DADT repeal: victory! [Update]

By Jonathan Capehart

[Update 3:30 p.m.: "Don't ask, don't tell," the discriminatory ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military, has been officially repealed by a vote of 65 to 31 in the Senate. History made. Justice done. A promise kept.]

At 11:49 a.m., the United States Senate voted 63-33 to to end debate on the repeal "don't ask, don't tell," the discriminatory ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military. The final vote (only 51 votes needed for passage) is expected to take place at 3 p.m. today, but there is no doubt this is already a victory. A victory for the Pentagon, which needs every able and valiant body to serve and protect this nation and its interests. A victory for the American people, who once again have shown the capacity to right a grievous wrong that ran counter to their fundamental sense of fairness. More importantly, this is a victory for servicemembers serving in silence.

With just two sentences in the State of the Union speech last January, President Obama set the wheels in motion for today's historic vote. No, the path to this day was not perfect. Many doubted the president's commitment to get this done. Some even accused him of paying lip service to the gay community at best, and playing it for a fool at worst. Today's vote should put that nonsense to rest.

Still, those who insisted on holding Obama's feet to the fire must share equally in the praise for today's landmark vote. Their work in getting wavering members of Congress to see the importance of ending discrimination while also bolstering our national security was invaluable. And just as invaluable was the leadership shown by Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.) and Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who worked hard to get their colleagues to catch up with the American people. And while I have taken Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to task for his sometimes bumbling attempts to bring this measure to a vote, I tip my hat to him for getting the job done.

Now, remember, today's vote does not mean the immediate end to "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT). Assuming final passage this weekend, it means that the orderly process devised by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will govern the transition away from enforcement of DADT. Before gay men and lesbians can truly serve openly in the armed forces, Obama, Gates and Mullen must officially certify that the process of repealing DADT will not harm recruitment, retention and readiness, and that the Pentagon has readied the regulations and policies needed to transition to a post-DADT military. Then, 60 days later, the repeal will be complete.

Yesterday, I wrote, "[T]he men and women who put on the uniform to protect and defend the United States -- gay or straight -- do so for the same reason: love of country. So, let them serve with dignity and honor. Let them serve openly." Mission accomplished.

Who cares. Let's get this irrelevant bill signed and get on to the matters that Americans care about.

This is issue is relevant to Capehart, Maddow and three other people. What a waste of energy on the Democrats' part.

Yes, lets gets this "irrelevant" bill passed and get on with other more importasnt work such as finally getting rid of old man McCain and finding a new leader for the Marine Corps.

TN46, I don't know by what right you claim to be able to speak for that swath of people you so mention, but I'm not going to call you on it. However, I'd be interested to hear comments by other individuals as well.

and Bobmoses, this is, or ought to be, of concern to plenty of Americans- not only those discharged by the policy but those civilians seeking work who've suddenly found themselves in competition with those discharged. If many return to the military, it will leave more jobs open for civilians.

MR. Capehart, we have a half hour until the final vote-less- but it might be wiser to hold our cheers until after the final blow is struck, lest we become complacent and fail to exert the energy needed to do so.

"PLEASE tell me how the DIMocRATS will survive as a national party."

The same way as in 2006. After two years of a Republican House of Representatives being unable to find its butt with both hands, the voters are going to have yet another change of heart.

You see, the only card the Republicans ever had to play was to borrow money from the Chinese and spend it on wars and tax cuts for the rich. The rest of their platform is only culture wars frou frou and the usual hapless attempts to return to 1933.

No screaming and yelling please, I'm voting third party in 2012. I've had it with the two party system.

No one has yet to define --- and you certainly have made no effort to, Mr. Manbag --- what it means to "serve openly" as a gay or lesbian.

I have a hunch we're going to find out. Mr. Gates, you brought this on yourself, so make room on your calendar for lawyers, activists, and all manner of whiners who will INSURE gays and lesbians are afforded their "rights," look for the quotas for promotion boards (will the personnel systems identify people as gay? How else can you insure the "right" number are promoted?) Let the fun begin.

"This is issue is relevant to Capehart, Maddow and three other people."

DADT was deaders already, in the courts. This vote merely means that the DoD will be waving the baton, not some Federal judge. This is definitely relevant to our armed forces, and all that depends on them.

I was going to say that you give the President too much credit (yes, two lines in the State of the Union Address, and then no attempt to address it, even instructing the Justice Department to appeal the decision in the Log Cabin suit), but with the vitriol that's being spewed by the bigoted -- I mean Tea Party -- commentators, that would be piling on. Finally, this administration takes a REAL step toward full equality. Scoreboard, righties.

Discriminatory ban? That alone says you never served with gays and believe me they don't have to go around telling anyone their gay. It's well known. Every had a friend injured or killed because a gay started yelling and screaming or just started running like a chicken with it's head cut off. Of course you haven't. You just want to be PC. Every heard a gay crying uncontrollably next to you pissing in their pants. Of course you haven't. You just want to be PC. Every heard a gay talk about walking over to the enemy and telling them that this is not their war because the enemies of the straight people are not the enemies of the gays. Of course you haven't. You just want to be PC. You haven't a clue in the world what your talking about. PC puppet.

You crack me up. Really. You sound like a lil sissy yourself.

I put on a uniform every day. I saw just as many "real" men pee their pants and cry like babies.

But you probably thought they were gay. No- they were just like you. Scared and stupid.

Finally, America, the one true bastion of freedom, liberty and justice on this planet for all has lived up to its name. Was it that difficult to end the process of denying equal rights to gay Americans who believe in this country so much they are willing to sacrifice their lives and limbs to protect it?

Equality in America means equal rights for everyone, irregardless of the color of your skin, the God you believe in, or your sexual orientation. If we had adhered to the policy of equal rights for only some of our citizens it would have meant equal rights for none of our citizens.

History sells papers. If you think this is bad, wait until we get to the repeal of DOMA. Oppressing folks just gets them more press in the long run. Fair and equal treatment, by contrast, is completely un-newsworthy.

When Clinton tried to legalize their status in 1992, the wrath of God descended upon the United States with a massive flood that turned the Mississippi River basin into another one of the Great Lakes. The waters started to recede only after Clinton backed off and DADT was adopted.

What will be America's fate this time, with the actual inclusion of open sodomites in the US military?

Guess we haven't had enough of national bankruptcy, double-digit unemployment, hurricanes that destroy whole cities and even regions, idiot presidents in each party, terrorism and endless wars.

Sigh.

We'll just have to have even more.

We never learn, do we?

I Personally would like to thank my new hero Louis Gohmert. WIthout your pitiful little display of total insanity, there was a chance that DADT would not be repealed.

Then you went on national TV and ranted about how Gays in the Military would bring down America.

What Mr.Gohmert will soon realize is above all, AMERICANS HATE PEOPLE WHO EXAGGERATE and AMERICANS WHO LOOK TO VILLAINIZE a group of citizens for political purposes.

You sir we so out of line, that you caused the American Public to sit back and think--- DOES THIS IDJIT REALLY THINK THAT A FEW GAYS IN THE MILITARY CAN BRING DOWN A GREAT NATION???? Who the f does he think he is? Are we as a country that hateful?? Is this the type of words and behavior I want my elected official to display.

In the long run, Americans are all about fairness and opportunity for all. They despise hate and hateful words. They are perfectly capable of making well-informed rational decisions about what is best for their country.

You sir, it has been decided are not good for the country.

Bye Bye Hater. Time to pack your narrow-minded little head and go to a country where your feelbe little mind could be appreciated -- like Iran. We know they have no Gay people.

Some service members come out of a closet.

Other service members find they will have to build and enter their own personal, dark closet. We'll see how they fare.

Here and elsewhere in civilian society, the yahoos go about life in a pretend world of self-importance.

Congress did the right thing today and lead the nation. Some 'citizens' just can't cope with that.

Homophobia is intolerance which brings no benefit. The Senate has done the correct thing by passing the bill which will advance the repeal of the intolerant 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'. President Obama and the Pentagon will sign for the implementation of repeal against 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'. Although I didn't have confidence in Harry Reid in getting the Senate to work past December 17, he "manned" in helping the military to advance tolerance in the military. Sexual orientation and gender identity don't determine military capability and don't determine good character.

Please know that I stand with you in your staunch belief that homosexuality is an abomination, and that the ideal society has at its core a government built out of millenia-old religious doctrine.

At this time I would like to urge you to consider moving to Iran. Here we have no gays, the women know their place, and religion is central to our law. You will find it a reasonable stand-in for the conservative utopia that you have felt slipping through your hands with every step that this unholy march of Freedom and Equality makes in your land.

Thank you and Allah al akbar. May God the merciful sustain you during this time of grief.

The end of DADT will be handled with the same professionalism that distinguishes our Armed Forces in war or peace.

DaMan2-if you really think service members will leave in droves, I am sorry that you so underestimate our love of this country.

BloggersvilleUSA-your flood rambling is as much nonsense as saying that Katrina was God's punishment for Bush allowing the insurgency to grow in Iraq.

Houstonian-I have not the foggiest idea where you served, if anywhere. During my career I have served with a Special Forces team sergeant who'd earned the Silver Star and a Ranger First Sergeant who had two Combat Infantry Badges and three Purple Hearts. Both were gay and neither ever flinched in the face of the enemy.

Curmudgeon10-serving openly means serving without fear. It means not worrying about being kicked out because someone intercepted a private e-mail to a loved one. It means being able to have a loved one wait at the airstrip when coming home from the war just like other Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who have their wives and children waiting for them. It does not mean replacing the American flag on the uniform with a rainbow one. I refer you back to the aforementioned professionalism of our men and women in uniform. The idea of quotas for promotion boards is ludicrous. We are not going to have a little box where you place a check mark in heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual in official records. But, if God forbid, some idiot creates a quota system instead of looking for outstanding accomplishment of duties... please rest assured that I will argue hard that SECDEF develop a quota for narrow minded bigots so folks like you have a chance too. Because that is what we do in the military: we fight for freedom and justice and equality for all Americans regardless of how much we agree or disagree with their opinions.

Thank you to all who have the courage to serve in our military. We already know you love America. It's time to let you love the people you want.

The official sanctioning of open homosexuality by Obama and his 'crats will not please anyone but homosexuals and their, leftist sympathizers. This will be Obama's #1 legacy and it will be a sour one. This will help make Obama a one term president.

Especially since the Obamacrats let the Dream Act die on the vine in favor of homosexuals. Hispanics are enraged and disgusted. Many will stay home in 2012 or maybe even vote Republican.

Clinton was very wise to abandon the homosexual agenda back in the 1990s.

He didn't want to be another Carter.

After 18 years, I believe Australia is still in existence.

After 17 years, I believe Israel is still in existence.

How many years must elapse until they fail?

Oh, and then there's Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, etc., etc. In other words, most of NATO. NATO will fail because of who?

What I would like to know, are the liberal campuses ike Columbia or Yale and the rest (OK, all of 'em) going to end their efforts at banning ROTC and recruitment on college campuses? After all, the main rationale for their opposition has been removed.

That might be an interesting one to watch.

How many patriotic gays have already died or been mutilated in wars for America, since Valley forge till now? How many Gays refused to fire in battle in case they killed another Gay, how many wealthy parents payed for their children not to fight for their country, My father had a saying"It is not the size of the tent it is the size of the show inside" meaning its not the size of the man,it is his size of his heart and his bravery.
I believe every person who wants to be called a patriot must sign up to fight for their country in some way not always physical often verbal, remember a person can damage a countries moral by a derogatory comment and most of these comments are based on problems the individual has brought upon themselves by their own lifestyles.
I would like to see prisoners inducted into some army areas, But it is ok to be gay in prison America, dont ask dont tell for prisoners???

DADT repeal: victory! [Update]
By Jonathan Capehart

Lends new meaning to the the words update, and post partisan. How are you qualified to make the judgement what is discrimination and what is not? Why don't you spend a little more time worrying about what just happened in the defiled Halls of Law and Justice on the Hill above 1600 Tent City Ave., instead of what is going on with 'Me Tarzan, You Tarzan'?

We (80,000,000+ of US of America), no better off, worse, or in complete crisis, along with the 40,000,000 professional, poor soul\victims of illiberalism in inaction, who just got another hole punched in our tin cup, a 2% lump of coal dropped in OUR Chris'mas stocking, a Kiss then Tell Army, another Raid on the Social Security Insecure, Empty Lockbox, and a patchwork of ever more complicated tax breaks for some, and the promise of more uncertainty out into the next two years.

When we needed a glass at least half full, these turkeys in tuxedos, and unfortunately, transparent speedos, bring out a pile of paper with more holes in it than a Poacher Police Deer Decoy. If not then, why now? If 2% is good, and will improve the Job situation, why didn't he do that on day one? If 2% is good now, why not 100%? If not now, when? If the top 1%-2% of the earners in this country spend 30% of the money, why does he (The President, and you in the press) still insist that the Republicans are holding the Un-Employed hostage, thus preventing him from taking at least half of that 30% away? Do you have any idea how oxymoronic that situation is?

We say there is too much toleratin' goin' on up there, enough insensitivity, discrimination, and apathy to fill the whole East and West coast.

How about some in depth reporting and OpEdin' goin' on about that, huh Jonathan?

to ALL,

there is NO such thing as "homophobia", except in the twisted minds of "the anything goes" set.
(frankly, i believe that even the people who say that FICTIONAL/DISHONEST word are mostly too smart to believe it. instead, they hope that other people, i.e., their supposed "inferiors", will be cowed by its use. otoh, IF you are DUMB enough to buy into that foolishness, i PITY you.)

NORMAL people may tolerate your peversions but they will NOT truly accept you. FACT.

as i said earlier, we TEA PARTIERS will use the "YES" votes, of the LEFTISTS/ELITISTS in Congress, as just one more hammer to beat "the rulers" over the head with in 2012.

Wow re:comments.

What a staggering amount of hatred and fear of difference in here.

The repeal of DADT is not the beginning of the end, nor should it be a momentous occasion (though it is in some sense)--it is the correction of a disgusting and shameful mistake that will be frowned upon by history.

Little or no credit is given in Mr. Capehart's writing or in the comments to the clarity of particular military leaders who had the courage to ignore all the rhetoric and do their job--analyze the issue on the basis of military effectiveness and nothing else. Social justice may be served by this event--and may have motivated Pres. Obama in raising the issue last January--but it had nothing to do with engendering the support of crucial military leaders without whose support this bill dies rather than passes.

Now that this earth-shattering thing has occurred, can you find another note on your piano? Seriously, most of us DON'T CARE.

First they would not let blacks serve; they said they were cowardly. Then women could not serve and finally gays. Blacks and women serve with honor and the services run smoothly. The open addition of gays into the services will be the same. Do people actually believe that gays, women and blacks cannot keep their private lives out of their job performance/

Our Constitution guarantees that all are created equal. DADT makes some citizens more equal than others. The practice was a travesty of justice and human rights.

I see the gay bashers are out in force. And I'm sure the loudest, most bigoted voices are from those too cowardly to wear their country's uniform.

I served, and it didn't matter to me if someone was gay (plenty were, they just stayed in the closet) as long as they did their job and served honorably.

SO EACH CONGRESS PERSON WHO VOTED TO ALLOW OPEN HOMOSEXUALS IN OUR ELITE MILITARY, AND CLAIMS TO HAVE ANY SORT OF A MORAL AND RELIGIOUS FOUNDATION, THROWS OUT THEIR BELIEF IN GOD AND HIS LAWS WHICH WERE THE BASICS OF OUR FOUNDING!

WE NOW HAVE TO FIGHT EVERY ANTI-GOD LIBERAL TO PROTECT OUR INNOCENT PREBORNS FROM A HORRIBLE DEATH-AS THEY BECOME INCONVENIENT TO THEIR POTENTIAL MOTHER!

WE HAVE TO FIGHT THE JUDICIAL FIATS OF JUDGES THAT ATTEMPT TO FORCE OUR TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE SOCIETY TO ACCEPT SAME-GENDER MARRIAGE AND THE BENEFITS INVOLVED!

AND NOW- A HOMOSEXUAL WHO MAKES THE VERY FALSE CLAIM THAT "THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION" WAS CREATED IN THEM BY "NATURE" -RECEIVES LEGITIMACY !

OUR CHILDREN WILL BE TAUGHT THAT TWO MOMS OR DADS ARE EQUAL TO MALE AND FEMALE PARENTS! THAT THE SEXUAL ACTS OF GAYS ARE PERFECTLY SAFE AND HONORABLE, AND ANYONE WHO EXPRESSES DISAGREEMENT OR CITES HOLY SCRIPTURE WILL BE EXCORIATED AND CALLED HATEFUL BIGOTS!

AMERICA, THANKS TO THE "PROGRESSIVE" LEFTISTS AND HUMANISTS, IS TRULY RAPIDLY DECLINING! I WILL PRAY FOR GOD TO SAVE US-AS HE WILL CERTAINLY NOT BLESS AMERICANS WHO CONTINUALLY BREAK HIS COMMANDMENTS!

Could say that "GOD-phobia" lifted its head above GOD'S Rights in all this. Mere mortals exalting themselves above what Supernatural GOD set up, has always been around. Adam and Eve did it, thru GOD-given "freedom to choose", but when you read on, they were not in charge of the consequences. All of mankind was locked into eternal separation from GOD, thru the 1st Adam's choice. GOD HIMSELF prophesied that HE would bring "another Adam" (the last Adam--1 Cor. 15:45) to break this curse of separation from GOD. 1st prophecy of Christ, to come, seen in Genesis 3:15, where GOD spoke of "seed of woman",(virgin birth) instead of natural "seed of man". The 1st Adam failed to resist satan, and brought mankind into eternal separation from GOD. The Last Adam (Jesus) did not fail to resist satan (Matthew 4), and lovingly presented mankind with free-will opportunity to come back into eternal agreement with GOD again, and not be locked eternal separation from GOD. The 1st Adam failed; the last Adam (Christ) was victorious over sin, death (physical/spiritual), and satan. If we find ourselves in hell, it was our "choice" that put us there, for GOD will give us what we choose; to be with HIM, or separated.

The task is not completed. I have not seen any discussion by either Congress or the military of the changes that may have to be made to accommodate the new "GAY IS OK" policy. The military has provided for separate toilet/bathing facilities for men and women. Perhaps the reason was the potential for sexual arousal and activity. In view of the new policy, it would be appropriate to provide separate toilet/bath facilities for gay men and lesbians. However, each of those categories involve the same potential hazards that combined toilet/bath facilities would have for straight men and women. And so, it appears that there needs to be a distinction made within the gay and lesbian categories similar to the distinction of men and women within the straight category, and separate toilet/bath facilities need to be provided accordingly. Accordingly, at least six types of toilet/bath facilities would be required. Since the traditional door symbols to indicate the designated toilet/bath users would no longer be appropriate, new symbols would have to be designed and put into use. This might be an appropriate use of stimulus funds. And, Congress and the military have yet to address the important matter of tranvestites, and their right to choose to dress in masculine or feminine uniforms. The work has just begun.

MidwaySailor76; friar1944;all,

to "MS76": fyi, i retired from the Army, so you can save your DUMB-bunny comments, on that subject, for others here.
otoh, the VAST majority of "pro-homosexual rights" cretins NEVER served in the forces & are "stay safe at home" type people. further, all too many of "the homosexual rights advocates" HATE the military services & America, too.

to "friar1944": as a "person of color", i.e., "bi-racial", i am DISGUSTED/APPALLED that ANYONE (at least those who have an IQ greater than their shoe size) would equate homosexual BEHAVIOR with "race & ethnicity".
(nobody can change the color of their skin but BEHAVIOR can be/is often changed.)
the plain facts are that i believe that anyone who would try to compare sexual perversion to "race" is STUPID and/or LYING.

to all: IF you are as disgusted, as our members are with the antics of the leftists/DIMocRATS/extremist lunatics that are currently "running our country into the ground", join THE TEA PARTY & help us return our nation to being a sane, commonsense & free CONSTITUTIONAL republic.

Hey JC.....ok, looks like you can enlist now. Going marines or navy?

Please report on the coming " military gay surge " in 2011 enlisting #'s!

OMG....how long did it take to flip this " Bill Clinton policy " you didn't like? DADT wouldn't have passed without GOP support. They get a shout out?

Lots and lots of ink about repeal of DADT.

Not so much on the defeat of the DREAM Amnesty for illegal aliens.

DADT affects about 0.000001% of the population.

DREAM would have amnestied 2+ million illegal aliens, and over the years let them bring in 20 million more legal immigrants.

All in all, it was a good weekend for patriots.

TN46, you posted a month ago, "otoh, the end of DADT won't happen anytime soon (IF EVER!) as the Commander-in-Chief, BHO, has NO GUTS & is INCAPABLE of doing anything that MIGHT cost any DIMocRAT to lose even one vote. ... my guess is that you & your like-minded members of the 'gay-friendly group' will just have to wait for all of us 'old folks' to die to, perhaps, get what you want."

TN46, I am pleased to report you were wrong. Even though you are quite nasty with your invective, I respect you enough not to rub it in your face. Besides, this is a time to celebrate, not castigate.

Whenever America rights a wrong, America is reborn. Happy birthday America.

We should vote out all congressmen and senators that voted to repeal dadt.I believe the figures that 66% of the people of the U S was in favor of repeal is a crock. If any gays to enlist and pass the tests to serve that many won't last basic training for many reasons .

tttvance,

YEP. i was wrong about DADT being passed
(i grossly underestimated the arrogant STUPIDITY of the DIMocRATS in the Congress.- this ONE vote will cost MANY a DIMocRAT his/her job in 2012. = we TEA PARTIERS will NEVER let the voters forget that the DIMocRATS/LIBs kow-towed to "the gay lobby" & thereby severely damaged the armed services, in wartime.)
BUT
NOT at all wrong about the loudmouthed, corrupt, ignorant, SELF-impressed, little weakling that currently resides in the WH. ====> BHO will sell anybody/YOU out for personal advantage.- count on it, as he cares for NOBODY/NOTHING except himself & his few friends in "the inner circle".
(in case you don't know, BHO is a committed "homophobe" AND "well-known in Chicago" as an antisemite, so signing this law will NOT be "a matter of conscience" for him.)

joecarol, if gay men and women couldn't pass the Armed Services exams and basic training, then there wouldn't have been thousands in the military who were separated under DADT. That's not even counting the many thousands more who are still in the Armed Forces serving their country and obviously passed their exams/training.

So, which is it, sir? Are you considering yourself a part of the "anything goes" set? For how else could you characterize POTUS as a committed homophobe?

A key requirement for having an intelligent debate is to at least provide some intelligence and consistency in your arguments.

TN46,

Others will have to decide whether they wish to be associated with the Tea Party that includes people like you who writes what you write.

While most Tea Partiers are not as outwardly hateful and vociferous as you, my guess is-- when hearing from the likes of Sarah Palin, Fox News, conservative talk radio, and even friends and family-- you speak what is in the heart of a good many Tea Partiers. It must be exhausting to hate so passionately.

I think it is sad that most miss the point. There will always be more people discussed with homosexual BEHAVIOR than those who practice it, and those that do so desperately need this forced affirmation from all of us. The military is a Total Institution. For those non-collage grads that means that those in it are The Property of the United States Government and as such even their right to free speech and assembly is controlled by Military policy. Once again the majority is subjugated by a very well funded minority.
