Virgin Festival Rumor of the Day -- Bob Dylan?

"How does it feel? To still not know the VMoFest lineup?"

In this new media world you can't always rely on traditional sources. Sometimes you have to wade through back channels to get good info. In D.C. that means keeping tabs on the 9:30 Club forum, which in between indie snob oneupmanship and bickering about ... well, everything ... you'll sometimes find an interesting tidbit or two.

Something caught my eye in the Virgin Mobile Festival Rumor thread over the weekend. It was a post that simply said: "Bob Dylan. That's a fact."

Plenty of people post nonsense on the board (almost exclusively, really) but this one was intriguing for a few reasons. First, it's Bob Dylan. Say what you will about the quality of his performances these days - and our buddy Chris Richards said it all in his August 2006 review - I'm going to take notice. More important in this instance was the person who posted the info. This wasn't one of the usual forum loons but someone who has been registered for more than three years but had only 57 posts. He/she isn't posting just to see his name, er, handle (j-money), in lights. J-money only posts when there is something to say. Looking back at some old posts, he/she had Modest Mouse playing at last year's festival before they had been confirmed. As an amateur message board profiler, j-money's credibility might not be perfect, but it's enough to make you raise an eyebrow.

So that's how we land on today's rumor of the day. A VMoFest spokesperson declined to comment, for what it's worth. That's the great thing about message boards/the Internet/etc. People never decline to comment. Most of the time it's garbage ... but sometimes it's not.

Are you guys being properly compensated by Virgin Mobile?

Vince, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Viva la 9:30 Forum. Scooping out of the loop music journalists one hipster post at a time. Thanks for your time.

Much like a racetrack tout if you post enough info tips you are bound to hit something once in a while and get followers. Would like to see other posts by the same person on other boards to check on accuracy before annointing J-money as reliable.

Heck, the 930 club is probably leaking information under a phony name to give their board some credibility.

Bob Dylan is not going to save this Festival. He's played in this area multiple times per year since 2000 and previous. He'll also be touring at the same time, so rabid Dylan fans may hold out for a road trip to see him play in front of 5,000 max and be spared Jack Johnson and Stone Temple Pilots. Do you think he's going to break out with a greatest hits show to light up the place like the Who or the Police? Senor, Tales of Yankee Power, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carol, and Ramona made unrecognizable will more likely fill the set list. Not the sort of party tunes that Stone Temple Pilot and Jack Johnson fans want to hear after a day of hard drugs and hacky sack. The bikers, farmers, and FloMaxers at Dylan's Bowie and Frederick stadium shows were spent after a day of Willie Nelson, Junior Brown and Jimmie Vaughn.

ballsey, yet appropriate, to call the 9:30 board members what they really are: bickering snobs....

I think the chances of Bob Dylan playing are slim....Jakob Dylan, though? Maaayybee.

i saw Chuck Berry too somewhere (his website) it sounded like he will be there.

Chuck would be cool to see rocking out on ,most likely a side stage.

Seen Dylan several times since 19and89.
More than half he was awful, but a few times he was great.

I cannot, and hopefullt will not, see him at the Virgin. i know its kinda diverse, but i just don't see him fitting in. Like someone said he's not The Who. I think Dylan would bore the life out of me there.
