DADT repeal almost DOA? [Update]

By Jonathan Capehart

Yesterday's non-stop action on the efforts to vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the repeal of don't ask don't tell (DADT) may very well be the high point. For, today, everything could come to a crashing halt. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just said on the floor, "I'll make that decision on this next little bit." That being a vote today on the NDAA.

The insistence of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) that a vote on the Bush tax cuts deal go first might seem like obstruction. But without that vote, Collins won't be able to bring along other pro-DADT-repeal Republicans, such as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) or Scott Brown (Mass.). In short, gay men and lesbians serving in silence in the military may have to wait for the courts to liberate them.

The president of the United States wants DADT repealed. So do the secretary of defense, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the House of Representatives, the American people and even former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), who led the effort to put the noxious law on the books in the first place. And yet there seems to be no will to end it.

Fred Sainz, spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, issued a statement earlier today that sums up my feeling. "If senators move forward with a vote on NDAA before a deal has been solidified, the vote will fail and all key players will share the responsibility."

[Update 12:25 p.m.: During Reid's speech on the floor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) said that the tax bill could be done "in the next hour or so." If that is indeed true it will be awfully hard for Reid to advance NDAA to a certain failure. At least it should be.]

U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton's ruling in the case of Air Force Major Margaret Witt is more likely what you will eventually see, if left up to the Courts, rather than U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips' ruling in the Log Cabin Republicans case. Look no farther than the makeup of the SCOTUS and tell me that they are going to give the LGBT community exactly what they want...

That is quite an empty threat, from where I am standing, and is prefered by many others...

Mr Capehart; all,

to Mr. Capehart: WHEN are you LEFTIST nitwits & "progressive" DIMocRATS going to figure out that NONE of the American servicemembers (except of course the "hidden homosexuals" that are currently serving) do NOT want "open service" by homosexuals or OPEN homosexual BEHAVIOR in the armed services, now or ever?
(frankly, 99% of normal people, despite what they may say to "news people", do NOT approve of homosexual behavior & regard such practices as perverse.)

surely, you aren't that ignorant and/or brain-DEAD, so could it be that your true INTENT is to destroy the combat effectiveness, unit cohesion & morale of the armed services, in time of two wars?

to all: fear not gentle readers, in Jan of this coming year this STUPIDITY will be ended by the HoR, which will be solidly in conservative hands.- further, this "majoring on" DADT (and on any number of other STUPID ideas) is one of the reasons that the DIMocRATS party is headed for political oblivion in 2012 & in the elctions to follow, as the American people no longer trust the DIMocRATS, "progesssives" & other extremist fools with the well-being of the USA and/or their FREEDOM.

IF you are as disgusted, as our members are, with the horrid mess that BHO & the other DIMocRAT extremists have made of our country over the last few years, come join the TEA PARTY & help us return our nation to a small, sane, commonsense & CONSTITUTIONAL goverment.
you will be warmly welcomed & "put to work" to help us destroy the statist/elitist/lunatic left.

I thought the tax bill had to originate in the House (per the Constitution). The Dem Caucus says no vote as is.

This has probably killed it:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2010/12/09/131933043/house-democrats-refuse-to-take-up-tax-cut-deal

Sorry, Dude, but Pelosi thinks she is smarter than you. To bad if she is wrong, you pay the price, not her...

kitchendragon50,

Correct, it does! And Pelosi says "not on MY watch!" and kills it, and very likely, all other legislation tied up in the Senate.

She also killed trying to extend Unemployment. When Obama threatened that this move she is making may not be good for the Economy, the Democrats who still have their seats had better hope those words from him do not prove to be prophetic -- that could be a death knell for them in 2012, and he would have spelled it out!

And from CNN:

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/12/09/tax.plan/

Their analysis is scathing of the Democrats in the House, and make no mistake, the Repeal of DADT is on the line!

If you really want DADT repealed, FLOOD those Representatives with calls like they have never seen before, otherwise, kiss your butt goodbye on this one...

Your only hope will be that the Repubicans in the Senate could dangle this with *less* promises next session...

texasnative46,

The military is not a democratic system. Equality should be for all and not exempt in certain situations.

Homophobia is the only reason people want this legislation to remain in affect. Why should a soldier be able to keep a picture of his wife in his pocket and another soldier not be able to keep a picture of his husband?

It's also humorous that you are so homophobic; because your views seem to be made while your head is up your rear end.

pathfinder12; all,

inasmuch as "homophobia" is a STUPID, completely/knowingly FALSE & "made-up out of whole cloth" construct, you have just made yourself look even more FOOLISH than most of the arrogantly ignorant "progressives"/DIMocRAT extremists/LEFTISTS are. = "homophobia" is, as a psychological theory, simply a STUPID notion for something that does NOT exist "in the real world".

you are 100% correct however about the military service not being "a democratic system". = your wishful thinking & FOOLISH personal opinion aside, the UCMJ & the MCM punish homosexual BEHAVIOR as a serious felony because such CONDUCT is "prejudicial to good order & discipline within the forces".
i strongly suspect that homosexual BEHAVIOR will continue to be punished as a sexual PERVERSION, regardless of what the "homosexual lobby", the DIMocRAT lunatic extremists and/or BHO wants/thinks/wishes.

fyi, NOBODY cares what anyone carries in their wallet. - otoh, we members/former members of the armed services DO care about public displays of sexual perversion, public indecency & serious violations of the UCMJ.

further, unless you have served/are serving in the US armed forces, you have NO business even having an opinion, as you "know NOT & know NOT that you know NOT".
all your post to me has accomplished is to announce your ignorance of the FACTS, for every reader to see.
(my guess is that, like most of the "pro-open homosexual service" nitwits, you have neither served in the armed forces nor do you ever plan to serve.)

to all: fyi, i have, this afternoon, received six e-mails from "open service proponents". - five of the six were filled with obscenities, racist slurs, graphic descriptions of sodomy, hate-FILLED ignorance of the facts of military service & other expressions of utter nonsense/wishful thinking.
this sort of bigotry/filthiness of speech & thought is all too typical of the leftist/extremist lunatics, who want "open homosexual behavior" in the US armed forces. =====> such people make most normal people GAG!

Why are gays trying to force us to recognize exactly which one of them likes to take it in the a.s.s.?

I really DON'T want to know.

Pleeze! Keep your sexual preferences to yourselves, all of you!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Actually, you make my point when you go on about who is homophobic, etc.

When try to change the sexual makeup that God has created, you become so confused you start calling normal people names because we don’t want or need to know what people are doing in the bedrooms.

Will you next create a group of toe lickers and then force us know exactly each person who fits that group too?

Keep your business to yourself, and we’ll all be happy.

pathfinder12; lindalovejones; all,

to "pathfinder12": see, not only conservatives are OPPOSED to homosexual BEHAVIOR in the armed forces. - fyi, "linda" (well-known on "PP" to be "considerably left of center") & i agree on little else except this one issue.= it is obvious that, since you have few or NO normal people that agree with you on the left/center/right, your opinion is the LUNATIC EXTEMIST, UNfounded, personal opinion which is SILLY & NOT "based in fact".

to "lindalovejones": WELL SAID!

to all: IF you are as disgusted as our members are about the MESS that BHO, Princess Pelosi, Harry Reid, the LEFTISTS, statists, DIMocRAT EXTREMISTS & other FOOLS/bigots/airheads have made of our nation over the last few years, come join your local TEA PARTY group & help us return our representative republic to sanity, commonsense & to LIBERTY.
you will be warmly welcomed & "put to work" to help us return our nation to CONSTITUTIONAL government.
