Lupe on a Beautiful Day
"Can I get a wired microphone? Like, a microphone with a wire in it?"
It's never a good sign when you have to ask that during a set, but Lupe Fiasco's mic is not cooperating, cutting out for about every other word. For some acts this wouldn't be so bad but for one of the more gifted up-and-coming rappers it's the worst thing that can happen in a set. So we get an unexpected five-minute break. Some dude yells out for "Freebird." (2:53 p.m. for the score keepers.) Lupe asks, "How you doing, V-Fest?" He'll surely get an earful from a festival PR person for excluding "Mobile."
The technical issues are sorted out by the time he gets to "Superstar," which like the rest of the set is presented in a rocked-up version thanks to his four-piece backing band. Even better is "Daydreamin'" on which Lupe outdoes Gogol's Eugene Hutz when it comes to full-body contortions while on the mic. He leaves the stage to well-deserved chants of "Lu-pe! Lu-pe!"
