Why we don't talk about Barack Obama 'like a dog'

"They talk about me like a dog," Barack Obama said to a Labor Day rally in Milwaukee on Monday. "That's not in my prepared remarks, but it's true."

Apparently, this has been slang for some time, and it's not original to President Obama. But I think it could use some reexamining. Based on my experience with dogs, we say far more positive things about them than Republicans have been saying about President Obama lately. If Obama suddenly grabbed my favorite shoes and worried them with his teeth, I would not commend him. "What are you doing?" I would shout. "Get out of here! Go govern!"

People say lots of things about dogs they never say about Obama. "We're absolutely, 100 percent confident this dog was born in the United States," they say. "We don't need to see its birth certificate."

"Speak!" these people tell their dogs. "Stop talking!" they tell Obama. "Stay!" they tell their dogs. "We’re going to unseat you in 2012!" they tell Obama.

When dogs shake people's hands, we are impressed. Obama shakes lots of hands, and nobody seems particularly excited. If dogs suddenly change positions, say by rolling over, people are elated. Not so with Obama, who gets accused of "backsliding." Once my dog backslid, but that was because something was the matter with its leg.

When dogs have unusual middle names, no one bats an eye. I had a dog growing up whose middle name was literally Tape Recorder -- because we had to pick a name by family consensus, and that was the sort of thing consensus usually resulted in -- and no one ever gave us any trouble about it. People never accuse their dogs of being Muslim, even though they haven't gone to church with them for years.

Dogs have no enemies -- well, maybe Blue Dogs do, but not real dogs. They love you and never try to do controversial things such as expanding health care or wandering around saying how sorry they are about the oil spill. Then again, they don’t speak English, and they don’t understand how toilets or the Mideast peace process work. The reason we love them is because dogs are, well, not the sharpest lightbulbs in the drawer. All they require is food, water, love, and the occasional walk. And they seem to look up to us, even if we can't figure out how bending the curve is supposed to work. So everyone loves dogs, except for Michael Vick and the owners of the dogs in those ASPCA commercials. If someone asked us to replace our dogs with Obama, most of us would refuse. "My dog loves me uncritically," we would respond. "And when I am tired after a long day at work, he doesn't want me to rethink immigration policy."

Sure, President Obama is in the doghouse now, with polls showing his popularity at its lowest point yet. But being president means doing exactly what he's been doing: taking positions, pushing policies, using his political capital to enact changes he believes in. Often, people don't agree with those changes. But he actually thinks substantively about these things. And that means alienating some people. Dogs never have this problem. They have no hard choices, and we don't seriously expect them to fix the economy -- facts that account for their continued popularity. If we actually were talking about Barack Obama like a dog, he'd be doing something wrong.

When overanxious Republican columnists talk about Obama's approval ratings being "in the doghouse", keep in mind they are near 50, twice what Bush's were in his last three years and five times what Cheney's were. The GOP has no ideas whatsoever and can't do anything but try and generate hatred toward Obama, a president who has racked up more legislative achievements than anyone since Johnson and brought the nation back from the precipice of doom brought on by the Bush/Cheney scorched earth debacle. Every right-winger does nothing but wave polls around claiming vindication, never acknowledging the pollsters use outdated methods relying entirely on land lines which are increasingly only used by cranks.

It is so funny to see all this commentary regarding President Obama's "like a dog" remark. This is a very common expression. My family, friends and co-workers say it all the time regarding how President Obama is treated by talk radio and media on the right. For example, I just said to my sister last week, "Those folks on Fox News talked about President Obama like a dog today."

Please tell me you didn't get paid to write this. Not only is it filled with the typical Republican bashing I expect from the Obama-leg-humping Post, it's terribly written, unimaginative and plain boring. I can only assume you are a 10th grade guest columnist feebly attempting to earn a spot in the Post's hallowed liberal halls. You fit right in.
Face it. Your man is toast. Keep apologizing for him and defending him. Truth is, he's a terrible president who is in way over his head. Get used to it. Woof, woof.

That is why the republican taliban in congress have been successful pushing their talking points..They say nothing and do nothing repeatedly!

The MSM is helping them out with this almost as good as fox!

President Barrack Obama should be treated with the same dignity that the press gives
to former President George Bush, and others in the opponents camp, such as, Sarah Palin; I have never heard anyone say anything negative about her. Even Robert Gibbs, the white house mouth piece shows her complete respect. Thank You Robert For being a man with integrity and morals.

Ms. Petri gulping kool-aid and spinning positively for President Obama is still a refreshing change over every other Post columnist who spend their precious column space obsessing over and over about two tv/radio commentators (Beck/Limbaugh), an ex-Governor from Alaska and a news station (Fox) that has the audacity not to be Liberal. Guys I know that page hits and advertising dollars are important, but can you write about somebody who actually holds an elected Office in Washington and has all the Power? I guess not becasue thats the Democrats.

"Often, people don't agree with those changes."

Just the point Obama and the incompetent Congress have missed. They are supposed to represent the people and states not do it just because they want to. That is why almost 60% of Americans did not want the healthcare bill (that its author admitted not reading). Just because he was given a free Ivy league education does not mean he knows better how to run other peoples' lives. He is naive, inexperienced and certainly not qualified to be president.

Obama will have hell to pay. His teleprompter doesn't like it when the anointed one strays from the script.

And another thing, why did our lord and savior feel the need to tell us that these words were not on his teleprompter. Oh, he is getting really brave.

Republicans and Democrats have called Obama many names... socialist, Big spender, thin-skinned, post-American, Community Organizer, but I've never heard him called a "dog".

The only dog reference I've heard is... when Obama called himself a "mutt" during a speech about his ethnic origin. Yet on the census he only apparently proudly marked "Black"... despite being half-white.

Curious.

The only person who talks about Obama "like a dog" is Obama himself. Not long after being elected, he referred to himself as a mutt. And only recently, on national TV, he referred to himself and American blacks as being "mongrels." This, from the President of the United States.

Are you proud of your whiny, skinny, trash-talking, do-nothing, gold-brick of a President, liberals? Well, I've got news for you. Just wait 'til he ain't Prez. He's going to be REALLY embarrassing then, when he talks "like a dog."

The political machinery picks apart presidents. It started with George Washington - why is Obama surprised that he would be treated any different?

Both parties dug this hole together - the idea that it's about getting elected instead of governing. Democrats and Republicans alike vote for a bill and then attack the President for signing it.

Alexandra, The quote from your column is a highly demeaning comment. You imply that Obama's opposition doesn't understand the meaning of his "brilliant" policies. While the real problem is that it is Obama's basic leftwing ideology that is the problem. His opposition knows all to well the potential damage from the unintended AND intended consequences of his policies.

I maintain that it is the mainstream of the Democrats (thowse who are content with hating and blaming Bush43 for everything because Al Gore lost the Electoral vote and didn't win Election2000)- LibDems who apparently don't understand the negative consequences his agenda will bring to the USA.

And now Obama is playing both the race card and the victim card. Obama is a complete sham.

Obama has good ideas - just poor follow thru. He has surronded himself with either inexperienced and callow staff or extremely partisan and liberal professionals. The other problem I have with him is his priorities - he tends to focus on what is important to him rather than the country as a whole. His focus should be on how does he rid himself of the "boat anchors" Reid & Pelosi. And with a republican congress he might get more done as did Clinton.

I have two dogs. One is a female Border Collie and the other is a mixed breed.
Both were born in the United States. Unlike 0bama neither of them promised me anything. The Border Collie makes sure the other one stays in the yard.It is a bit like politics. I suppose that in the next election we will have Republicans in charge and trying to keep 0bama from straying so far to the left. We need to change Congress because they have been out of control since the '06 elections tossed the Republicans who couldn't keep their president from straying. We have watched as 0bama has spent trillions of dollars seemingly without even reading what he was signing and later being shocked at what was in the bills. My neighbors have a dog who stays in their yard because he gets shocked if he crosses the line.Another neighbor had a dog that barked all of the time but they got a collar that shocked him and now he's quiet all the time. I take it the experience is different for 0bama because even though he was shocked to learn how many people got a million dollar bonus in a bill he didn't read he went ahead and signed more bills he didn't read. The "Summer of Recovery" is over and he's shocked we didn't have a recovery.
Idon't talk about him like a dogI can understand why dogs act the way they do and they have a healthy dose of respect for the people who feed them and make sure they have water and exercise.Obama doesn't seem to have respect for anyone but himself. He sure doesn't have respect for the taxpayers and seems to think that allowing taxpayers to keep some of their money "costs" him something. Perhaps he should have a look at the U.S. v Cryer decision and understand that we actually have a right to keep what we earn.I printed out a copy of that decision and left it on the floor where the mutt could read it.
He peed on it.

President-elect Obama, referring to his mixed parentage, referred to himself - as a mutt like me. Now afraid of losing the mid-term elections - they are in panic mode - and acting like a pack of feral, rabid dogs.

Many people have referred to Rahm Emanuel, the White House Chief of Staff - as a vulgar pit bull. Now it looks like he may become the Mayor of Chicago. The White House is full of fleas and bed bugs.

What Obama has in common with dogs:

- Relatively unintelligent
- Pees on things we care about (like the Constitution)
- Whines a lot
- Doesn't get along with others of his kind (David Cameron, Angela Merkel, Nikolas Sarkozy)
- Doesn't listen to his owner (the American people)
- Short life span (years in office in his case)

What Obama doesn't have in common with dogs:

- People like dogs.

This election is about expected recovery time from the Bush 2007-08 crash which eliminated 500,000 jobs per month, versus the ethnic wedge & fearmongering politics of the far right.

**TIME FOR OBAMA TO START BEING INTELLECTUALLY HONEST!! TELL THE TRUTH! **

Why are Americans turning against Obama you ask?? For starters, he starts his speeches – regardless of subject -- with: “It has taken eight years of Bush policies that drove us into the ditch, and we are not going to give the keys back to them!” He then follows up with a couple of lines regarding “The Party of No!” Thank God for the latter!!

Thomas Sowell states it most succinctly in this excellent column:
"Another political fable is that the current economic downturn is due to not enough government regulation of the housing and financial markets. But it was precisely the government regulators, under pressure from politicians, who forced banks and other lending institutions to lower their standards for making mortgage loans.
These risky loans, and the defaults that followed, were what set off a chain reaction of massive financial losses that brought down the whole economy.
Was this due to George W. Bush and the Republicans? Only partly. Most of those who pushed the lowering of mortgage lending standards were Democrats-- notably Congressman Barney Frank and Senator Christopher Dodd, though too many Republicans went along.
At the heart of these policies were Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who bought huge amounts of risky mortgages, passing the risk on from the banks that lent the money (and made the profits) to the taxpayers who were not even aware that they would end up paying in the end.
When President Bush said in 2004 that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should be reined in, 76 members of the House of Representatives issued a statement to the contrary. These included Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters and Charles Rangel.
If we are going to talk about "the policies that created this mess in the first place," let's at least get the facts straight and the names right."

Please. Obama's campaign took how many millions of dollars from organizations that compared Bush to Hitler? Barry feels trashed talked? And this is all we have to talk about?

Like most everything Petri writes, this column would be used to house train my dog, if it were ever to make it in the print edition of the newspaper. This is what happens when the opinion section turns into a game show.

GOod God! Who is this idiot?

Somebody's kid? WaPo is a joke.
Better the pictures they beg for after every rainstorm

than this. Not embarassed?

Who is this writer? Somebody's kid?

Better use the "people's photos" the POst begs for after every rainstorm.
Or just shut down if you can't afford
any staffers or writers.

Ms. Petri made a comment about our hang up over the absence of obama's birth cert. When I go to my local bank, I hand over my drivers license with my transaction, or quickly produce it when asked for it. This indicates my honesty and good faith. Thats how things are done in fly-over country. In rarified DC, I guess the word of certain people suffices because they are too important to be bothered with such kerfuffle. Next time you re-enter the US from abroad, Ms. Petri, you shouldn't need your passport. Your American accent and your word should suffice.

RField7,

don't worry.

in about 60 days you will see the BIGGEST BLOODBATH in modern political history when your party LOSES BOTH HOUSES of Congress & BHO is America's very own LAME DUCK & LAUGHINGSTOCK for two more years.

OPEN YOUR EYES! - the DIMocRATS are FINISHED as a major party, FOREVER.

when the DIMs chose to ignore the 70% of voters, who just said "NO" to "obamacare", they destroyed themselves, by angering families like mine.

the STUPID, FREE-spending, arrogant actions of the DIMocRAT Party in Congress has so offended (mostly union) families like ours that we will NOT be back.
instead, we will ALL vote as TEA PARTY PATRIOTS!

You're right Ms. Petri, the association of Obama to a dog does not seem to fit. Since he has spent well over 2 trillion dollars in wealth redistribution and simultaneously increased the unemployment rate, my household would more likely equate Obama with a goat.

What the Hell is This!?

Conservatives lining up to refute the charge they mindlessly malign the President and talk about him "like a dog", by piling on personal insults, belittling him and "dogging" him out.

This isn't a "Comments Section" to discuss or critique an article, this is rhetorical Right-Wing Circlejerk.

woof woof (no not wolf blitzer) but even in 2007 he was a dog in sheeps clothing!! he fooled more less half of the people and the others that got him elected didn't care what he stood for they voted for him because of skin color, not because the content of his character,or how he could HELP the country( meaning THIS ONE)

Wow, this was the most pathetic waste of time. This is literally the dumbest article I've ever read. I can't believe you numb skulls actually like to read crap like this.

You are so gullible trying to disprove what Obama meant by the phrase that you disprove your own words by talking about him, Petri, you and the other followers. Use your noodle next time before writing an unintelligent article.

Thanks for proving Obama's point in what a majority of us people call a "figure of speech." To narrow it down more, I don't know if you understand the definition as to what a "simile" is. Here's the definition courtesy of Wikipedia.com: A simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced with the words "like", "as", or "than".

We can all agree now given your foolish article that President Obama stands correct. Last, because you right wing idiots have been too busy chasing your tails lately, let it be known we are going to tear your Ignorance to SHREDS like a dog eating a newspaper come Election Day!

Bobbya200486,

IF you're REALLY so brain-DEAD as to believe that BOTH houses ocf Congress are NOT going to fall to the coalition of the Tea Party & GOP, then i PITY you.

11/02/10 will be a TRUELY BAD DAY for you & every other DIMocRAT Party operative & LIB. = face it, you & the DIMocRATS are FINISHED, DONE, KAPUT & headed into the political wilderness.

NOTHING that BHO, Princess Pelosi & the rest of the LYING, SELF-important LEFT can do will change the outcome one iota. = the DIMocRATS are FINISHED as a major politcal party & the great thing is, you LIBs did it to yourselves.

the USA is naturally a CENTER-RIGHT republic & after this two years, it will be politically FARTHER to the RIGHT! = by 2013, the Congress & WH will be CONSERVATIVE & then we will:
DIS-establish the WELFARE STATE,
abolish "obamacare",
start shutting down the federal leviathion
&
CUT the budget by 20-25% across the board.

maybe you & every other LIB should start looking for another (SOCIALIST) nation to move to. think CUBA! = you certainly won't like the USA after 2012.
(even if you like it now!)

Texasredneck,

Lay off the Glen Beck. If you really wanted to show some pride, you should have just done nothing. The demented republican party is not taking both houses, maybe in whatever "poll world" of yours you live in they are but I wouldn't start placing bets on that if I were you, especially polls with a population of 1,500. It's not accurate unless it shows 90% or above.

You are so ignorant that you have lost all memory of the days the republican party was in congress. Let me tell you a little secret....It wasn't that long ago. Remember how terrible your party handled everything from the economy to war? Remember how the tax cuts didn't create any jobs? Remember your president launched a random war in Iraq without any logical reasoning? Well let me just tell you what the sticker on my bumper says with a picture of a crossed out "W", "I told ya so." And by the way, take your headless body to Canada. They have good health care there, ask Sarah Palin if you don't believe me ya angry leftover!!!

Bobbya200486,

i read your post & discounted it to its actual value to this discussion: NADA, ZILCH, ZERO, NOTHING.

actually, your post is so typical of the SELF-deluded, SILLY, opinions of the rest of the DIMocRAT LOSERS. = what i said was 100% accurate & the DIMocRAT left has brought this coming BLOODBATH on themselves, by passing "obamacare" & a whole bunch of worthLESS boondoggles (which accomplished NOTHING but running up the national debt), against the desires of over 70% (according to the DNC's own internal polls) of the American people
AND
allowing "blue collar familes" like MINE to discover that the DIMocRATS think that our opinions, religious faith, traditional values, PRO-LIFE stance & firm support of the Second Amendment to the BoR are "unsophisticated", "trailerpark trashy", ignorant, "rednecky", "homophobic","hateful" & generally to be disregarded by "the smart set".
(pardon me, but HAVING such an elitist attitude is REALLY STUPID, given the fact that the democrats used to be "the party of the common man" & WARMLY welcomed EVERYONE.)

that ELITIST OPINION on the part of the DIMocRATS is GUARANTEED to cost your party virtually ALL of the lower-middle/blue collar/pink collar working class vote, FOREVER.
in the case of MY family, in the last 6 months or so, FIVE members of the family have QUIT their union, (because of their union's UNthinking/short-sighted support of BHO's STUPID policies) & joined the TEA PARTY.
fyi, our family won't be voting DIMocRAT ever again & what has happened in our family is typical of what is happening to the "DIMocRAT coalition".
(your party will soon be as DEAD politically as the WHIGS are at the current pace.)

by the way, not only do i have a RED NECK but i'm RED all over = i'm a Native American (so that you elitists/DUMB-bunnies/bigots are NOT confused, we are also called American Indians.)
AND
you've just "put your foot in your mouth", clear up to the knee.
(see what i mean about STUPIDLY offending people that you consider to be SOCIALLY INFERIOR to all of you SELF-important, delusional, arrogant, LEFTIST, FOOLS?)

as i told another SELF-impressed DIMocRAT extremist on "PP", we'll be sure to wave "BYE-BYE" to you, on our way out the door. = it's only "polite" to do at least that much.

LAUGHING AT you!

Texasredneck,

Lay off the peyote, wake up, and smell the coffee. Elitist? We aren't the one's in favor of more "wasteful spending" for the rich. Last time I checked, the Bush Tax Cut's that targeted the top down as benefiting the most money and so on FAILED MISERABLY. You're demented party of racist angry old white people, aka palin/mccain leftovers, is not going to take the elections this Nov. The American people are smarter than that in general. You're source of information is misleading more often than not. Think for yourself and get a grip. I'll post here in November. Unlike you, I'm more than happy to share a hit of my peace pipe with you not only now because of how angry you are, but when your party is proven to be full of the most outlandish ideas us people with brains have ever heard. You should be ashamed of yourself when calling yourself human in support of such crazy lunacy! Educate yourself a little more on the facts of what's been done than what you see on tv because if you don't, those that have are prepared to teach you some manners come Nov.

Best,

Bobbya200486

Bobbya200486,

speaking of STUPID, did you support Robert "KKK" Byrd, the SERVING national Klan officer & "one of the leaders" of the DIMocRATS party? = your hero, BHO, said that Byrd (then still alive) "is an everlasting credit to our party & to the USA".

but no matter. in just SEVEN WEEKS, the DIMocRATS will be the PERMANENT MINORITY, as the majority of Americans no longer have even a modicum of TRUST in them.
otoh, the TEA PARTY is growing at 6-8% per WEEK.- at the current rate, we will be larger than the GOP & DIMs combined by 2012.

btw, the "ordinary voters" are also smart enough to figure out that the REAL GOAL of the Tea Party is to DUMP the LEFTISTS & then purge the RINOs out of the GOP & take it over.

fyi, we TP members don't want "a seat at the table" OR "the crumbs" that the GOP wants to offer us. - instead we want the HOUSE (and the SENATE).

laughing AT your SILLY, fact-FREE, posts above.====> are you REALLY ignorant enough to believe that BILGE or do you hope that the rest of us ARE that clue-LESS?

NOTE: the latest non-partisan polling, that i've seen, says a NET LOSS for the DIMocRATS of 11 Senators, 50-65 HoR seats & 8-10 governors. = 11/02/10 will be a BLOODBATH for the DIMs.
furthermore, 2012 will be WORSE for the DIMocRATS/LEFT!.

a personal note to Bobbya200486:

i'll be pleased to smoke with you AFTER we sweep the DIMocRATS out of power on 11/02/10 & make BHO totally irrelevant, until he leaves office on 01-20-2013.
(btw, i've suggested to several TP organizers that we offer to send the Obamas on a PERMANENT vacation, until after the new POTUS is inaugurated. - just think how much FUN they will have & the USA will be MUCH better off without him!)

ROTFL!
