Live Last Night: Janet Jackson

millerlite'What have I done for you lately?'(Marvin Joseph/TWP)

Another Janet concert, another no-show. Only this time, it was opening act LL Cool J who was inexplicably absent. Don't call it a comeback? Okay, LL, I won't.

Last night at Verizon Center, Janet returned to the stage for the first time since a Sept. 28 concert in Toronto; in the two weeks since, she's postponed nine shows due to a mystery illness. Her reps finally explained this week that she'd been suffering from migraines that created the sensation of vertigo.

I'm working up a full review for tomorrow's Friday's Style section, but my quick take is that Jackson seemed sort of listless and lethargic during some stretches of the show - particularly in the first half of a set that ran for nearly two-and-a-half hours. Otherwise, you wouldn't have known that the 42-year-old performer was returning to the stage after a string of postponements, as she barely acknowledged her extended absence.

It was a bizarrely conceived concert with a mish-mash of themes - "Star Wars" and S&M among them - and it featured no fewer than nine costumes for Janet ("Miss Cascading Mohawk That Looked Like A Black Pomeranian Atop Her Head," if you're nasty).

From a musical standpoint, though, the show was generous, so long as one overlooked the fact that Jackson did quite a bit of lip-synching and that the band consisted of a drummer, a keyboardist and a guy who alternated between bass, keyboards and what looked like a laptop. Where were those guitars, horns, rhythmic fills and background vocals coming from? Hmmm.

The set included at least parts of 37 songs from Jackson's catalogue, dating all the way back to her self-titled 1982 debut, from which she performed "Young Love" and "Say You Do" as part of a medley. (She was big on the medleys last night, even opening with one from the "Control" era.)

She covered just about all of her hits, the best of which featured rich melodies that made her newer, more tuneless material (such as "So Excited") seem all the less appealing. Remember when it was okay for artists to hold dual citizenship in the Rhythm Nation and the Melody Nation? Those were the days.

Anyway: Were you there last night? What'd you think? Post your reviews in the comments section.

And please, can somebody explain to me what was up with Janet's wardrobe? One of my colleagues - a lifelong Janet devotee - texted me mid-show, wondering if Jackson had broken into Kristi Yamaguchi's closet and stolen all of her "Dancing With the Stars" outfits. He didn't mean that in a good way, either.

(More pics after the jump.)

I knew you'd be hating on Janet, since you always do ...

Don't listen to this dude - the show was absolutely amazing and was for her FANS! Not hating "journalists."

One of the best shows I've seen in ages.

Posted by: Here you go ... | October 16, 2008 10:30 AM

Right - I hate on her all the time ... except for when I don't, as with this review of "20 Y.O." Unless you think the headline - "Janet Jackson, Back in Fine Form" - somehow suggests that the review is just one big serving of haterade.

High energy, playing all of the songs that fans would long to hear and she seemed genuinely happy to be back on stage and appreciative for the audiences "Feedback." I had a very good time. Do want to know more about why LL left us S.O.L.

Posted by: Agreed | October 16, 2008 10:37 AM

Dude whatever ... most of what you write about her is not complimentary.

Next right back to you, homie. We're done.

Posted by: Here you go ... | October 16, 2008 10:38 AM

Janet was fantastic, as always! I absolutely loved the show. 2 thumbs up!!!

Posted by: Mike | October 16, 2008 10:50 AM

It was her best show ever.
High energy, over the top -- simply designed for the TRUE JANET fan.

Of course she is going to have to do a bunch of medleys...if she didn't we would be there for about 4 hours. Also, I don't think Janet has ever denied the fact that she doesn't sing live all the time. I mean who can do all of that singing, and dancing and still sound good? Can you?

Posted by: Jan Fan | October 16, 2008 10:59 AM

Janet was amazing last night. Very few musicians put on that kind of high engergy show anymore. It far exceeded my expectations.

Posted by: Stacy | October 16, 2008 11:00 AM

Awesome Show!!

Posted by: John | October 16, 2008 11:23 AM

I think this guy wishes he can do what Janet does at 42. I went to Chicago to see her and she put one hell of a show. Man give Janet a f@#*ing break she got sick just like most normal people do and she returned.

Posted by: Diego | October 16, 2008 11:24 AM

I enjoyed the show. This is my first Janet concert and I was expecting and amazing set and a zillion dancers based upon the concerts I've seen on DVD and HBO in the past. The set was nice but kind of bare bones compared to what I had seen before and there were not as many dancers. The costumes were kind of odd...what was up with all the shoulderpads in each one? I didn't get the whole theme of the show nor the ending with someone dragging her off screaming No No like someone was attacking her. As usual her routine of pulling a guy from the audience to seduce was fun. She rubbed his crotch, had him in some harness contraption which flipped him horizontal and she laid beneath him and had him lowered on top of her at which point she nuzzled his face in her ample boobage. The crowd roared. The 'kids' were out in full effect last night loving every minute of Miss Janet if not her chiselled dancers just as much....I'm sure they gave her 3 snaps in the air. I can only imagine what a Madonna concert must be the 'kids' love some dance music. Some of their ensembles and hairdos were more interesting than Janet's. Jermaine Dupri walked past my area on the floor (using crutches) and sat near the sound guys and a lil lounge area for VIPs in the middle of the floor. He is just as teeny as I remember from prior Howard U. Homecoming parties I've seen him at. Janet did seem to hold back just a lil on the dancing but she did give us all our fav dance moves from the videos and we were all in the audience trying our best to remember them and keep up. I was disappointed that LL Cool J was not there. They had a DJ play until she came out. Luckily I was late so I wasn't too peeved as I didn't have long to wait...she came on about 9pm or so. Longtime fans loved that she took it back to her first few lessor known albums as a teenager from the DreamStreet days. She said this was a response to those who complained she never did these in concert. Lots of cool effects like fire and cannons and smoke and pyrotechnics. I liked that she had a sort of runway extend out from the stage into the crowd as it brought her and her dancers closer to the floor section crowd that were in the middle of the floor. I lost 3 lbs from dancing nonstop the whole night. Haven't loved her last few albums but loved this concert...she has a lifetime of great material for fans to enjoy to overshadow the last few bombs!

Posted by: LadyLaw | October 16, 2008 11:26 AM

She was very good, and really kept up the energy and momentum. To be fair, we were clearly a forgiving audience (just happy that the damn show wasn't cancelled.) I will say this, Jackson really needs to mix up her steps and choreography. She risks becoming a nostalgia act (if she isn't one already.) Madonna always tries something new, some new moves, a new musical take, on her old songs. Janet just sings her songs, dances her steps and smiles. She does this well...but it doesn't move her and the audience forward.

Posted by: Aaron | October 16, 2008 11:27 AM

i loved the show ...

Posted by: Anonymous | October 16, 2008 11:32 AM

How does Madonna innovate when she has the staples of political breaks in each shows, flipping the bird or swearing at her audience, and just doing the same thing she does every show, with different costumes?

I like them both, I've seen Madonna, and this was my first Janet show last night. Janet is an icon who delivered probably her finest show, a mixture of classic and new. Personally, I loved the new outfits and overall feel of the show. People continue to try to marginalize Janet, whether it is because she is black, a Jackson, or whatever remains to be seen. But all those cheering folks can't be wrong.

Great show Janet.

I enjoyed the show. High energy! Kept me on my feet. Good Job Janet!!!

Posted by: Kesha | October 16, 2008 11:56 AM

For the boys and girls that went to hear an see Janet it was perfect, you have to remember, for some folks she's an icon, and your not going to affect them, as Madonna.

However, i felt very sorry for her performance, she should have cancelled the entire tour, and went home, and relaxed, she can afford it, and she's plenty rich, especially with that extra rich boyfriend. I also place some blame on him as well, if you love and care for your woman, you fight and make her slow down and tell her the truth especially if it involves life or death.

I never thought i would see Janet big, plump, but she didn't look like Janet of old, and yes i realize she's 42, but there are still beautiful performers in their 40 and 50's. She did not look healthy at all, and i say this with love, I wished i were a friend, i would have pulled her to the side and said Janet, lets go home.

This was like watching a boxer who you know should retire but continues to get pummeled, and doesn't want to realize its over or to take some time off to get your body and mind back into shape.

I love Janet, from Good Times to Rythum Nation, but now i find myself feeling sorry for her.

Posted by: Frank | October 16, 2008 12:38 PM

Wow, that is one bizarre looking show. Where'd she get the outfits, a canceled Mad Max sequel?

A show that's mostly lip-synching. Who does she think she is, Britney Spears?

Posted by: EircS | October 16, 2008 12:38 PM

High fashion is not something that can anyone understand or love. Janet's wardrobe is VERSACE!!! And she looks great!

Posted by: Nikola | October 16, 2008 12:46 PM

Great show! Her best to date and all others were fantastic! I really love this woman! She the Queen!

Posted by: Joshua | October 16, 2008 12:49 PM

That's right Nikola, outfits for the show are VERSACE! And for those who expected average show, well it's Janet. She is doing differently and like someone said it's not for anyone it's for those who knows what ART is!

Posted by: LL | October 16, 2008 12:51 PM

As I told the reporter last night, she was awesome, I've seen several concerts in the past two years and I can say this one took me over the top. I've waited 7 yrs for this and it was well worth the wait; whereas I paid 120.00 to see umm that getting sued for everything she touch Beyonce, I felt she still owed me 60.00, now I received every penny for the 140.00 I spent to see Janet.

Posted by: Maurice | October 16, 2008 1:06 PM

I've been to all of Janet's concerts and it's no exaggeration to say that the Rockwitchu Tour is her BEST, right along with the Velvet Rope show . Sure, Janet's a little thicker. Didn't mind that... that's attractive. And sure, Janet's got a mohawk. So what? See the show. And I bet you dollar to doughnuts, all those criticisms that you read in this blog, won't matter. Enjoy!

Posted by: CDawg | October 16, 2008 1:09 PM

Great show! Very high energy, great dancing, awesome mix of songs that we all wanted to hear.

The hair is a little weird, wish she didn't have the mo-hawk and only Janet can pull off those outfits. She looked GREAT though.

Sound wasn't that great. And couldn't understand barely what she said when she spoke to us. That was a bit disappointing.

And the S&M routine was very bizarre... and the sets, well, they just seemed bare-bones 80s-style.

Overall, though, fantastic! Funny to hear people comment on Madonna b/c I wondered if they'd be comparable.

Thanks, Janet and fans for coming out last night!!

Posted by: cherylw | October 16, 2008 1:12 PM

@ Frank.

obviously Janet still got your attention, because you still paid to see her. looks like YOU'RE the one who's sorry.

Posted by: David | October 16, 2008 1:14 PM

Janet kicked MAJOR ass last night. Most definitely put madonna's circus to shame. janet put on a SHOW, without using controversy, a million dancers, and cheap stage theatrics to "entertain" the audience. she danced NON STOP for over 2 hours just as hard, if not harder, than the dancers who are half her age. madonna wishes she had that kind of stamina.

Posted by: David | October 16, 2008 1:18 PM

I wasn't at the show last night but I am certainly dying to see her perform in NJ tommorow night!! I did hear from many people that the show in DC was amazing!! I don't agree with this article at all..... you must not like Janet to begin with.

Posted by: luvjdjj | October 16, 2008 1:29 PM

True or False: Fans of musical artists are the most forgiving because they attribute many happy things to the artist or their music.

Posted by: Steve | October 16, 2008 1:48 PM

RE: Janet's band

The "entertainment" at my high school prom was a guy who played the drums and sang along to compact discs. I'm totally serious.

Posted by: Gary | October 16, 2008 1:54 PM

The writer of this article does hate on Janet, can't believe he tried to lie about it. Search this site and Google him. If she's not your thing just come out say it. There's nothing wrong with it, Janet isn't everybody's cup a tea. As for the concert, it was very good.

I could tell she was coming off being sick, but it was still fantastic none the less. She hit all the great songs and the section I was in was dancing from start to finish even on the slow jams. For the other cities you'll be in for treat as her health improves and she get her stamina back.

Frank I feel sorry for you dude, Janet has always fluctuated in size through the years and she looked good last night. I would hardly call Janet big and plump. She looked the same size as she was in "Why Did I Get Married?" Janet's got back for days and that's how we like our women! Stay this size Janet!!!!!

If you want to see Madonna who looks like the crypt keeper from Tales From the Crypt, fine that's on you. Now that's one person whose time has passed her by. Saw her in a video with Justin Timberlake a couple years back trying to put on her cougar act, yuck!

Posted by: Black Cat | October 16, 2008 2:05 PM

This concert is about her fans. It was clear from the moment when Janet hit the stage solo. For me it took me back to the 12 year old girl in 1982 jumping up and down sreaming Young Love. As a die hard Janet Jackson fan it was the best of her concerts for me. Yes it lacked the elaborate set and costumes. This was an opportunity for Janet to give her fan just what they asked for...almost 3 hours of the songs they wanted to hear. I truly appreciated every moment of the journey back in time.

Posted by: Carmen | October 16, 2008 2:12 PM

The show was great very high energy, and Janet sound great. Who ever wrote this article is clearly upset with Janet about something. Maybe because he didnt get pull on stage last night or maybe he was just at the wrong show. Janet Great show continue doing what you are doing.

Posted by: JAY | October 16, 2008 2:13 PM

The show was absolutely fantastic! I really enjoyed it and so did crowd. The show was stripped down in terms of less dancers, less decorations on the stage. But that was good! Her DC performance got me to buy a ticket to her Madison Square Garden concert on 11/1/08!

Posted by: Mr. Johnson | October 16, 2008 2:24 PM

I've been to all of Janet's tours and never cease to amaze me at the range of folks that show up. White, Black, Asian, Latino, straight, gay, were in attendance last night. We all had a good time, in my section we were really moving to every song she sang. It was cool to see the younger folks enjoying her older stuff, the stuff I grew up on and then hearing her new stuff that the young folks really got off on. My wife and I have to get her newer stuff as work and life has caught up with us. :-(

I wish she could do another show in DC, I won't be able to make the NY show, but New Yorkers' you're in for a real treat.

Posted by: Bernie | October 16, 2008 2:49 PM

Ay Freedom,
Reading these "How DARE you write a review of Janet Jackson that doesnt say shes a GOD" posts reminds me of something Eddie Murphy said- "Ill be walking down the street and people in cars be rolling down their windows and saying, "YO! EDDIE MURPHY! YOU CANT BE MAKING FUN OF STEVIE WONDER ON NO SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE! HES A GENIUS!!!WHAT SONG YOU EVER WROTE HUH!!"
Take a stresstab people, I love JJs old stuff but I thought going to a LIVE show means, uh, live singing, music from a band thats actually playing it- ya feel me here?

Posted by: fred | October 16, 2008 3:04 PM

The two of you confirmed what i said, she has true hardcore fans, and you all will defend her, and that is fine and i respect it.

However, I stand my ground, she needs to quit the tour, and go home and relax, work out, get some yoga going. Just find a peaceful place.

As for the person that says, who does she think she is Britney Spears, please, Britney couldn't touch Janet with the longest pole, actually, does anyone remember the show Michael Jackson did w/Elizabeth Taylor, as they sat on the side of the stage, and Britney came out and sang, Michael set her up and showed America, Britney was a tech voice, if she didn't have the machine behind her, she was dead. I clearly remember how awful she sounded.

By the way, i didn't pay for the show, but i was there, as for you hardcore fans, i said i respect you, but i see you had to go with insults, so be it, grow up, be mature, and see the reality of Janet hurting.

Good day!

Posted by: Frank | October 16, 2008 3:14 PM

I've watched both Madonna's and Janet's shows (courtesy of YouTube) and while I am a fan of both, Janet appears to have the better show for the dollar.

While Madonna can be lauded for her vision and creativity, its NOT apparent on her latest road show.

With respect to the lip-synching issue, I REALLY wish all journalists would LET IT GO. All performers that stage massive shows do it to some extent. It's an accepted industry convention. If you don't like it, then simply don't see those shows but it does not invalidate the performance. I like all kinds of musical performance and honestly, this has never been an issue.

The bottom line is whether ticket buyers were entertained. And I think in the case of Janet's latest outing, the answer is a resounding "GOOD GOD, YES!"

Posted by: keith | October 16, 2008 3:15 PM

The show was outstanding I really enjoyed every single bit of it. Freak me out when she went way back to Young Love, Don't Stand Another Chance, Say You Do LOL. I love it . " Funny How Times Flies" I believe she has never performed that live on any tour if I'm not mistaking. Anyway the show was off tha hook. It was certainly worth $$$$ put out for tickets.

I think the crowd didn't even care that LL wasn't there after Janet took the stage.

Posted by: Ray | October 16, 2008 3:28 PM

I was there last night- I too wonder about LLCoolJ - was he missing because he couldn't count on Janet to on with the show? I did enjoy myself! But I actually agree that she did gain a bit more energy by the second half of the show. I am not yet 40 so this isn't an insult, but maybe Janet should also consider a standing run in Vegas (with Michael alternating nights??) to finish out her career - the Vegas where people just want to hear old hits and the new stuff..well, not so much.

Posted by: SW DC | October 16, 2008 4:00 PM

The Janet show was awesome. I did note that she lip-synched probably more than she sang live but given her recent illness, I didn't have a problem with it. As for the dress changes- I had no problem with that either. I think it would have been boring if she had stuck to a few items. Besides, the costume changes were reflective of the music that she has done over the past 20 years! Also her dancers are awesome- they like Janet are not exactly youngsters, yet everyone is lithe and can move around like it is no one's business.

I'll never forget when she came to our high school(Calvin Coolidge in DC)- that was in 1984 before she hit it big musically with "Control". She was promoting the "Young Love" record back then.

Posted by: plamar1031 | October 16, 2008 4:51 PM

well i haven't seen the show yet, i'll see it 2morrow. i just had to comment on the lyp-synching thing. anyone who puts on a show like this does it. celine dion did it in her vegas show, she used backup tracks and so do many other artists, it's part of the biz. besides, you don't really go to a janet show to hear her sing the whole show live, and the other thing you forget is- this is what she does for a living. she's trained to do this, she didn't just get up yesterday and decide to do a song and dance show. just because she can't wail like beyonce and christina doesn't mean she cant sing live. i've watched some of the clips on youtube and from what i can tell, being a singer dancer myself, she's doing more singing than not. i haven't seen the whole thing yet but once again, who cares? you are going to her concert to see a production and that's what you get.

as far as the concept, costumes, set, and lack of band- once again- why do you care how the music is there as long as it is and it doesn't sound like she's playing a cd- which it doesn't. i accept that you have an opinion as we all do- but i've dealt with critics for much of my career and many enjoy the position they've been given by using their words in a negative way. which is terrible given that most of you don't have to pay to see the show! here's my suggestion after reading your review- go read the review that VARIETY wrote on her show in L.A. a review written by someone who actually works for a publication dedicated to the arts and entertainment. that might give you some pointers on how to write a review without putting your personal feelings into it. give it a shot. you might learn a thing or two.

Posted by: james h | October 16, 2008 5:28 PM

you did succeed in one thing- you got people to respond. interestingly not all in agreement with you.

Posted by: james h | October 16, 2008 5:30 PM

LMAO!!! I agree with the ENTIRE article! THATS WHAT YOU FOR NOT LISTENING TO YOUR ((((((BETTER)))))) FANS!!! Who are NO LONGER YOUR FANS!! After AFY you lost 6.5mil fans and you are left with less than 0.42 mil fans (worldwide). OOPS! Did you really think your good fans would hang around after the way you treated them? Did you really think people would enjoy this pathectic show and become NEW fans?? Were you sober when thinking that? ITS A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE show. You didnt care about what the fans had to say to you, you just went ahead and did what you wanted to. We told you JD was a no no. We told you no more sex songs. Now we telling you to go back to Rene (if he will take you back) I mean Im so sick to death with your REBELIOUS behaviour. The fact you want a child with a man who gave you 3 flops in a row instead of the man who helped you sell 51mil WORLDWIDE in TOTAL! is just plain crazy. Rene is MUCH MUCH BETTER than that floppy fake ass wannabe. But go ahead continue to ruin your life career and whatever else you have left to lose. JD is a THEF he STEALS songs from other people, the industry KNOWS this. Thats why he flops so much. And you want to present him better than Rene after ALL the success you had with Rene? I can see why you cant sleep at night. Regret and sorrow. Everything you do is out of hate and at the top of that hatred list is Rene's name. Janet. You need Jesus. And Im being VERY VERY SERIOUS. Flip the channel to the Christian Channel it WILL help you. God bless. God save. And God keep. Amen amen and amen.

Her forums pressure you to be gay. They wanted me to be gay. And here is my answer I LL NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER be gay. Not for Janet the sleezy dirty crazy Jackson not for anyone. I am Gods Royal BELOVED DAUGHTER! Not some worthless wretched miserable gender confused gay person like they wanted me to be.

Posted by: TRUEDREAMS!! | October 16, 2008 7:33 PM

Saw the show in L.A. I liked the bare stage (band on the side). It left more room for dancing. I wouldn't be surprised if more artists did this. I thought the lead vocals were live, which is the important part. Reviewers need to get over this aspect regarding R&B/dance artists. I've seen Rock artists lip synch. And the media never mentions this.

Posted by: Ronnie | October 16, 2008 8:39 PM

I attended the show last night and also left a comment earlier. Janet did a good portion of the show live, and had a backing track for more the aggressive numbers.

Her ballad and grooves were totally live, why is this not mentioned? Meh, people hate, but the quality of this show cannot be denied.-QH

Posted by: QH | October 16, 2008 9:07 PM

The show was awesome! If you have the opportunity, you don't want to miss it.

Posted by: TH | October 16, 2008 11:11 PM

Dear J. Freedom (or whatever your name is)

I believe I speak for all janet fans when I ask you to please never attend a janet show again. it's apparent that you already knew you were going to hate even before you set foot in the arena. and considering your only criticisms were that you didnt like her hair(high quality journalism right there lol), the show must be pretty damn good. Oh, and name me one artist that dances as aggresively onstage as Miss Jackson? She sings LIVE on the slow songs and has backing on the faster, dance-oriented ones. there's a reason youre reviewing concerts and not writing anything hard-hitting, bruh. you need to step your game up on so many levels.

Posted by: tyler | October 17, 2008 12:10 AM

this is a concert...she wasnt attending church. why are you judging the fact that the show (her hair included) was different. had it not been, you would've said the show was boring. your hate is so transparent.

Posted by: hLUV | October 17, 2008 12:25 AM

LOL Truedreams you are insane, I remember you from the JJforum in the all for you era. You were in deed "gay" online..does the name TAZ ring a bell?..maybe it was pressure idk lol. Then you "repented" and told everyone gay they were going to hell Anyway, the show is awesome, amazing, definitely worth the money.

Posted by: RudeB | October 17, 2008 1:17 AM

Hi energy very good show. Also, stayed on stage just over 2 hours!! Could have been a great show if L.L. would have performed, as promised. Instead, the show started late, then they had a DJ who was very good for 25 minutes then we had an "intermission" for another 40 minutes.....???? Nothing to replace the opening act of L.L. Not how you treat fans who paid top dollar.

Posted by: Larry | October 17, 2008 3:26 AM

The show rocks... The Queen is back!!!!

Posted by: Nano | October 17, 2008 6:32 AM

Wow I can't believe this loser is on here trying to defend himself. If you really believe in what you write you'd post the article and leave it at that.

Posted by: Truth | October 17, 2008 7:30 AM

Why O Why do people try to find fault in others? Janet was great. Even though I was in the rafters I still loved the councert. I especially loved it when she paid homage to her earlier album. I had some around me saying "What song is this?" "I have never heard of this one?" and "Is this something from a new album she is working on?" It really made me feel old but none the less a die hard Janet fan. When I asked how old they were I was told 19, 20, and 23. I told them that these songs were out before they were born. You should have seen the shock on their faces. I loved it.

Janet was awesome and as far as the lip synching, who cares. janet is Janet and there is no other.

Posted by: JJ for Janet | October 17, 2008 9:57 AM

Love all the hate generated by the awsome show that janet put on wedensday night!!!! She is unbelieveable in concert and did not i repeat DID NOT FAIL TO DELIVER!!! There is a reason that she is an ICON and considered the greatest female entertainer alive! the show was pure energy and she sooooooo did NOT lip-sync I dont know what concert this man was at because you could clearly hear her SINGING LIVE. People like the person who wrote this article and the lurking lamb truedreams lets you know right there this show was DA SH*T because they cant help but to go out of thier way to HATE! its cool though when you diss her it just lets her know shes on your minds as JD would say lol. Wow. Looks like the person who wrote the review has no appreciation for art and his music collection consists of Wham and Vanilla Ice. I thought Journalism was supposed to be unbiased. I guess someone needs a refresher course in Journalism 101.

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS!- so guess what? this "freedom" guy wrote another, more scathing review on the concert and put it in a different section of todays "paper", you have to check the music section of this "paper" under the title "JANET, BACK WITCHU AGAIN". if you think this is bad just wait. i think he was fueled by how much we disliked his "skills" that he wrote another in a section where you CAN'T comment.

COWARD! though i'm very confused by your obsession with janet jackson that you spent that much energy writing 2 reviews. you must not get many other assingments.

CORRECTION: you can post but you have to log in to do so. once again, i call you a coward. but- you definitely are enjoying the negativity that you are receiving. i must say what a sad state that must be. if you try, you may write something positive one day and see what it feels like to receive good energy and learn how to share that.

one last thing: i THINK that those post are moderated, so they may only put up the ones that support the "critics' views. i'm not positive on that, but it's what i feel.

Sweet, flame war!

Apparently most of you forget the role of a critic is to critique a performance. Free did and found it very lacking. Lip-synching means you can't do it alone. If you can't do your live show without the computers doing it for you, well, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

What's the point of charging people of a live show if it's totally canned? That's called a rip-off and I don't care if it's Janet Jackson or Motley Crue. Sing live or go home.

Oh, and that's not "fashion". It's just creepy stage costumes. BTW Frank, my crack about her being Britney was a joke, but it is entirely apt since neither of them sing live.

There was a time when you went to see a live show and the music sounded BETTER live than it did on the album.

Until musical artists realize that if you made your fame as a VOCALIST, you are expected to actually SING at your own concert.

I don't pay to see a music video come to life on stage

For the record, I saw Janet with the Jackson 5 when I was 8 back in 1976. Back when she was doing her Mae West imitation...

The Janet SHOW was WONDERFUL! Im glad you wrote this article because you have don nothing more put increase conversations of JANET! BAD PRESS IS BETTER THAN NO PRESS...(get into it) also, you seem somewhat pressured to write... did you need to pay your rent or something? cause to post an article twice means that you are underpressure... listen to JANET AND ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know what the role of a critic is and this critic is not fulfilling his duties. if you have a personal issue with an artist don't use your job as your platform to broadcast it. part of being a journalist is to not be biased and this one clearly is. period.

i saw the show last night and while it was not a perfect show- it was a wonderful show, if a bit too long. janet does one thing that few of these other performers do- she gives from the heart. you have to see her in action to understand that. it's not solely about the adoration and the screams, she's on that stage because she loves it and loves her fans. the other stuff is a by product that is rightly deserved. too see someone perform like that no matter how many tickets were or weren't sold, speaks volumes to me of who they are as an artist.

screw the vocals- she did alot of the show live and she sang well. canned vocals have always been and always will be. screw the costumes- though they were quite fun and that red dress is stunning- it's part of the concept and you can't judge the show from seeing a photo. you gotta see it for yourself. i spent money to be entertained and watch someone give me every ounce of what they have- and that she did. she put her heart on the stage.

p.s.- canned vocals have not always been but they've been around for a long time and they aren't going anywhere.

Frank i respect your opinion to and i am a die hard fan. You really cant expect her to be thin all the time. Then if she were thin everyone would be saying she needs to matter what she does everyone has to complain.she's a human being like everyone else and she fluctuates with weight.BIG DEAL.why would you say she doesn't look healthy because she's a little thicker.I recently gained weight to and i was a toothpick, so does that mean that im not healthy either?

I don't know what the problem is. I saw Janet in Los Angeles and she was awesome and put on a wonderful show. I've been to 7 high-profile concerts this year from uber-talented artists (Alicia Keys, Madonna, Linkin Park, etc) and I must say Janet's show was the most enjoyable (and I'm not even as huge a fan as some of these other people). Even at 42, she worked the stage for 2+ hours!

And TRUEDREAMS!!, did someone forget to take their valium today?
