, I will be glad to go onto a stage with her and ask her some questions about Obama that we should have known prior to the election. Certainly, Marcus is confident she knows all the answers. Right?

@Russellburgett -

Sorry, but you're forgetting that the President became a Christian and was baptized as an adult. He absorbed about as much Islam as a Protestant child who attends a parochial school because it's the only decent place to get an education.

Also, even if he WERE a Muslim, so what? Please show me where in the Constitution or American law a Muslim is ineligible to hold any public office.

No, shame on you for repeating the smears you get on right-wing web sites, especially about the birth certificate the President released two years ago.

Posted by: Ellid | September 10, 2010 5:09 PM | Report abuse

@Ringo2 -

Whomever you're describing, it certainly isn't President Obama, whose first speech as President was either his Inaugural Address in Washington or his joint address to Congress somewhat later, or possibly his radio address on January 24, 2009. He didn't deliver a speech pertaining to Muslim issues until JUNE, as you would know if you were interested in anything but spreading lies from right-wing smear sites.

Thanks for showing yourself to be a very gullible man. Have you tried looking up a debunking site like before you post?

Posted by: Ellid | September 10, 2010 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Ellid; all,

actually, BHO has NEVER released his REAL birth certificate, his academic records, his complete tax returns, his medical records or almost anything else. what he HAS released is described as "redacted, recreated, summerized or approximate".

WHAT he DID release is a Certificate of Live Birth, which simply is a statement that the child was born ALIVE (as opposed to stillborn.).
(my first cousin's wife, being adopted, has a CoLB, as her birth certificate was DESTROYED by the State of TX to spare "the child any possible or subsequent embarrassment" for being born of unmarried parents AND to protect the parents from being, later, identified. fwiw, Rosanne's CoLB is dated almost TWO YEARS after she was born.)= thus, a CoLB is NOT a birth certificate & is GENERALLY only issued if there is NO birth certificate OR if the birth certificate has been destroyed for some reason.

nonetheless, i couldn't care LESS about his birth certificate or the LACK thereof. - no matter the "unusual circumstances" that may attend a live birth (for example if the parents are UNmarried), it is NOT the fault of the infant!

otoh, there would BE NO CONTROVERSY about BHO's past IF he would have (as ALL the other candidates DID) disclosed ALL of his personal records, without an attempt to DECEIVE the public.
(for example, i've know a more than i want to know about the VPOTUS's openly disclosed "rectal bleeding episodes, due to an accident several years ago"!)

NOTE to all: i've spent most of my adult life as a city/county/state/federal LEO/criminal investigator & "my sixth sense", developed over 3 decades of police work, tells me that BHO is HIDING SOMETHING in his past that would reflect NO CREDIT upon him and/or would be EXTREMELY embarrassing to him/his family.
further, whatever it is that he is hiding from the public is really BAD NEWS, imVho!

perhaps, we need a new federal law that CRIMINALIZES the "failure to disclose" all personal records of any candidate for POTUS/VPOTUS/SCOTUS/other high offices.

just my opinion.

yours, TN46
coordinator, CCTPP
