Huckabee 'slip' on Kenya was more like a slide

By Jonathan Capehart

Sorry, Steve, but I'm going to have to disagree with your "Freudian slip" pass given to Mike Huckabee. A slip would be saying "Osama" instead of "Obama" when referring to the president. What the former Arkansas governor, who is reportedly thinking about running for the Republican presidential nomination again in 2012, did was inexplicably slide head-first into the far right's nether world of conspiracy and paranoia.

I would love to know more. What I know is troubling enough. And one thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, [is] very different than the average American.

...if you think about it, his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather.

Huckabee's spokesperson tried to clear things up.

Governor Huckabee simply misspoke when he alluded to President Obama growing up in "Kenya." The Governor meant to say the President grew up in Indonesia.

So, then, what about all that stuff about the British and Kenya and Obama's father and grandfather? Oh, nevermind.

Everyone's a little mystified by what Huckabee said. He's supposed to be the reasonable, rationale and principled one among conservative leaders. Perhaps he's not really running for president, as John Heilemann, who recently interviewed Huckabee for New York magazine, suggested on "Morning Joe" today. That very well may be. Fox News announced today that it suspended the contributor contracts of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum because the "have signaled possible runs for the Presidency." No mention of Huckabee or a certain former governor from Alaska. After yesterday's slip, er, slide, I don't think we have to worry about Huckabee leaving Fox anytime soon.

There is really only two explanations given the full context of his remarks; he either was so ill informed that he actually bought into the Kenyan upbringing myth, or he was intentionally targeting republican votes he will need to win a primary. Neither of these scenarios looks good for him (except with the afore mentioned primary voter).

Ironically, Obama's broader world view is actually one of his key strengths, and the weak world view of Bush and his administration is a good example of why the broader world view is an asset. Obama may well have a different world view perspective than the average American, but the average American does not have to deal with the rest of the world on a daily basis. This enhanced perspective is exactly what we need in a President.

Gomer was just letting some of that crazy guy, D'Souza, slip in to his world view of Obama. Remember all of that pent up repression learned from his father...?

And what about letting the "opps, I meant he grew up in Indonesia" go in mea culpa? I believe it was 0-6 in Hawaii, 6-10 in Indonesia, and then back to Hawaii before going to California for university. BIG difference.

It's not a slip or slide - it's a LIE!!!

Huckabee is a LIAR!!!

Pres. Obama did not grow up in Kenya and the Mau Mau certainly weren't in Indonesia.

He's suppose to be a "reasonable" and "Christian" guy. Is it any wonder that people question Christainity with people like him as an example.

Republicans need to keep insisting that our President is "very different than the average American" or their 'belief' that Obama is an invalid usurper of the Presidency.

For Republicans, it's a faith-based world and to claim that what they believe isn't true is just as offensive to them as saying that that their "Faith" is wrong. That the Bible isn't rue, word for word.

Evolution, global warming, government for the common good, science? Facts are offensive to 'Believers'.

It's no surprise that Huckabee polls ahead of all others in the South. They still believe that we should celebrate Treason of The Confederacy and Traitors that led them into War against the U.S.A.

I am, basically, a center-right independent in my politics. I am exactly the type of voter without whom the Republicans have no chance of winning an election.

I truly believe that our Republic exists to guarantee our rights and as much individual liberty as possible. I am, of course, opposed to left-wing attempts to use the power of the state to tell me what I can eat or what I can say. I am EQUALLY opposed to those who would use the power of the state to force their religion upon us, to use public funds for prostelyzation, presume to tell us whom we can love and so on and for exactly the same reason: the government simply has no business so interfering in the citizen's personal life and decisions. I will not therefore vote for Palin, Huckabee, Gingrich or any other politician who can't seem to separate their politics from their religion.

And before some poster or another accuses me of being a 'liberal in disguise' because they don't like what I am saying, please know that I've been posting here for years, that everything I've ever written is availible in my profile, so please check it before you question my own assessment of my own politics.

So, again, take it for what it is worth, Republicans: don't nominate a religious rightist if you want any chance of attracting people like myself with whom you will never win and never have.

It's the law of unintended consequences: Murdoch gave jobs to Huckabee and Palin to increase their visibility prior to 2012 and give them a leg up in the presidential race. Unfortunately for the Aussie kingmaker, now that the hillbillies have started earning (at least) six figures for the first time in their lives, they don't want to run for office and give up all that money.

President Obama's supporters and admirers are rightly outraged at the distortion of his early life and upbringing by Mike Huckabee. Maybe they can now understand better the feelings of the supporters and admirers of Governor Sarah Palin at the torrent of lies that have been heaped upon her life and record.

Huckie meant to say Indonesia. Perhaps he was thinking of Obamas granddmother who said he was born in Africa or when Michelle said that was the bontinent of Obamas birth..... No problem with the 2 Obama women bringing up Africa but the media goes nuts on Huckie ? Oh and yes the media simply ignored Michelle's statement of

"ITS OUR TURN NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW "

No no..thats ok...she didnt mean it, she misspoke, she wasnt being a racist...wink wink...

Huckabee is far too smart for his own good - he knows his base and deliberately trotted out the now trite and utterly discredited "Obama isn't one of us" ploy.

Another example of the Big Lie propaganda technique, perfected by Joseph Goebbels: Tell a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."

And, by the way, the British WERE imperialists and heartily deserved the hatred of the Kenyans.

My two cents.

I'm with @andrew23boyle. I'm the true center-right 'Independent' without whom any Republican candidate has zero chance and most of these so-called 'candidates' (Palin, Newt, Rick S, etc..) would have me voting for just about anyone else to keep them out of office.

The Republicans need to choose someone who will speak more towards the center or center-right and not just be the extreme opposite of the 'liberal wing of the liberal party'. Otherwise we can expect 4 more years from Pres. Obama and multiple future years of other hard-left Democrats.

The reasonable Confederate/Klan/White Citizens Council favorite son Mike Huckabee was bottom fishing. Huckabee "misspoke" no he lied.

Because he could not call attention to the obvious-Obama is black- and the known -Obama's father was a Kenyan-by using the traditional N..word, Huckabee substituted the K...word for Kenyan. He could have used the M..word for Muslim. But when called out Huckabee went to the I...word aka Indonesian instead.

Obama is also Hawaiian which unbeknownst to many regular watchers of the high school graduate entertainers-Beck,Rove and Hannity- on Fox News is in America.

John McCain was not born in America(Panama Canal Zone Panama). But the absence of a year round natural tan and his American name spared him any scrutiny.

Listen, licans and teapartarians: we get the message. Your oath to Satan requires you to knock our president and our country as strongly and as often as possible. Since we Americans, unlike your Al Queda and Westboro Baptist allies, believe in freedumb of speech, we don't shut you down. But please, try not to spray spittle when you shout your lies.

Yes it was stupid to say that the President was raised in Kenya, whether on purpose or otherwise. However, the larger truth of Huckabee's remark and what he was getting at was that Obama is informed by his upbringing and that includes a more jaundiced view of the British than is shared by most Americans. I personally was offended that Obama returned the bust of Churchill to the British embassy. Perhaps they will keep in storage and offer to return it to our next president, who I hope is someone who does not allow prejudice to cloud his or her understanding of who our true, and likely only, friend is.

You're not a liberal in disguise, you're a libertarian (of sorts), and I think that a good portion of Americans also fit into this mold -- particularly younger Americans. I really believe that the Republican party is signing its death warrant by continuing to push on this religious/social engineering path that they believe appeals to their "base." There are a lot of folks who are very like you and would vote Repub. based on finanical issues who will not agree with government telling people who they can/can't marry, what they can/can't do with their bodies, etc...

I'm not sure how long this coalition will hold between laissez-faire buisiness interests and the social right. Sooner or later the people with the bucks (buisiness) are going to realize that the social right is loosing them more votes than its getting them, and they're going to start pushing a seperate agenda. We may be moving toward the birth of a new party (and I DON'T mean the Tea Party - that's just a symptom, not a solution).

I guess we'll all just have to stay tuned.

Furthermore, all preachers and priests need to
speak out against the culture of lies on a political level.

We have separation of Church and State, with IRS
regulations that pertain to charity/religious institutions.
It's more about write-offs or no taxation.

That does not mean separation of spirituality in politics....
Where are the Billy Grahams to arrest this culture in the US?

There are two issues here: First, his obvious ignorance, (closer to lying in this case). Second, his identification with the Brits, their colonialism, atrocities, etc.

Hate to say it, but these seem to be prevalent in the US, largely among whites. (especially republicans), sad, but true.

It was a lie, all the way....it was fully publicized that Obama's father left when he was 2 yrs old...that is hardly "growing up in Kenya with his father," to paraphrase. Also, it is well known that Obama was born in Hawaii, which, last I knew, was one of the 50 states of the United States. Thirdly, suggesting that Obama's world view of Great Britian is so different from our own....we must first remember our own heritage...that is we broke off from the Brits and were not friends until the 1900's WWI. That would be around 130 yrs out of (currently) 235 yrs...still over 50%. Obviously our war of Independence, the war of 1812, and then the Brits also tried to finance the Confederacy, so they could possibly beat the Union in our Civil War.

He lied, on purpose, bearing false witness...which, if you read the Bible (and he used to be one of the people who interpreted it for a congregation, so he should know this) is actually breaking one of the 10 Commandments. Clearly, there is a special place in hell for a reverend who goes around preaching the Bible to others, but then acts like it doesn't apply to him.

Obama must have been born in Kenya of a Kenyan father and an American mother, otherwise why would he not allow his Hawaii birth certificate to be shown to the public, the governor of Hawaii attempted to force this, and the courts disallowed it because the individual must agree to it. Obama would not agree to have it publicly shown....what does this tell you?

Here is the real issue. Our national debt has us beholding to China. Since the days of Bill Clinton the country has not even came close to balancing the budget let alone paying down the debt. We have a national leadership that has no interest, both parties included, to cause a surplus so the debt can be payed down. No one is walking the walk. Some are talking the talk but nothing is changing. Every other issue, crisis and everything else means nothing unless the USA starts paying down the debt. That has to be the focus. Nothing else matters and everything else has to be organized to pay down the debt. That must be the focus. People and organizations won't like it but that is the way it is. Pardon my language but the crap(shxx) has hit the fan. God blessed America and America as a nation got greedy.

Obama, Osama, the Hawaiian-Kenyan or whatever, and whoever he is, does what the unions tell him to do. Obama and his people have a philosophy and purpose to take, confiscate, or borrow as much money as they can, and put the repayment problem on the backs of the citizen taxpayer. Kind of a legal grand theft! Democrats, or Demorats,as you may prefer, have been building and perfecting their propaganda for the covering "the unions on the take" schemes for a long time. They claim to nation build, everywhere but here! Democrats want to give amnesty to the illegal aliens residing here too, they've allowed to come in by failure to enforce Federal Law, Title 8.0 USC.
We are now very broke, and the world knows it. Obama has no respect in the world, nor does our nation, because of what Obama, his Congress, and his party has done in lawmaking and breaking in the United States. We will recover when Obama is gone, but it will take a lot of hardship for everyone for a very long time...

Mau Mau was not in Indonesia, neither was Obama's grandfather. Huckabee obviously said precisely what he wanted to. Now, his saying it was a slip of the tongue is a an evident prevarication. How does a Baptist minister square away such lying in relation to his religion?? Only if he is a blatant hypocrite.

The problem with born-again Christians like Huckabee is that they are dedicatedly and staidfastly affirming that they absolutely know things that they have no way of really absolutely knowing, except that they choose to believe them. When you practice deceiving yourself like this in one area, the brain can no longer distinguish any difference between truth and deception -- for them, what is true is simply what one wants to believe. He probably really believes that he was talking about the British and Mau Mau in Indonesia. On another note, it seems that George Washington himself was not very keen on colonialism, I wonder why Huckabee thinks that anticolonialism is somehow un-American?

Posted by: johnnormansp | March 6, 2011 7:41 AM | Report abuse

I think the scariest thing is that Huck would surround himself with the same clueless bonehead advisors and publicists that don't have the brains (or guts) to try and correct their babbling leader.

All of them need a refresher course on geography and history. Scary to think that this is what passes as a presidential candidate.

Can anyone answer why Obama will not agree to have his Hawaii birth certificate shown to the public?.......the governor of Hawaii went to court in an attempt to do this, but the Hawaii court ruled that unless the individual gave their consent, the true birth certificate could not be divulged to the public.....Obama will not give his consent....why not?

Posted by: bstone1931 | March 6, 2011 8:22 AM | Report abuse

This was a blatant, well-thought-out, manufactured lie with full knowledge aforethought that spewing hatred and lies will be picked up and the crazy media will repeat it so much that people without brains will believe it.

Humans do not process negatives well--they hear "it was a lie that ...." they only process the "that . . . !"

I now see Huckabee as the most evil of people. Apparently his sect of Christianity supports making up lies to damage people as long as it benefits the speaker and his friends.

Perhaps (since Fox Newsers are so focused on this) Huckabee is the Anti-Christ!!

Who is Mr. Huckabee? Where does he come from? Does he have a birth certificate? Who were his parents? His grand parents? His great? Great-great, ect.? When did the Huckabee’s and others arrive in America? Were they documented? Did his forefather’s and mother’s families fight in the American Revolution? On what side? The civil War? On what side? Own slaves? Take part in lunching(s)? Become followers of Bedford Forrest? Become members of the KKK or other hate groups? Inquiring minds want to know! Ordinarily, these questions would be of no concern. No one would think to ask them , but we no longer are living in ordinary times. WOW! 'Look at me! I want to help conservatives cut the budget.' 'I'm a good president.' If he wouldn't have created this mess in the first place we wouldn't have to fix it! Obama makes a statement that's in poor taste, or outright LIES to us and you ignore it. A conservative says one thing you don't like and your ready to break out torches and pitch fork.

Down with obama, down with obama care, and I pray to GOD we get someone with some real moral values for president in 2012!

Ahh Republicans! Back to business as usual. It seems no one learns their lessons when given another chance. So, where is the candidate for the other 70% of the people? The aborsionist left does not represent me. Inquisitionist right does not represent me. Where is my representation in government? Time to terminate these two parties. We need a Common Sense party as this is lacking in Congress.

I would like to make a couple of points. First the British were imperialists and did oppress the Kenyan people, and millions of other people, including American, remember the tea party Mr. Huckabee? I know Mr. Huckabee, like so many on the right does not subscribe to things like facts, history and science, but the British were imperialists and did oppress, by their own admission. The second point is who cares about President Obama's personal view of the British? He was elected president of the United States not prime minister of the UK. How many presidents have we had who have personal views of various nations yet conduct foreign policy in the interest of the United States. I suggest that if Mr Huckabee is so concerned about the British he should run for Parliament.

Huck is NOT as sweet, reasonable, amiable as everyone thinks. Don't you remember during the campaign, when he 'joked',(so he said), about Obama being SHOT!!!???!

If Huckabee was a democrat, Fox News would be saying he is the minister of Westboro Baptist Church... then they would have a spokesperson come out and say, well, he was a baptist minister. Bearing false witness could cut both ways if the opposition choose to use it, huh?

Whoa sports fans! Before we condemn Mr. Huckabee's slip or slide or whatever ... would someone please explain to me Mish Obama's comments about her husband visiting "His home country of Kenya," not once but twice during the same speech? Perhaps she had trouble pronouncing the word "America" or maybe it just stuck in her throat the way it has so many times before. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLzJz2A2N1c]

Huckabee reminds me of a broken, down on his luck alcoholic appliance salesman and his religious pontifications seem disingenuous. Looks to me that if you can even fake having a failed political following that you can eventually belly-up to the bar and suck on the FOX financial teat and sock away your cash, while the rest of us go out and make an honest living.

Obama has to be the worst, next to Jimmy Carter; President we have had to endure! Can't wait till we see a good President! What a joke we have had with this President. He isn't honest about his birthplace and "God forbid" if his daughters are "knock up" and have to have a free abortion! Wouldn't want them to experience any form of degradation.

My parents were Russian, I was born here. If I went to Russia tomorrow I might say I was going back to my roots, my home. It's a figure of speech - get over it - HIS FATHER WAS KENYAN - he has roots in Kenya, a brother lives there. His mother was an American citizen (proof available - read it!) so it really doesn't matter where he was born, he's a naturalized citizen just like John McCain.

robtramsey : A joke is a president who takes us to war under false pretenses and then says "god told me to" and beginning the worst recession and real estate crash since the 1920's under his two terms of office and only creating 4 million jobs versus Clinton's 60 million and increasing the debt by 2 trillion: ALL THAT ROB, IS A JOKE OF A PRESIDENT. Obama has tried to secure healthcare for Americans, tired to take us into the 21st century so we can compete with China with our own new energy infrastructure including green sources and efficient high-speed rails. Bush couldn't even pronounce "infrastructasaur"....

"I personally was offended that Obama returned the bust of Churchill to the British embassy. Perhaps they will keep in storage and offer to return it to our next president, who I hope is someone who does not allow prejudice to cloud his or her understanding of who our true, and likely only, friend is."

Immbham,
For the record, the bust in question was moved from the president's office to his residence.

You are now officially unoffended, though I'm not sure any of this matters one way or another. Incoming presidents always rearrange things in the White House. Paintings come down; paintings go up. Statuary gets moved around.

To bstone1931:
"Obama must have been born in Kenya of a Kenyan father and an American mother, otherwise why would he not allow his Hawaii birth certificate to be shown to the public, the governor of Hawaii attempted to force this, and the courts disallowed it because the individual must agree to it. Obama would not agree to have it publicly shown....what does this tell you?"

Obama is too kind and qualified, so I'll answer, since you're asking me. It tells me he doesn't have time for knuckle-head dipshits. And you can't see my birth certificate either. Understand?

In reading these comments I see two threads that seem to be in common. The so called "birther" comments and "government should not tell people what to do in their private lives." As far as the "birther" issue I have to say this. I have worked in law enforcement for most of my life and I have learned to deal in evidence. I am still waiting for the simple and allegedly available evidence that would put an end to that particular controversy once and for all. Facts are all that matter. Either way. I would not vote for Huckabee because he has put cop killers back on the street. He has no chance and he needs to go away. I believe that productive choice is a private matter but I also believe that the ownership of firearms and choice of healthcare are also a citizen's personal choice. Neither party offers real solutions and it becomes the choice of the lesser of two evils. At this point, it is not the democratic party. It has become a train wreck. I want to see our soldiers home, our citizens working, illegal aliens removed from the country, an end to NAFTA, our domestic oil production cultivated and a muzzle put on out of control government. There is much more chance of that happening with the Republican party. Notice that I did say "chance." I thought that Carter and Bush were bad. Compared to Obama they were both statesmen.

The pro-Obama comments here are so typical it's pathetic. When Obama referrenced the 57 States of America it was all "oh, it's just a simple mistake" or "he "misspoke" from the lot of you. Now that a white man has made that same mistake your hatred, racism and intolerance comes screaming into the foreground and he's either ignorant, crazy or desperate to grab for votes. So long as this partisan BS continues its "We, the People" who will continue to get shafted.

Uh, wrong. Now wether this is due to your ignornace or your intentional attempt to distort the facts will remain conjecture.

The bust WAS retuned to the British government and now resides in the residence of Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the British Ambassador to the United States of America.

Do you actually not believe the evidence already shown before the election of Obama's birth certificate? It's a done deal, a dead horse, a republican fantasy, a distraction. What really irks you about Obama, that makes him look worse than Bush?

Posted by: north39 | March 6, 2011 12:32 PM | Report abuse

Huckabee's drawn out comments about Obama's might have been a slip of the tongue had he left it at that. But he went on to elaborate that Obamas "upbringing in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather."

It just shows how utterly ignorant and uninformed he is. As a presidential candidate the first thing you need to do is know your opponent.

If you get your news from Fox or from the grapevine it's going to hamper your credibility because "news sources" like these feed on rumor and gossip. They don't fact check.

This was evident by Huckabees comments on Obama. He just hasn't done his homework.

Americans hope that their President is better schooled and better informed then the average man on the street.

For a presidential candidate to get historical facts so wrong makes one wonder...what other bits of misinformation is Huckabee using to form his worldview

Ignorance need not be an excuse -- in today's political scene, it's agreat asset. Bush,Palin... the less knowledgeable, the more desirable to the anti-education crowd.. It's not even dirty politics, it's just an honest bid for the lowest level of book-larnin'...no policy needed, just one raft of untruth after the other...it's not that they have no pride; it's that they are proud of ignorance. If he's not really this ignorant, he had to pretend to be in order to boost his ratings.

BIRTHERS!! AMERICAN LAW 101 as follows: A NATURALIZED CITIZEN IS ONE BORN OF (at least) ONE PARENT WHO IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. OBAMA'S MOM HAS A CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHETHER OBAMA WAS BORN IN KENYA OR TIMBUCKTOO, HE IS NATURALIZED JUST LIKE JOHN MCCAIN AND THEREFORE QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT. SHOWING THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE TO A BUNCH OF YAHOOS BECAUSE THEY "DEMAND" IT IS STOOPING TO A LOW LOWER THAN HE'S WILLING TO GO AND TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE..

"...The pro-Obama comments here are so typical it's pathetic. When Obama referrenced the 57 States of America it was all "oh, it's just a simple mistake" or "he "misspoke" from the lot of you...."

Please read the excerpt:

"..."It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

The Times' conscientious Robin Abcarian thought she heard something different there. She checked her tape recorder. It had captured what he had actually said -- 57 states now. A new Louisiana Purchase that's gone unannounced so far? Was he channeling his inner John Kerry-Heinz 57 personality?

(UPDATE: At a later stop Obama was talking with reporters and expressed concern he'd also mis-stated the number of potential cyclone victims in Burma. He said, ""I hope I said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. I understand I said there were 57 states today. It's a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh." At that point, an aide cut him off and ushered journalists out. Before he could mis-speak again?)..."

I would wager a years salary that if someone had asked him right then and there to name the '57' states he would have realized his gaffe and laughed it off. As for Michael Dale Huckabee's comments...one word LIBEL.

Defamation—also called calumny, vilification, traducement, slander (for transitory statements), and libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words)—is the communication of a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government, or nation a negative image. It is usually a requirement that this claim be false and that the publication is communicated to someone other than the person defamed (the claimant).[1]
