Please Explain to Me ... Girl Talk

He has no idea what Ian Snell's problem is.

Girl Talk is Gregg Gillis, a fine lad from Pittsburgh who can often be seen sporting a Pirates cap. (See right, go Bucs!) He's also one of the hottest names on the indie circuit thanks to his mashups that the kids just go crazy for. It's a phenomenon that's lost on me. I absolutely understand that it takes skill and precision to take little bits of many songs and turn it into something new. I just don't understand the point.

In last year's Virgin Festival blog I wrote: Girl Talk seems custom made for today's short attention span society, throwing almost a hundred recognizable songs into his set ... Sure, it's entertaining to hear a mashup of Lil' Mama's summer hit "Lip Gloss" and Neutral Milk Hotel's "Holland, 1945" but that's about all you can say for it. Every time the crowd recognized a song -- hey, it's "Whoomp (There It Is), I remember that one! -- a cheer went up. It's perfect for a party atmosphere and so it worked just fine today, but this pony certainly seems to have just one trick.

This is a special edition of Please Explain to Me because I can ask actually Gillis himself to explain. And so can you. He will be chatting at 3 p.m. Yes, J. Freedom will be his opening act. Maybe he can take bits and pieces of J. Freedom's responses and turn it into his own high-energy chat! So get all your work done now because you have lots of chatting to do this afternoon.
