God of War Returns to the PS2

Mike Musgrove

God of War II is out today...

For those of you who don't play video games, the original God of War was one of the best-reviewed and best-selling games for the PlayStation 2 a couple of years ago. It was about an angry Spartan warrior guy named Kratos in ancient Greece who likes to throw around a pair of swords attached to his wrists with chains. I could bore you with plot analysis, but it's probably enough just to say that the game was packed with lore plucked from ancient Greek mythology and featured lots of meddling gods and lots of nasty monsters.

After running around trying not to get squashed by an angry colossus in the new game's first "boss level" for 40 minutes or so, I'd say the sequel looks, sounds, plays and generally feels exactly the same as the first one -- which isn't a bad thing at all. So far, the trick to prevailing in the game's first big showdown seems to involve running up this giant's arm so you can stab his eye out. (Like the original, this is very much a Mature-rated game.) Good times.

It's nice to see that Sony is still putting out good games like this for the PS2, even though it is now busy trying to drum up gamer interest in the PS3. When Microsoft launched its follow-up to the original Xbox, by comparison, that company seemed to drop game development for its debut console rather abruptly.

But it's also a good business move to keep the world's PS2 owners happy. Lots of people own a PS2, and very few people own Sony's brand new console, after all. According to Sony, God of War II scored over a million pre-orders at game and electronics stores over the last few weeks.

Last I checked, by the way, the Best Buy near me -- one of the stores where people camped out for almost a week to get the PS3 last year -- had 12 of the consoles sitting around waiting for buyers.
