One of my favorite entries in "The New Book of Rock Lists" was "100 New Dylans" by Greil Marcus.
I was thinking about that last night, not because of the Malitz review of the latest entry in Dylan's bootleg series, but because of Nikka Costa, who, as retro-soul singing white girl, is getting a lot of Amy Winehouse comps these days. (That Costa was once produced by Mark Ronson only adds to the narrative, such as it is.)
Though Costa was doing the vintage-soul thing long before Winehouse became a worldwide sensation, she is, as I wrote in this "Pebble to a Pearl" review, the latest in an ever-lengthening line of artists to be compared to La Winehouse.
In case Marcus and Dave Marsh ever decide to update that book and do a list of New Amy Winehouses, here are a few headlines I found via Google:
