'Travelin' Soldier': Video of the Day

One of the greatest ironies of the Great Dixie Chicks Backlash of 2003 is that, at the time, the group had the No. 1 single on Billboard's Hot Country chart with a terrific tribute to an anonymous Vietnam vet, told through the eyes of a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair. You might even call it a (gasp) patriotic piece of music. But "Travelin' Soldier" swan-dived from the charts as a Dixie Chicks boycott went into effect.

So, to review: The group that was excommunicated from the church of country music for having had the temerity to pop off about President Bush and the war in Iraq was, at the time of the incident, riding high with a lovingly and gorgeously rendered love song about a fallen soldier. The song was never to be heard on country radio again. Hoorah.
