More signs Sarah Palin isn't running? [Update]

By Jonathan Capehart

So, I was catching up on my reading yesterday, when two stories on the Politico website leapt out at me as possibly more signs that Sarah Palin won't run for president in 2012.

Sign 1: Tom Van Flein, described as one of "Palin's most-trusted advisers," is ditching her for incoming Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.). As we learned from Robert Draper's New York Times magazine profile of Palin, Van Flein is one of Palin's four lieutenants. He also "contributes research to some of Palin's Facebook posts and speeches." If she's planning a run for prez, why on earth would she let him go?

Sign 2: "Murmurs of 'Alaska' Season 2" is the headline further down Politico's homepage. Politico cites Rob Shuter of popeater.com, who reported:

Sarah, who is reportedly making more than $250,000 per episode for the eight-week series, is no fool -- when the show debuted to over 4.96 million viewers, insiders tell me she started talking about a new deal right away.

"Sarah knows to strike when the iron is hot and started talking about season two right after the show debuted to huge numbers," a friend of Palin tells me. "She knows that celebrities get millions of dollar for each episode of their shows and thinks she's worth it too. Jennifer Aniston took home millions from 'Friends' and in Sarah's eyes, she's no different."

Why on earth would she turn her back on a huge payday like that to suffer the indignity -- not to mention the scrutiny and accountability -- involved in running for the most powerful office on the planet?

[Update 3:50 p.m.: The very same Tom Van Flein discussed above emailed me about this post. Not about "Sign No. 1," but about "Sign No. 2." Here's what he had to say:

Mr. Capehart--just so you know, the Popeater story about a second season was a complete fabrication. Palin's team does not speak anonymously like that. If you see a "report" that is citing "Palin insiders" or "close friends of the Palins" 95% of the time it is fiction. Maybe even 99% of the time."

Duly noted.]

Of course she's not running. But if she says that, she instantly becomes about as interesting (and bankable) as stale bread.
She is in this for the $$$$$$$$$ -- and to be popular. Just like the Mean Girl you know she was in high school.

She probably is running, not because she's really interested in or remotely capable of the job. But because she's a front for the billionaire's who own the Republican Party as an agency of wealth transfer to themselves. This dim woman doesn't know why or how the Korean peninsula is divided and refuses to study up on such matters. But she "wrote" an editorial for the Wall Street Journal that critiqued the Federal Reserve's very esoteric policy called "quantitative easing?!?!" Give me a break!

Oh I so wish she would run! That's a sure way to ensure a Dem victory. Go for it Sarah!

Look on the bright side Libs... there may not be a country in 2 years thanks to your community organizer trying to fill the shoes of a president. Capey mentions the accountability of the office, but let's just blame everything on the last president, now that's true accountability, right? The sad thing is that if you follow the Obama path we'll be bankrupt and foreclosed upon by the Peoples Republic of China... my oh my, I am anxious to see your ACLU buddies go up against a totalitarian regime... hows that for hope and change... you all are just foolish enough to be dangerous

Mr. Capehart,

pardon me, but when are you & the rest of "the BHO-worshipers" & "mavins of the main-SLIME press" going to actually "get the message"?

we members of THE TEA PARTY have been telling all of you, for at least SIX MONTHS, that Sarah Palin has NO intention whatever of making a run for the POTUS. period. end of story.

i find it therefore "just a bit odd" that anyone, who is a columnist for "the washington COMpost", has NOT figured out that simple truth. - could it be that you had "several inches to fill" on the editorial page & could think of nothing important/interesting to write about?

otoh, Sarah Palin is one of the obsessions of "the brain-DEAD left" & i therefore hope that the DIMocRATS will expend vast amounts of time, energy & money "running against" someone who is NOT running.

by the time that we TEA PARTIERS decide (and it will be the TEA PARTY that "picks" the 2012 GOP candidate.) who IS running against the DIMocRAT in 2012 (i am NOT at all convinced that BHO will make another run OR that he could win the DIMs nomination if he does.), the extremist DIMocRATS will have blown their chance to keep the WH.
(frankly, i do NOT think that by 2012, given their foolishness, mean-spiritedness, arrogant, ignorance of the facts & open contempt for beliefs of "the average American" that ANY of the DIMocRAT "leaders" has a chance to win POTUS.)

yours, TN46

You obviously haven't the least idea what it takes to attract eyeballs. MSM will be utterly the last to strip Caribou Barbie of her 2012 mystique.

Media outlets, including the Post, are so accustomed to the fake and the phony...like Obama, that when Palin says she isn't planning to run, they look for subterfuge. It is Obama types who duck and dodge, and seal documents and say one thing and do another. When Palin decides, she'll just tell us all.

If she is not running Jonathan, why are you so obsessed with her? Your hate is more revealing with every article. Since you can't be objective, why don't you just write about your favorite "boy crush" Obama? Now you don't have to obsess with Palin!

Here's the bottom line: the GOP Establishment has been making it clear that they do not want her to run for the White House. That alone should be enough to deter the Snowbilly from Alaska.

I hope she is getting taxed on all this money she is making! And just like all celeberties, she too will eventually fade out, however, most celeberties do not maintain a hateful attitude towards others........besides, Alask belongs to all Americans.not just Palin
....................I agree with other opinions that she is about popularity.

Popularity is one thing but being commander in chief takes compassion, knowledge and understanding, fairnessand what the American people need.

Jon, you mentioned Tom Van Flein does/did research for Sarah Palin's facebook/speech. I didn't know any research was involved in her speech, she just opened her mouth & words came out like goat droppings.

lost in love for the obfuscater in chief, the Post's many talented writers have missed the boat again...Sarah Palin, like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Bill O'Reilly is laughing all the way to the bank! All she has to do is tweet a misspelled word and y'all run articles with her name in the headline for weeks! You Dems and left wing whackjobs have Joe Biden talking out of his a$$ all the time. The man is an idiot, a failure at everything, and a known LIAR. Do some articles about his sad life and hairplugs so he can sell some books and get a post-Blair House mini-series on TLC. You guys make a pathetic attempt to sway Republicans and Tea Partiers away from Sarah Palin and the others listed above, but we are INSIDERS! We know what is going on, and know it is all designed to make you squirm for our comedic relief! STOP SQUIRMING! Do an article about how hope and change were manifest in the last 48 hours of the Pelosi-Drained Swamp a.k.a the 111th congress, where a Clintonian Bill was repealed, and the Russians were placated, and the bill to give amnesty to ILLEGAL ALIENS just missed. The Season of Progress as your savior coined it, where he will now 'pivot' his attention to 'jumpstart' the economy...wait you did THAT story TWO YEARS AGO! OOPS! your bad, maybe you should ask Santa for a scholarship to barber college so you can make an honest living grooming Joe Bidens PLUGS!

Who's fuelling greed in the US? Little wonder tnere are half as many timed commercials on a half hour program than the program itself. 7 to 8 minues program to 4 to 5 minues commercials. Time it sometime.
lf the networks can afford to pay out that amount of money how much are they making from commercials of which most are a business deduction for companies that have them. What ignoramuses out there watch such drivel anyway. Like Barnum stated long ago,'There's one born every minute!!!!

God knows the right wing doesn't want anyone to mention the horrible performance of Bush II (The wars, the debt, the violation of rights, torture, Cheney etc). They only want to criticize those that are trying to clean up the right wing "messes."

Where do you think Obama fits in here? He has compassion for foreign countries and little for the US, but perhaps that's ok for you folks! Knowledge and understanding? He thought there were 57 states in his campaign and doesn't realize that when you borrow money you don't have, someone will eventually have to pay it back! Fairness? If taking from those who have earned it to give to those who haven't is fair then he is certainly there!

Palin will not run for POTUS. She would have to take an enormous pay cut and the Moose billy ain't about to do that.

Actually, Palin is so unaware of any situation that no one can be sure this ditzy woman will not run for the Presidency. If sh has any self awareness, she will make certain she does not because if sh runs, it will explode the meme that she is a rising star. she is a total embarrassment to your party and if she runs, Republicans once again will lose big time!

Why shouldn't she? Obama did and with the same qualifications as she has minus a real birth certificate. The only other thing against her is she didn't work for the CIA.

Just my Opinions which are usually correct.

WHEN JFK RAN IN 1960, I COULDN'T VOTE BUT I WAS SPELLBOUND. IT WAS A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE A FINE IRISH CATHOLIC LAD TO REPRESENT ME. IT'S PROBABLY THE SAME NOW WITH THE MNORTIY COMMUNITY. IT'S NATURAL. THE NOVEMBER ELECTION WAS IMPRESSIVE. SOME SAY IT WAS A SIGNAL TO COMPROMISE, SOME TO CHANGE COURSE. I SAY TO REVERSE COURSE; OTHERWISE, THERE WILL A NEW PRESIDENT COME 2012.

I have a comment on Tom Van Flein's response to Palins team does NOT speak anonymously. This was his post.

Do any of you see this guy contradicting himself? He says does NOT speak anonymously then says 95% of the time it is fiction. So that means 5% of the time it is true? What happened to does NOT Mr.Flein? Maybe Palin posted that comment using his name. That would explain the stupidity.
