Parton The Interruption
Went to a comedy show last night, and a Dolly Parton concert broke out!
Or is it the other way around? Whatevs: While Dolly is a brilliant songwriter and a superlative vocal stylist, she's also one of country music's great all-time jokers - the ferociously funny queen of cornpone. (Sorry, Reba, but you're a joke. Comparatively speaking, of course.)
Dolly's always saying the darndest things, which is one of the many reasons she's such a treat to interview.
So, let Dave McKenna review Dolly's music, which was mostly quite good - though I can't say I liked the bizarre medley of '50s and '60s covers that served as a showcase for the band. Also didn't like missing the first quarter of the show - including "Jolene" - while stuck in traffic in the mess of a Patriot Center parking lot. (At least I made it in time to hear Dolly cracking a joke about horny Baptists before performing "Coat of Many Colors.")
This is all about last night's stage banter. Let's go to the quote sheet.
On acid reflux and her advancing age: "You know you're growing older when you go from taking acid to taking antacid."
On her retirement plans: "I hope I drop dead right in the middle of a song ... when I'm 103. Maybe the year after next."
On cosmetic surgery: "I've told you before: If I see something draggin', baggin' or saggin', I'm gonna have it nipped, tucked or sucked."
On performing on Cas Walker's "Farm and Home Hour" show in the early days of her career: "I was singin' on television before we even owned one."
On her husband of 41 years, Carl Dean: "We met at the Wishy Washy Laundromat - and it's been wishy-washy ever since."
On said stage banter: "I hope I haven't offended anybody tonight with all my goofiness. But if I have offended you, all I can say is: Tough!"
