Virgin Festival Preview: Moby

(Programming Reminder: Post Rock will be blogging LIVE from Virgin Mobile Festival all weekend. Check in often on Saturday and Sunday for updates.)

Last night a DJ saved my life.

Actually, he answered my email while I was at the Jonas Brothers concert in Baltimore, but as there's no well-known lyric about a DJ answering my email, well ...

Anyway, Moby is doing a DJ set at Pimlico, so I asked him how he constructs his sets - whether there's a lot of advance planning, or if they're mostly improvised.

He wrote: "One of the things that I love about DJing is that it's almost all improvised. I might think of a few tracks I want to play beforehand, but everything is pretty much made up on the spot."

And how much does he change his sets based on the crowd and setting?

"Almost completely. If I'm playing to some of my friends at a house party I'll play Guns N' Roses and Donna Summer, but if I'm playing to 20,000 people at a German rave, I'll play big, new upfront electro tracks. So the music selection is almost completely dependent upon the context."

Moby will be in the dance tent from 6:30 to 8 on Sunday night.
