Sarah Palin's leadership moment

By Jonathan Capehart

Whether she likes it or not and whether it's fair or not, Sarah Palin is a major character in the drama surrounding the tragedy in Tucson. This comes with the territory when one has operated as a hub in the nation's political discourse since the 2008 presidential contest. But while I understand the defensive crouch she is now in, it's time she actually be the image she likes to project: a leader.

Conservative commentator David Frum gives Palin an excellent eight-point plan to respond in a manner that would allow her to address the controversy surrounding her and move beyond it. Points four and five deliver two key pieces of advice.

(4) Join the conversation. You have often complained about out-of-bounds personal comments directed toward you (eg, David Letterman's). Now try to show toward others the same empathy that you demand from others. Innocent as you feel yourself to be, try to imagine how it must have felt to be Giffords during this past campaign season: guns showing up at her rallies, her offices vandalized, death threats - and your map as the finishing touch. Imagine how her family must feel. Speak to them.

(5) Challenge your opponents. In the past hours, many people have cited President Obama's (borrowed) line about bringing a knife to a gun fight. They have a point! At the same time as you publicly commit to raise your game, invite your political opponents to raise theirs. Instead of deflecting the blame, share it.

Just because I don't think Palin will run for president doesn't mean I don't think she should rise to the occasion when national leadership is called for. The question is, will she?

Doubtful - is there money in it?

This is an interesting question - when the high school mean girl decides to grow up, what will she be like? What has Palin got besides snarky anger? Somehow I don't see a Bill Buckley hiding inside the expensive clothes.

What's a lightweight to do?

Sarah Palin will speak if someone is willing to give her $100,000, trip on a private jet and bendy straws. We have determined her price and we all know what she happens to be.

Thank you, Rozinante2. You took the words right from my fingertips.

She's the high school snarky mean girl... There is no there there except for her nastiness.

All she wants now is to make money -- and be mean.

How many gun sights has Sarah Palin looked through? Seriously! And how many Surveyor sights has she looked through? Really!

What do you honestly believe? When she say those cross-hairs on the map targeting those districts and she tweeted as to promote the map, DON'T RETREAT - INSTEAD RELOAD, well, tell me, how do you reload a surveyor sight. Sarah Palin, it would seem -- to any reasonable person -- was lying about believing that those were surveyor sights. She brags about shooting and killing publicly. Did she not, at least for a moment, think that those symbols look an inksy winksy bitty like rifle sights? Now really?!

Now the question is why is she lying? Maybe she IS guilty and knows that this will hurt her aspirations to be President so she plays ignorant.

I believe they all the members of the Tea Party know that those were intended to be rifle sights but to not admit fault, the Bible says to confess your part in any conflict
“go and be reconciled to your brother.” (Matthew 5:24). The state of America now has reached new lows. Maybe it is because of the wars, maybe it is because of the economy but people who profess hatred, who put up cross-hair targets and tweet "don't retreat - instead reload," have no place in this country of ours.

Sarah Palin should confess her role in this tragety. Peter urges us: “Turn away from evil and do good. Work hard at living in peace with others.” (1 Peter 3:11). When you work for peace, you are doing what God would do. That’s why God calls peacemakers his children.

My prayers are with you Sarah Palin.

Bad things do happen to good people. What is unfortunate is that those who would use vitriol with implied threats (remember 'there's a revolution coming' or 'don't retreat, reload' or 'don't tread on me' or the socialists are taking over'?) don't want to acknowledge, and therefore understand, that words, like actions, have consequences- sometimes uncontrollable consequences. Whether it's planting a seed in the mind of an impressionable unstable young man, or reinforcing the potential violence in another. This young man, via his somewhat incoherent YouTube rants, seemed to have issues with the constitution, and the government trying to take over. Just because in his mental state he does not coherently repeat verbatim what those in the political sphere have said, does not mean he was not influenced by it. If not him, then others are. If you preach violence, revolution, overthrowing the government, and create fear that the President of all people is trying to kill American democracy, do not be surprised if someone goes off the deep end, particularly during a severe recession. With news & radio (bullies) fomenting hatred, it is only surprising something this radical has not occurred before now. Whether his parents knew of his predilections is between them and their maker. What we do know is that some folks continue to justify their own behaviors that contribute to a decline in civilization and even have the audacity to do it under the guise of Christianity. And as long as that continues, we can expect to see more incidents such as this.

You're right about a leadership moment...Sarah Palin needs to show the American people how effective she can be at slapping around the drive-by media. Their efforts to join this shooting and Palin at the hip is resulting in the most blessed "host-donor reaction" ever to occur. Without a hint of logic, the press is hoping that the gullible leftward segment of American society will create the inertia to target Palin...who had NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH MOTIVATING THIS SHOOTING. Now Limbaugh however does have a duty...since the press has also implicated him, he needs to use his bullyboy stature to bully those in society who allowed this shooter to fall through the cracks to take responsibility for it. Like Palin, Limbaugh has no relation to this left wing nut either.

Posted by: coyotesx51 | January 11, 2011 1:37 PM | Report abuse

coyotesx51:

You must be crazy. This is not the time for Palin to be attacking the media. She's done enough damage by making Americans fearful, hateful, and distrustful of one another and for what? So she could sell more books and make more money. Maybe she didn't directly motivate this shooting, but by even putting those ideas out there you make it easier for someone unstable to latch onto them and drive hard to their 'logical' conclusion. When a political figure says 'second amendment remedies' or 'don't retreat, reload!', that's an incitement to violence and murder and your excusing it only guarantees that it will happen again.

Its time for the media to stop elevating Palin. Her every comment on every subject is simply not news worthy. She's not responsible for this man's insanity and the media really needs to stop making this about what Sarah has to say.

Anyone with 1/2 a heart is devastated about this violence and hearts and prayers are with all the victims and families, as it should be. What Sarah Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Olbermann, or Maddow has to say is just a sideshow for ratings.

How about for 2011, the MSM (doesn't include pundit TV on either side) focus on the issues and the serious candidates; not the snarky, silly comments of Palin or anyone else who doesn't have intelligent solutions to the problems facing this country and the world.

We don't know if Loughner had health insurance, but he falls into a pool of people who often go uninsured—not young enough to be covered by parents (until the health-care bill's coverage of twentysomethings kicked in a few months ago), not old enough for Medicare, not poor enough for Medicaid. If such a person happens to have a history of mental illness, he will be effectively uninsurable.

@JFredSmug: Hitler was an anti-Christian, neo-pagan LEFTIST as has been exhaustively demonstrated by Dr. John Ray.
http://constitutionalistnc.tripod.com/hitler-leftist/id2.html

For those who wish to explore the subject in greater depth, a useful recent resource would be a book by an expert on Italian Fascism: “The Faces of Janus: Marxism and Fascism in the 20th Century”, by A. James Gregor.
http://www.amazon.com/Faces-Janus-Marxism-Fascism-Twentieth/dp/0300106025

Gregor exhaustively demonstrates that Fascism and Nazism modelled their methods on the atheistic Marxism of Lenin and Stalin; and that the Fascist idea of adding nationalism to socialism was later taken up by Stalin and Mao— so that (in the end) Fascism and Communism were merely twin atheistic Marxist sects. Thus, during the era of their big confrontation, Soviet Russia and Maoist China were perfectly correct in accusing one-another of being “fascists.”

it doesn't matter whether this lunatic was motivated by this or that particular violent rhetoric.

unless you can show that no lunatic has ever taken violent rhetoric seriously, the fact remains that at some point the rhetoric crosses the line. puffery like targeting a district, or bringing a gun to a knife fight is general trash talk, but still should be avoided. Invoking second amendment rights to take the blood of tyrants with bullets over ballots and putting crosshairs on threats to America is a whole 'nother plane. It's irresponsible, period.

** Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.“

OK you pack of recalcitrant, unrepentant jerkwads, wastes of Oxygen, and good bodily fluids. Sarah Palin is no more responsible for importing toxic, dangerous substances in the form of political speech into Tucson or any other Mecca, than Chris O'Donnell, Sharon Angle, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, George Soros, or Joe Biden.

Except maybe, just maybe, if the scope of the near insane rush to judgement down the slick as snot, slippery slope toward Fascism, the involvement of Boy Georgie, is considered in an equally glaring light of truth, who ambidextrously, bi-handedly, with uber-partisan administrative help and encouragement, shared his ample piece of life's lottery pie with the "freedom and tokes for all" campaign in Caleafornia, and Mecca West (Arizona), so that now, in the era of ginned up hope and change, any unemployed, imbalanced youth, reject from the infirmary and the infantry to be sure, can self medicate, recreate to the tune of Death Metal, Marx, Lenin, Mao's little book, the Jihad Minuet, and semi-auto weapon fire in his head, while the very essence of his soul is sucked Wright out of his being (great job BTW ACLU for protecting his Wrights during this formative time, without which he may never have reached his full potential, Allahu Akbar!).

Maybe also kudos to the latter on the list of renown, Juseph Rob('em when they're up) Rob('em when they're down)in(a v)ette ('Dem Jobs Aren't Comin' Back on My Watch) Bi(te me)den, who in rare, but conspicuous moments of clarity and transparency, shouted to all on main streets, here and around the world, "Good luck to those 30,000,000+ people, in 14,000,000+ households no better off, worse, or in complete crisis, along with the 40,000,000 professional poor soul\victims of illiberalism in inaction, that are stuck in the suck hole (at the brink), dug by skunks in tuxedos, empty skirts, and unfortunately, transparent speedos, who all just got another hole punched in our tin cup, 2% lump of coal tossed into OUR Chris'mas stocking, along with promises of more, and more of the same for the next two years", "I", given the Bush Era, apparently still in the seat of power over JOBS, "have done, to the best of my incompetence", all that can be done for you whiners and losers.

Could it be supposed that the dear poor youth, Jared Loughner, from the Mecca (so eruditely described and expounded on by the Pundit Sheriff of Nuttingham, Dupener of Tucson) of economically disenfranchised citizens, the lying, lawyers of liberaland promised to save, and suddenly at the end of 2010, became important hostages of some greedy, unscrupulous, scheme to withhold a brilliant solution to all OUR troubles by a, all too often, named, puny, devoid of ideas minority, and now suddenly bedazzled by the unveiling, as if by magic, at the very last gasp of a whole row of the lamest ducks in the history of the Universe, who are now retired to a much better life than they all are leaving to US?

Great job 111th Congress of Infamy, also present, but not held accountable for the mayhem they have sustained, during the shooter's coming out years.

Maybe, again just maybe, Jared woke up one day a couple of years ago, seeing in his youthful innocence, and yes ignorance, but lacking the guidance to reason through the confusion anyone does and would have over a Governance Model, under wraps for decades, now revealed for all to see, that can only draw the light and life out of OUR brilliantly inspired and fortuitously inherited Democratic Republic that has and will be the salvation of all the Universe (not universe-centric, just the hope and faith of all the years), says to himself (or in himself), "I'm **fing out of here, this leaderless government, led by the blind (and blind suckers), sucks". The rest is History.

Let’s see now, Constitutionally protected and encouraged activity in a free society on the one hand, and despicable, deranged, defamatory (inherently unlawful) attempts to fundamentally alter OUR destiny, OUR economic and leadership standing in the World. WE the People think there is a distinct diversity, and overwhelmingly palpable inequality in equivalency all over your pathetic selves.

So here's what you got to work with jerkmocrats, a whole generation of the best and brightest having the Faith and Trust of the Founders pummelled and squeezed out of OUR Educational System, where they now are daily exposed to an unspeakable betrayal by being told to always abide without fail, being told BY OUR OWN LEADERS (LED IN BLINDNESS by the BLIND), among others, to tolerate the intolerable, to understand the inscrutable, to defend the indefensible, to suck it up and ask for more in OUR own Nation. No wonder they are impoverished of spirit, confused and angry, not knowing why or what for, when there is no excuse for this situation to continue. So which one of y’all will cast one more of these boulders of baked-hard excrement at another Child in OUR infinite, delicate care, or at a Neo-Reformation Patriot in Training???

This is Rhetorical, Analytical Political Speech, protected (rightfully) by the Constitution of the United States of a Glorious Free America.

It is not vitriolic, angy, inflammatory, incendiary, or not apropos in any way.

Make OUR day!

Regardless of her statements, or those of her staff now, Sarah Palin did not insist that those were NOT cross hairs when people first noted the similarities and raised the point.

If it was acceptable for her to let the statement (or misunderstanding) stand months ago (March 2010), why is she backpedaling now?

However, following the initial controversy over the "crosshairs" last year, Palin issued her now oft repeated rallying cry, "Don't retreat. RELOAD."

Politico's Jonathan Martin was the first to point out that Palin herself, in a tweet last November following the election, referred to the crosshairs as a "bull's eye."

Mr Capehart, I usually agree with you but from the outset the premise is invalid; Sarah Palin is not a leader. She quit her elected position as Governor of Alaska for the limelight and money she could make selling herself. The Repubs and the tea kooks will never answer a direct question but will rather deflect. Until these folks own up to their deeds, America should not trust them. The theme for 2011 remains unchanged for me; "you can fool some of the people, all the time". We have only one person to blame for this and that's John McCain!

Mentally sick individuals do focus on certain rhetoric and then act on it. If this man's focus was on the rhetoric of the "left" and "liberal" he would not have aimed his aggression towards the Congresswoman and others there to see her.

When the Republican Party introduced Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate, they unleashed a money-hungry, media hungry, narcissistic egomania. She came out with her "hockey mom" and "grizzly mom" mantras, and denigrating Pres. Obama as a "community organizer", she became the darling of the media, both mainstream and cable. It's amazing that they took her seriously with her limited intellect.

Yes, she and the rest of Fox's crew along with Rush Limbaugh and other conservative radio/tv commentators are responsible for the inciteful, vitriolic and hateful rhetoric that a mentally sick person can become obsessed and then act on it.

Now, the conservatives are saying that the Democrats are playing politics with this. Reality check...the Republicans are playing politics, and very sick politics with this very unfortunate and grevious horror. Republicans have always been very good on the offense. They ease the guilt of those sick individuals who embrace their hate.

The rhetoric of the right is not equal to the rhetoric of the left. The right is much more threatening, given to inciting violence with their "don't retreat, reload", targeting members who voted for the healthcare bill, etc.

Your pathetic attempts to stop the Sarah Tsunami are laughable!!

Sarah Palin's Leadership moment? We have a leader already....his name is President Barack Obama....that's all leadership we need. Palin only cares about Palin. She's only interested in the almighty dollar. furthermore, i think it's best we don't hear from the gov-period.

The esoteric Web references from KaddafiDelendaEst are the very embodiment of the principle, “I read it on the Internet, so it must be true.”

The Malkin (now THERE’s a paragon of unbiased reportage) thing is old news. Representative Frank Kratovil (D-MD) was hanged (not hung) in effigy OUTSIDE HIS OWN OFFICE in July 2009 in advance of the impending House vote on health care reform.

One of the links on MALKIN’S OWN WEB SITE admits, “While the attack on the Scouts bus was reported to me by a reliable source, I'm not sure it is correct. The demonstrators attacked a number of buses in the manner described, but I haven't been able to verify that the Scouts were on one of them.” Similarly suspect is the characterization of the protesters as “liberal/anarchist/Communist/pro-Obama protesters” -- a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black -- since by the “reporter”’s own account, none of the bus protesters was apprehended, let alone prosecuted.

Although there was sporadic violence and some protesters self-identified as “anarchists”, I could not find any reliable reporting of the alleged bus incidents. I did, however, find numerous MSM accounts of dozens of reporters being arrested by police while covering the protests.

What consistently identifies many conservative commentators is their utter and constant disregard for truth when their lies can readily be objectively disproved. As Senator Moynihan said, “You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts.”

They were SURVEYOR sights, people! Sur-VEY-or! Didn't you hear? Haven't you ever RELOADED a surveyor sight? Here in Alaska we do it all the time! They come with those... cartridges of 30, er, shots each? I mean, thirty chances to... survey. Measure-- you know! Come on!

It's natural to launch a political campaign against opposing politicians by urging your supporters to SURVEY them. You know, to... find their weaknesses. Just watch them, in case they screw up and have a Macaca moment? Yeah, that's it! Good conservatives, go and WATCH those Dems in the districts under the crosshairs - which are SURVEYOR'S crosshairs as you know...

Surveyor sights. Get your minds out of the foxhole people. Todd and I just wanted the fired-up troops to... survey those Democrats. Sheesh! The lamestream media is at it again!

WAIT! No, those were not surveyor sights at all! They were medieval CROSSES! It was Todd's idea, silly him, that we'd give this a religious angle. Calling on God's people to get out there and KNOCK ON DOORS for our tea party candidates. RELOAD your bags of campaign literature and get out there! Yeah, that's what it meant. Calling all Christian Soldier-- er, well not soldiers per se, not in the shooting sense, but OH NEVER MIND!!!

You lamestream media people are driving me CRAZY!!! You are ruining my one shot at-- um, CHANCE at the White House. Oh good grief...

You are looking for leadership from Sarah Palin? Honey, as a wise person once told me: "You don't shop for lettuce at the hardware store."

It's to late for Palin. I've seen her with her daughter Piper. She knows what it's like to have a daughter that age. She now knows a family is in unbelievable pain with the murder of theirs to a gunshot.
Palin paused. She tried to whitewash her websites. She tried to backpaddle from a gun sight map to a surveyor's map.
Rep. Gifford said on cable TV that words have consequences.
It could be a coincidence. We may never know. Palin chose for her rhetoric to be
based on gun slogans. Now we know that words have consequences.

So many suffering and mourning.

Palin never has nor will have anything worthwhile to say and only a fool would look to her for "Leadership"

I don't agree she should say more. Her silence has been one of the best things that's happened to national discourse in quite some time.

After blaming and smearing the Sarah Palin for the Arizona killing, Washington Post and Jonathan Capehart have succeeded in their long-cherished obssession of mobilising a hit squad to assasinate the Palin family:

Now Washington Post and Capehart are trying to lure the Palin family out so that they can be a easy sitting target for their fanatic followers.

@skponggol: "...have succeeded in their long-cherished obssession of mobilising a hit squad to assasinate the Palin family".

Is this a long-held fantasy cause we really don't see any where that individuals are forming hit squads or 'targeting' the Palins. We do see where they are asked to step up (or man up as Sarah would say) and at least acknowledge that words have consequences and some unstable individual can take their violent 'metaphors' and possibly apply them literally.

Sharon Angle and Sarah Palin are both defending their mean spirited threatening words of violence, their ignorant call for aggression, painting targets on people and then when those people are murdered all these shrill, crotchety evil hearted women can do is defend their antagonist hate filled words? no remorse? where is the apology? where are the regrets? wow, these women are domestic terrorists, they should both be in a jail cell and be made to repent.
A person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act ""dangerous to human life"" that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion
