More From the Chat: Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime

There was much discussion in yesterday's Freedom Rock about Tom Petty's enjoyable, workmanlike halftime performance. Then everybody got to thinking about next year and who would grace the makeshift stage at midfield of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Many ideas were thrown out there, and we've listed a lot of them below. If it was up to you, who would be playing a medley of hits while the Browns and Cowboys regroup in the locker room?

First choice: Stevie Wonder (who should have done the halftime show the year the Stones did it, when the Super Bowl was in Detroit). Second choice: George Clinton doing "Not Just Knee Deep" for 20 minutes. Third choice: Prince again.

This list reads like a boomer's record collection with a spattering of current names thrown in because they've been in the news (Britney, Winehouse).

Ideally, the halftime show would have a connection with host city, but I'm not familiar enough with the Tampa music scene. Is there a "Tampa music scene"? Anyway, failing that, I guess the NFL has to pander to the base demographic who will be at the Super Bowl, corporate-executive types whose record collection looks like the above list.

Ever since Janet/Justin, halftime has always been very boomery, although Prince is sort of an exception, I guess. Other than that: McCartney, Stones, Petty. So it makes sense that it'd be a boomery list. As for music from Tampa ... well the Hold Steady mention Ybor City in lots of songs.

I really wouldn't object to any of these if the show were named, like, "E*Trade Presents The Remnants of Dave Grohl's Integrity," or "The Pepsi Tribute to Music Your Dad Probably Likes." Beyonce would also be a good choice.

While I wrote in Metallica, GNR, Elton and Billy Joel, I would love to see Prince do it every year just to see if he can top playing his....manhood, on a giant screen in front 100 million people.

as a west florida native, i can assure you that there is absolutely no "tampa music scene" ... the closest you'll find is some super cheesed-out metal, buffet cover bands, or maybe some cuban flamenco or salsa or something (does mid-90s house played to 30-something mullet-wearers sucking down hurricanes count?)

FWIW, against me! is the best florida band around, and it would be hilarious to see their fans squeal about them selling out at the super bowl
