Chasing Amy

Maybe Amy Winehouse is the next Nikka Costa. Ever think of that?

One of my favorite entries in "The New Book of Rock Lists" was "100 New Dylans" by Greil Marcus.

I was thinking about that last night, not because of the Malitz review of the latest entry in Dylan's bootleg series, but because of Nikka Costa, who, as retro-soul singing white girl, is getting a lot of Amy Winehouse comps these days. (That Costa was once produced by Mark Ronson only adds to the narrative, such as it is.)

Though Costa was doing the vintage-soul thing long before Winehouse became a worldwide sensation, she is, as I wrote in this "Pebble to a Pearl" review, the latest in an ever-lengthening line of artists to be compared to La Winehouse.

In case Marcus and Dave Marsh ever decide to update that book and do a list of New Amy Winehouses, here are a few headlines I found via Google:

"Is Duffy the Next Amy Winehouse?"

"Is Gabriella Cilmi the new Amy Winehouse?"

"Lee Hyori is Amy Winehouse Wannabe?"

"NEXT AMY WINEHOUSE? The British press adore Adele. But will you?"

"Is Dirty Harry the Next Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen?"

I especially liked this one: "Is Tom Jones the next Amy Winehouse?" (The link doesn't take you to the full story, so try clicking here.)

Maybe if Amy Winehouse gets her act together, she can be the next Amy Winehouse.

Janet Jackson is in danger of becoming the next Amy Winehouse. In a bad way, of course.
