Wii Sales Catch Up To The Xbox 360

Mike Musgrove

According to a Web site that tracks this sort of thing, sales of the Nintendo Wii console have now edged past sales of the Microsoft Xbox 360.

According to VG Chartz, Wii sales across the globe are at 10.57 million, compared to 10.51 million for the Xbox 360. The Nintendo came out in 2006 -- a year after the Xbox 360 hit the market.

The site puts sales of the PlayStation 3 at 4.32 million.

I remember hearing that that site is not a great representation of the console sales. I cannot remember exactly why, but I believe it may be based on products that the companies have shipped and not necessarily products they have sold. While those would be closely related, it's not the same thing.

All I know is that whenever we have random conversations, like at Bumbershoot or a coffee shop, here in Seattle, it's always about the Wii that someone's brother got for his birthday and the fun party with four Wii-motes and some cool games.

Never hear anyone talking about xBox360 here in Seattle.

And if it's Sony, it's always about the PS2 games. Nobody ever talks about PS3 games.

If it's a matter of units shipped versus sold, than the Wii is crushing the competition. You can pick up a PS3 or XBox 360 anywhere, but I have been in consumer electronics outlets in seven states since the Wii came out and have never found one in stock.
