Skype Shows Sony Users It's Got Game

Users of Sony's mobile gaming gadget got a surprise treat among the announcements at the show. The game device, which already featured wireless Internet connectivity features, will now be able to double as a phone. PSP owners who start an account with the popular voice-over-Internet service Skype will be able to use the game system as a phone whenever logged onto the Web. The service will also require that owners plug a compatible headset into the device.

The feature is scheduled to become available later this month.
Sony says it sold 1.4 million units of the PSP during the recent holiday season; in the mobile gaming market, Sony's system has remained a distant number-two to Nintendo's "DS" game device. Skype claims 246 million users worldwide.
Alas, the Skype service will only be available for owners of the new, slimmed-down version of the PSP, released last year. The original, slightly chunkier version of the device will not support the service.
