A Startup Hits Reality TV

Internet startups are back in the spotlight - and as proof, I point no further than reality television.

The up-and-coming MOJO Network - which is available on a number of cable TV systems - today announced plans for a new high-definition show called "Startup Junkies." Scheduled to premiere in January, the eight-episode series will focus around entrepreneur Ron Wiener, who founded a company called Earth Class Mail.

The show's producers say they hope it will be both educational and entertaining, offering an insider look at what it takes to develop an idea into a business and work with the challenges of fundraising and finding the talent needed to launch the business. One episode of the show, which is being produced by Screaming Flea Productions in Seattle, follows the ups and downs of fundraising activities, including a presentation by Wiener at an angel investor meeting.

"The pace of what we have to accomplish with a fraction of the resources available to corporate America is what makes being part of a start-up so exciting," Weiner said. "Serial entrepreneurs are addicted to that feeling of taking a mere idea and turning it into a highly profitable business. We agreed to do 'Start-up Junkies' to give others a sense of what it really takes to build a company from scratch."
