Virgin Festival Speculation: Blink, MPP, Free

The biggest festival of the summer is in the books and there's still no word on the Virgin Mobile Festival plans for 2009. Make that no official word.

The powers-that-be are still silent, but amateur detectives can piece things together pretty easily. People are holding out hope that this delay means something amazing is in store (Springsteen, McCartney AND Radiohead!!!); but the rumored reality is much less exciting.

This is all totally unconfirmed, of course, but expect the 2009 version of Virgin Mobile Festival to be based around a Blink-182/Weezer show at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Aug. 30. And expect it to be free.

Eliot (in the Morning) basically gave this info away a two weeks ago (The Upstate Life blogged about it then), but the story didn't gain too much traction. Maybe because bloggers aren't up that early, or people just couldn't get too excited about something involving Blink-182.

We've thought that the Blink/Weezer tour was going to be part of festival for a while based on the shenanigans that went on when that tour's dates were first announced. There was a D.C. date announced for Aug. 30, then it was taken down; now it's still not listed on Blink's itinerary, while Weezer simply lists the date as "DC - TBA."

As for it being free, well, Eliot wouldn't lie, would he? We asked a few people who are part of the very extended I.M.P. family about this rumor, and that was the same buzz they had heard, even if it was from second-hand production meetings.

No details on how ticket distribution would work, and an audible is always possible. As is the possibility that this is nothing more than a mere rumor. But if we were gambling men -- and our broken kneecaps say that we are -- this is what we're betting on.

Wait...are you saying Virgin Fest would be free this year after last year's $250 dollar prices??? Why would they do that?

If it's true, i'm expecting $50 hot dogs and $75 watered-down Miller Lites.

it's going to be free because we've all already spent our money on Lollapalooza and All Points West.
