Maybe the Dems should lose the House?

At the conclusion of MSNBC coverage of the One Nation rally earlier this month, anchor Alex Witt asked me what I thought the headline would be. I didn't exactly come up with a headline, but after seeing the crowds gathered at the Lincoln Memorial, I said that the narrative that Democrats and progressives are demoralized and unenthusiastic needed to be revised. I also became convinced that the reports of the certain Republican takeover of the House are premature. This view was reinforced after participating in an interview session Speaker Pelosi held with opinion writers and columnists as Congress fled town to campaign. My perception was sealed after a very detailed and convincing briefing from a senior Democratic Party official last week.

And then over the weekend, I was pushed from the left and the right into thinking that a Democratic hold of the House might not be the best thing -- for Democrats or President Obama.

My reorientation started this past Saturday night when a Democratic Party insider confided in me that he hopes the Democrats lose the House because holding the majority in the next Congress would be a "nightmare." That's because the conventional wisdom is that nothing will get done on Capitol Hill in the next Congress with a narrow majority controlling the House. Think Republican recalcitrance and 2012 presidential politics. Thus, the blame for such inaction would fall squarely on the Democratic leadership. But if the wave of national discontent succeeds in pushing the GOP into the majority in the House (say, by five seats), the public's ire would be focused on the inaction of a party that pledged to do things differently. The benefits of that for Obama are numerous. Particularly, it would give him a useful foil as he heads into what could be a tough reelection fight.

Then came this concurrence from George Will's column on Sunday -- albeit from the opposite direction.

For Obama, the worst result next month might be for Democrats to retain control of both houses of Congress. If they do, their majorities will be paralyzingly small. And their remaining moderates will be more resistant to the liberal leadership: The moderates will have survived not because of, but in spite of, those leaders....

If Democrats retain control of Congress, Obama will seek reelection while being perceived as responsible for everything in Washington, where everything is perceived to be dysfunctional. And anti-Washington fever may be worse than it is today, because the 2010 elections will not seem to have changed very much.

If Democrats lose both houses, Obama will seem repudiated. If they lose neither, he will seem impotent. So, if Democrats lose big, he loses big. If they lose smaller, he loses bigger.

Will's prognosis can only be described as damned if you do damned if you don't. And he might be right. Still, regardless of the drawbacks, I hope that the Democrats hold the House so Obama can at least try to continue making progress on the remaining 30 percent of the promises he says are "undone." But I also hope the president shows more fight and more political smarts in dealing with the 112th Congress than he did with the 111th, no matter which party is in the majority.

Mr Capehart,

just out of idle curiousity, are you drinking something in your morning coffee, beyond cream/sugar?

the DIMocRATS are about to experience the largest BLOODBATH at the polls in US history. = it will NOT even be close.

as of Sunday morning, i count over 80 HoR races that will turn from DIMocRAT to GOP & 11- 13 US Senate seats that will switch.
on 11/03/10 BHO becomes America's LAMEST DUCK & TOTALLY IRRELEVANT until he leaves office on 01/20/2013. ====> you can thank BHO & his coven of bigots/leftists/lunatics/fools/Chicago machine thugs/union bosses/common criminals for this DISASTER for your party.

in NOV 2012, we TP folks will remove BHO & another massive group of leftists/DIMocRATS/RINOs & start dismantling the federal bureaucracy to return this country into being a truly represenative CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.

what is amusing to me as a "community organizer" & "street activist" (i fought the KLAN of MS/AL/GA/LA in the 1960s, with the other students of USSL. now i fight for HONESTY & COMMON SENSE in the government - this means NO leftist DIMocRATS in Congress and/or the WH, ever again!) is that the DIMocRATS did it to themselves, when:
1. they nominated/helped elect a WEAK, HALF-intelligent, mincing, arrogant FOOL as POTUS,
2. the DIMs passed "obamacare" against the wishes of 70+% of the voters,
3. wasted TRILLIONS of dollars on NOTHING that would actually turn around the US economy,
4.ENRICHED the DIMocRAT leadership & their cronies with hundreds of needless BOONDOGGLES & SCAMS that helped NOBODY but "the elites"
AND
5. let "the common people"/"the workers" (like my family, for example) KNOW just exactly how little "the rulers" cared about what we "stupid people from flyover country" think/believe/want/care about ===> that was TERMINALLY STUPID on the part of the DIMocRATS "leadership" & FATAL to your party!

otoh, the DIMocRATS "leadership" did one GOOD THING for the USA = they sent "the working classes", a large fraction of the independents, many "rank & file union families" & other "regular folks" into the waiting arms of THE TEA PARTY, where everyone was WARMLY WELCOMED & then promptly "put to work" to defeat the DIMocRATS & ANTI-American LEFTISTS. - for that important & GOOD SERVICE, we TEA PARTIERS thank BHO, Princess Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank & other FOOLS/hypocrites/NITWITS of that ARROGANT sort.

for you DIMocRATS/leftists/nitwits/"do gooders"/wierdos, 11/02/10 is coming in less than 3 weeks & you will be CRYING, MOANING & WHIMPERING because you did NOT listen to moderate to conservative democrats & independents when we said: "NO, NO, NO", repeatedly to BHO, the DIMocRATS in Congress & "the party professionals".
(fyi, my birthday is 11/03 & the USA/i'm getting a NEW & hopefully BETTER responsive CONGRESS as a birthday gift!)

Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats still do not get it and probably never will:

The American people and American small business want lower taxes for EVERYONE while Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats will raise taxes on some and probably everyone to pay for the reckless spending they put in place.

The American people and American small business want smaller government while Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats have and plan to continue to greatly increase the size of government.

The American people and American small business want less government intervention into their lives and private affaires while Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats will continue to expand onerous regulation which raises costs, reduces the standard of living, and inhibits job growth.

The American people and American small business did not want the so-called healthcare reform while Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats continue to ignore how this law will cost the American people and small businesses more, reduce choice in healthcare, and restrict access to healthcare for many people.

The current Administration and current Congress must realize a large portion of the American people are fed up with high taxes, big government, and obtrusive government meddling in the private lives of people, business, and the economy. The American people what lower taxes, lower government spending, and smaller government.

As long as our government continues the reckless spending, high taxes, and unprecedented meddling with businesses, we cannot expect real long term growth.

The Congress and current Administration have put the country on a course of reckless government spending that has mortgaged the future of all Americans especially future generations. The only way to fix this long term structural problem is to create a pro-growth atmosphere for business. To do this we must reduce taxes NOW. How many different taxes does a business or individual pay on a regular basis? We must eliminate number and complexity of all these taxes and reduce the tax burden.

We also need to end the micro-management of business and the economy. Until we GREATLY reduce the tax burden on business and consumers and remove the senseless regulations that accomplish little in relation to the cost they impose, our future is bleak.

REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER...VOTE THEM OUT!!!

========================================

I'm not optimistic. We have a President who has never held a real job before, much less that of a executive.

He's also so damn arrogant that I don't think he would listen to anyone. That's the only way I can answer for his behavior.
