Palin vs. Obama: No she can't [Update]

By Jonathan Capehart

When Barbara Walters asked Sarah Palin if she could beat President Obama in 2012, the half-term governor of Alaska confidently replied, "I believe so." Unfortunately for her, no one else does.

In the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, respondents were asked, if the election for president were held today, for whom would they vote. Obama beat Palin 55 to 33. In fact, the shellacked president beat two other rumored Republican aspirants, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (47-40) and South Dakota Sen. John Thune (47-27).

But back to Mama Grizzly. The WSJ/NBC poll further evidences the negative view the electorate has of Palin. Two years after bursting onto the political scene as Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) 2008 vice presidential running mate (and showing no signs of really ever leaving), only 28 percent have a positive view of her. Just add this to the paltry Palin polls the folks at Pollster.com have been tracking since the fall of 2009. With ratings like that, the only way Palin will get anywhere near the Oval Office is as a guest.

[Update 9:15 a.m.: A new Washington Post-ABC News poll only dims Palin's luster. Among registered voters, "Fully 60 percent say they definitely would not" vote for her for president. And in a head-to-head match-up President Obama beats Palin 53 to 40.]

Palin vs. Obama: Oh, yes, she can; and she will. Sarah Palin was born to rule this nation; not to compromise, seek consensus, or reach-across-the-aisle...but rule!

Obama couldn't carry water to Sarah Palin. She has at least prepared budgets, managed a city, a state and her state's energy commission. Obama, as we are now witness to, has never managed anything.

However, she is too polarizing and therefore probably couldn't beat Obama at the polls. I doubt if our next president will be Palin, Romney, Thune or Obama.

Hopefully either the democrats or republicans will nominate and elect a leader who has experience to govern.

While two years is indeed an eternity in politics, I've seen nothing of Palin that suggests she's learned from past mistakes. Heck, she can't even admit past mistakes. Everything is someone else's fault.

One thing's for certain, assuming she runs, she'll have one heck of a time getting past Super Tuesday. If she thinks Katie Couric is "mean", wait'll she gets a load of Newt, Haley Barbour, and Mike Huckabee on the stump.

That's gonna be more exciting than any farfetched Obama vs Palin matchup.

Palin is in it for the money. The brainless wonder is hot right now with her constituents and is cashing in. The more she talks, the more she reveals her ignorance.

She's the little girl in the puffy net tutu, dancing around a group of admirers. She is so happy to be the center of attraction and so thrilled with herself she hardly knows what to do next. She is gorgeous, rich, admired, can do no wrong with her supporters and probably will be in the spot light for a while to come. There is talk of Americans' native intelligence coming to the rescue when least expected. I think Palin is a shining example of this in action. 30% of Americans will vote for anything or anybody. Who the 30 % is and who or what they will vote for often changes. Palin has her 30%. The rest know better. So let her be. Girls just wanna' have fun.

And until her ignorant supporters realize this, she is going to milk the money cow for all it's worth. Palin has a lot of mouth ... that's it.

It used to be that voters had certain expectations that had to be met before they would vote for the leader of the free world. One was they expected the person with a finger on the nuclear trigger to be resolute. By that standard, resigning halfway through your first term as governor of the (second?) smallest state would be an automatic disqualifier. Americans wouldn't risk electing someone who'd walk out in the middle of the next Cuban Missile Crisis.

Another thing voters used to expect was a grasp of all the big issues and the ability to articulate American values and purpose to the rest of the world. Voters would not have sent an ignorant, inarticulate person to go head to head at a summit with the Soviet president.

I hope voters have not changed all that much from the "good old days" of the Cold War, when America enjoyed great leadership.

What the Palin fan-boys conveniently ignore is that her vaunted executive experience was at the helm of a state that has about the same population as Memphis, Tennessee. I've lived up here for decades and have known about Sarah since she ran for Mayor of Wasilla (which had a population of about 5000 when she was elected.) She did a bad job as governor, alienated her own party, then quit. The ethics investigations, contrary to the RNC mythology, were actually initiated by bi-partisan committees. She has a bad reputation in Alaska and recent polls show that Obama is more popular up here. You "Palinistas" picked a fraudulent champion.

Posted by: anotheractor | December 16, 2010 3:56 PM | Report abuse

In 2012, voters will be looking at Obama's record (he has one now and it will only get worse!) and Palin will seem fresh as a daisy by comparison.

Posted by: tina5 | December 16, 2010 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Electable? No, but running in the Republican primary is part of her business plan. She has enthusiastic supporters and Fox News behind her. Might be enough to pick up sufficient delgates to allow her a role in the GOP convention. The trip to Haiti was a preview -- staged events inside the bubble with extensive coverage from Fox, make promises she'll never have to keep and free from worry of actually having to govern. She can then claim to have shaped the GOP and delivered the goods to the faithful. Looks like a perfect setup for continuation of her public speaking/reality show cash cow. Plus she can keep thumbing her nose at the media.

There are not enough idiots in this country to get Palin elected.

Republicans already had their "fuzzy numbers" president, and look where that got us.

Boy oh boy, Republicans sure love their whackos.

On the next episode of her reality show she should shoot wolves from a helcopter. That would give her a bigger boost than shooting a raindeer.

The media is the reason Sarah thinks the way she does. You've made her Queen of America (fortunately, we have a different system) and she's lapping it up. She won't get nominated to attempt a run at the presidency. This woman is so delusional, she believes her own press. I feel sorry for her children.

Posted by: skinfreak | December 16, 2010 4:23 PM | Report abuse

If Governor Palin chooses to run for President, she's either going to run a good campaign or not.

If Governor Palin is as stupid as her opponemts say, then she won't run a good campaign and she'll lose

Likewise, if President Obama is as great as his supporters allege, then "no worries mate" as Australians say.

Of course, if Governor Palin is smarter than her critics paint her, and if President Obama isn't as great as his supporters claim, then welcome President Palin.

Elections are really a very simple process. The voters decide - not polls, not pundits.

According to Mr. Capeheart, President Obama will lead the pack in 2012. We'll see.

Sitting in the drivers seat of the GOP THIS time will be Sarah Palin (as opposed to when the Religious Right, NRA, and NeoCons took the GOP's car kkey and took the Republican party for a joyride)...

I guess they STILL don't stand for anything and haven't found their "identity" yet.

But WHY is it that every single member of that party is almost literally foaming at the mouth insane?

And why is it allowable that these insane creatures can hold not only public office, but THE highest office in the land?

Palin's not qualified to lead a staff at Burger King, much less be president of the U.S.... Why is it even possible for her to be president?... Don't we value our country anymore?

Palin's husband wants Alaska to break away from the U.S... Does she feel the same way?... Possibly, since she's stated that she follows HIS lead....

What OTHER unAmerican thoughts does she have....

Would Rupert Murdoch actually be president if she, by some miracle got elected?... Possibly.

So, the question remains, why is she even being discussed as a possibility?

Curiouser and curiouser....

“A boss creates fear, a leader confidence. A boss fixes blame, a leader corrects mistakes. A boss knows all, a leader asks questions. A boss makes work drudgery, a leader makes it interesting.” - Russell H. Ewing (1885-1976 British Journalist)

A boss or ruler rules for the sake of ruling. A leader isn't simply interested in having the authority and power, but more so wants to put his/her influence to constructive, helpful use. A leader is sensitive to the people being led. A leader respects those being led and encourages everyone to act with class and style. This is the type of individual who wants to be respected not because of his/her power but because he/she shows consistent respect and expects this reciprocated. I think this quote certainly exemplifies what it means to be a true leader. The irony is that a true leader is greatly loved and appreciated. A ruler or boss with all the power in the world is no match for this type of greatness.

She reminds me of a little kid who tells you that she loves her country with a flourish of patriotic words, but you know that just below the surface that she doesn't have a clue as to what it all means yet. Her daughter Piper and Pres. Obama's daughter Sasha could do just as good of a job.

bubbasouth: "Palin vs. Obama: Oh, yes, she can; and she will."

Not with one third of the country supporting her, she won't.

Maybe you forgot to actually read the article? Off *all* proposed Repub 2012 prez candidates, Palin would be beaten by 22 points, the biggest margin, compared to Romney, who would be within 7 points, the smallest margin.

They'd ALL lose to Obama, who is presumably at his nadir of popularity right now. Shows the lack of quality in the RepubliTea party, with Sarah leading the pack as the most disliked and incompetent of the bunch.

That's a national rejection, Bubba. And right now is the peak of the Tea Party. Can you do the numbers?

Do you *really* think America would elect a bauble-headed quitter as president? One with a Alaskan secessionist as a husband, and a daughter who had a child out of wedlock when she was 16? (Normally that wouldn't matter, but Palin is one of those crazed anti-abortion, anti-birth control anti-sexual education nutjobs. So it matters). Not to mention her "witch finding" spiritual advisor.

Tom Delay, political criminal, would have a better chance of getting elected.

There are loads of big city people that like to get out of the concrete jungle and enjoy the great outdoors. She runs marathons but not thru Central Park but in the freezing cold on sunless days. She identifies with so many people that it is unbelieveable. She is unique, tough as nails,as beautiful and elegant as Jacqueline Kennedy with a gun or waders on taking fish out of a net. She has dealt with the ugliest cyber bullying and vulgar attacks that a civilized society should never been seen or heard saying about anyone and yet she retorts with a wry grin or lets it roll off her back..I admire her greatly and would have been just like Kate Gosselin if I went on a camping trip in Alaska too. She greets a crowd as if they are her family...she looks at an elderly woman with such love and compassion and she is looking at my dearly departed mother. We see her, love her, and trust her. She understands us and where we are. You mess with her and you mess with us....We Americans that the politicians don't remember or care about when they get to Washington, DC. I am someone that has worked at the World Bank, hosted events for mayors and governors, and seen first hand the elitist in DC....certainly not your stereo-typed Sarah Palin supporter...but I am...and you will underestimate this great lady to your chagrin. A former card carrying Mensa member I am smart enough to know that this woman's grasp of what it takes to bring effective and successful change and hope to America is instinctively rooted and grounded in her insightful integrity and honesty. She is painted as someone who just fell off a turnip truck yet she has 20 yrs in political life/yes the population of Alaska is small but she balanced the budget of the 6th wealthiest states in America... and because of her policies Alaska is one of only 4 states NOT IN THE RED. PALIN WINS IN 2012

I totally agree with Lawrence O'Donnell, from MSNBC's The Last Word, who believes that the notorious one from Alaska is only running for billionaire. Thoughtful people recognize her behaviors as strictly self-serving.

to all,

while i do NOT believe that Sarah Palin is SERIOUS about "making a run" for POTUS, whoever the TEA PARTY/GOP runs will HUMILIATE obama in a bloodbath that will make mike dukakas' run look great.

otoh, i do NOT believe that obama will run again, as he can read the handwriting on the wall & it says: HILLERY 2012.

the DIMocRATS party is FINISHED as a "major political party", as they have permanently lost the south, the mountain west, over half of the independents, conservative democrats & the "rank & file" union families (like mine, for example). = there is NO scenario that is a winner for them in the Electoral College
AND
the DIMocRATS will lose the US Senate, too.

IF you are as angry & disgusted with BHO/DIMocRAT "leaders" as our members are with THE MESS that the leftists/DIMocRATS have made of our country, join the TEA PARTY in your county & help us return our nation to small, sane, commonsense & CONSTITUTIONAL government.- you will be warmly welcomed.

Texas Native, you're one reason I left the Tea Party. I found it to be full of people who had only one viewpoint... to berate and insult anyone who was not far-right Republican. Your post, just by its invective, shows how intolerant, mean-spirited, and unpatriotic the TP really is. You have no idea what it's like to be a true American... someone who upholds the rights of all people. You and your hateful group should take a collective deep breath and smell some reality instead of those funny cigarettes you all seem so fond of.

Wow, Parker Rules... quite a bit of rambling there. You sound like you have interesting dreams about Ms Palin. She's as elegant as Jackie Kennedy? Educated? Bright? Astute? Looks like you have fallen hard for the image rather than the reality.

I worked my way through college, too (but I was able to stay in one from start to finish), I raised my kids, too (though none of them got pregnant, gave the verbal finger to America on national TV, or were involved with drugs), learned how to hunt and fish (with my finger OFF the trigger while walking around), served in the armed forces (where I learned what patriotism really means), ran my own business (without any debt), and was smart enough to be valedictorian. But would you vote for me? I damn well hope not. I'm at least smart enough to know that I'd make a lousy president. Queen Sarah has no such insight.

We sorely lack real leadership today, and Sarah Palin is no exception to this statement. She came on the scene with an apparent passion and a surface-level refreshing (yet narrow) set of views. As we came to know her just a bit more, we realized that she, like so many other would-be leaders, has no substance. The problems that face this nation and the world are in great need of long-term, rational and educated visions. Here is to hoping that Palin is simply a flash in the pan.

bubbagumm,

the frank TRUTH is that i do NOT believe that you were EVER a TEA PARTIER. - instead i believe that you are DISHONEST & a DIMocRAT extremist, as otherwise you would NOT post the arrogantly STUPID, ignorant, hate-FILLED & anti-TP nonsense that you spew out onto this forum.

THE TRUTH is that well over HALF of TEA PARTIERS are NOT Republicans & NEVER have been. - instead we are former Independents & Conservative Democrats, who have NO use for Princess Pelosi, Harry Reid, Olympia Snowe, Chuckie Schumer and any number of other ELITIST/LEFTIST idiots & free-spending nitwits.
(many of us former Democrats permanently LEFT the party, after we figured out that there was NO PLACE in todays DIM party for anyone who is NOT a lunatic, America-HATING, arrogant, extremist member of "the smart set", who sees themselves as "our betters" & who want to "rule over the common people".)

fyi, we will remain TEA PARTY PATRIOTS and will take out the DIMocRATS in 2012/2014/2016/forever, as we simply don't trust the likes of BHO, his henchmen & the DIMocRAT "leaders" with our FREEDOM.= we just want ALL of the LEFTISTS gone from government at every level.

laughing AT you!

Palin is as qualified as our 100 day senator/3rd world pres. It's unfortunate that the rep party didn't give her the support needed for national election. At least she had some experiende administrating a state government rather that sitting in the elites senate with there over blowing retirement and Cadillac medical programs. Palin has more administrative experience that most national elected drones.

Palin's Title "1/2 term governor" Says it all. When the ?'s got too tuff about the bridge to nowhere, getting false building permits for her "lair", lying about her house guests, and on and on she quit.

So if we face war with a another country (that she doesn't know exists) will she just pout and go back to her Barbie house and play. Is this really the person 40% of America wants to lead this country.

She could probably win an election in Argentina, after all Eva Peron was a prostitute. Why not a ditzy beauty queen. Talk about lipstick on a pig!!!
