Fallout 3 Hits Metro Center

Mike Musgrove

Don't get too freaked out, commuters: It's just a video game.

Local game studio Bethesda Softworks has blanketed the advertising space in downtown's Metro Center Metrorail station with some dark and kinda disturbing images of DC landmarks, such as a bombed-out-looking Capitol building and Washington Monument, lifted from its upcoming game title Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Washington in the year 2277 and will give players the thrill of fighting mutated monsters on the streets of downtown DC. (The underground transit system in Washington actually plays a part in the game, though I don't believe the game's design team used the actual lines we ride today in pre-apocalyptic 2008.)

For video game fans, it's one of the most-anticipated titles of the year. That's partly because the game's design team is the same one that was behind the blockbuster video game Oblivion, and partly because the upcoming title is a return to a well-loved computer game series that was popular a decade ago.

Fallout 3 is scheduled for release October 28. Next week, Bethesda Softworks is throwing a launch party for the game in Los Angeles, featuring a performance by the Foo Fighters.

With the market collapse and the impending election of Obama, I kind of thought the images are predicting the future.

I can't wait for this game. I saw the ads yesterday and was thinking to myself how entertaining the pitch must have been to the MTA.

Posted by: Eman | October 8, 2008 4:09 PM

I live/work in DC. I'm going to buy the game. The developer is based in Bethesda. The game is set in/around DC.

The party is in LA.

This. Makes. No. Sense.

Posted by: Greg4408 | October 8, 2008 5:12 PM

wait there's a prty in L.A. involving this game ... why wasn't I informed?

Posted by: Father Time | October 8, 2008 5:57 PM

WHAT IS THIS? ARE THEY SAYING THAT AMERICA IS GOING TO FALL? THIS LOOKS LIKE SOME TERRORIST STUFF TO ME.

Posted by: Richard | October 8, 2008 6:42 PM

I was a huge fan of Fallout 1 and 2 back in the mid-90s and I'm unbelievably excited about Fallout 3. I've already got my copy ordered, but was excited to see the great ads (don't forget the ads for wacky products, it's not all crumbling monuments, there's some funny stuff there too).

It's pretty disgusting that the only thing that entertains liberals these days are post-apocalyptic fantasies about a destroyed America and dead American patriots.

If this video "game" took place in San Fran you can bet all the lieberals would be up in arms about how it's not "politically correct".

Posted by: Bill | October 8, 2008 8:49 PM

i think very this is a stupid idea and it lets the terrorists win, compromising everything we believe in, just because of some stupid FarOut 3 game or something who wants that? why just so they can advertise? pshhh thats gay and i hope is everyone is boycotting this game like i wilL be doing.

Posted by: james | October 8, 2008 8:51 PM

HEY BILL... Life is not politically correct.

Also Fallout 2 did take place in California, specifically centered around San Fransisco.

Posted by: David | October 8, 2008 8:54 PM

In response to Bill:

The first Fallout took place in the radioactive wasteland of Southern California and LA Basin. The second in the series took place largely in Northern California and features a completely leveled San Francisco.

It's a shame we live in a day and age where things like violence and destruction in this country are considered "cool" and "hip". In the capitol no less! USA number one, forever.

Posted by: Bil B. Thumper | October 8, 2008 9:37 PM

Thanks for playing bill, now go drink your prune juice and take your blood pressure meds. Can you, in your hate filled angst, please tell us just what this has to do with liberals anyhow? It's fiction Bill, grow an imagination.
As some have already pointed out, the first two games in the series did take place in the ruins of California, so do some research before shoving your foot in your mouth.

We NMA Terrorists funded by Al-Qaida applaud the game and the message it carries.

OBAMA WANTS TO TAKE AWAY MY .223 PISTOL

For those posting negative comments:

Back to No Mutants Allowed and rpgcodex, now! I think I saw that james somewhere in the codex forums before.

Serious note:
The destruction is not by terrorism, it's but communism. In the game, the USA is warring with China. In 2077 (I think), China launched a barrage of nukes towards America. But don't worry, the USA levelled China with their own nuclear arsenal. So the whole world is irradiated and pretty much resemble the Old West, with slightly better technology (barring certain groups).

The game's 'message'. if you want, is exemplified by it's trademark line:

War. War never changes.

Basically, it has an anti-nuclear weapon philosophy.

Ahh, snap! Should proof read before posting.

Posted by: MSJ | October 9, 2008 12:14 AM

The responses (even though some of them are gamers having a dig) there are a couple of you out there who believe that this game is supporting terrorists.

Hold that thought for a second - it seems the nation requires an "enemy" of some description to continue to function as a whole. Before the terrorists (in the 1980s they were called freedom fighters) you had communists and before that it was someone else.

Always realise that games are games - all the kids doing the shootings - they were messed up BEFORE they played counter strike - are you looking for the real causes of your problems? Or just looking for a way to take out your minority frustration at things you see youself as having little power to change.

Looking at things from anothers perspective can often give one a small advantage - you should try it sometime before spraying beer and bagels at us.

As long as this game doesn't encourage unsafe driving I'm fine with it.

Posted by: Highwayman | October 9, 2008 1:25 AM

WHY DO THESE SO CALLED "GAME MAKERS" SUPPORT TERORIRISM (IM NOT SURE HOW TO SPELL IT)???? ITS SCARED ME AND MY FRIENDS. AND IT ADCOVATES TERRORIRISM. THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK FROWARD TO WITH BARACK HUSSEIN!!! OBAMA AS OUR PREDISENT. ALL OF THE MAJOR CITIES OR GOING TO BE NUKED LIKE IN THIS FAROUT GAME. PRAY TO GOD FOR OUR SOULS.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Posted by: jennifer | October 9, 2008 2:38 AM

This looks p.ghey tbh. like they just trying to b shockin to sell games. looks like a halo clone 2.

Posted by: Wippet | October 9, 2008 2:56 AM

The real plot behind this game is it is a "what if' scenario.

The game tries to show what the D.C. area would look like if george bush had a third term.

Posted by: jacob | October 9, 2008 3:55 AM

To all you idiots complaining about this game: I can't believe you are calling Bethesda terrorist lovers. If you met Todd Howard or Emil in person, the last thing you'd call them are Terrorists. They're just normal guys that want to make money and have fun doing it. If that's not the American dream I don't know what is. The real terrorists are you disgusting people that want to ban and censor anything you don't believe in. If you are content being sheep that's fine by me but leave those of us that with functioning brains who treasure our individuality out of it.

Posted by: Hierarch | October 9, 2008 4:14 AM

Americans lol, half of you wouldn't know what a terrorist was if he stuck a bomb belt in your face. The worst thing we ever did was let you guys have a tea party. It's no wonder most of europe looks down on you as a bunch of semi developed red necks with a penchant for defence spending. The Irony is it's these very same attitudes that lead to the destruction of the U.S and the rest of the world in the game.

God bless teh americanz lolz

Posted by: Flux | October 9, 2008 5:03 AM

To Flux

Amen to that :)

Bring on Fallout 3 I can't wait

Posted by: Scotslad | October 9, 2008 5:52 AM

@Wippet: Learn before speaking. How is a) something on earth and b) something that can have pseudo-turn based combat c) Single player only be a Halo clone?

The original Fallouts were out LONG before Halo, both out 10 years ago.

Posted by: Rob | October 9, 2008 9:12 AM

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS STUFF IS STILL THERE. TODAY I WENT TO THE METRO CENTER AND STILL SAW THOSE. I AM GOING TO WRITE SOME LETTERS TO PEOPLE. I WAS TALKING TO SOME FRIENDS AT WORK, AND ONE OF THEM APARTENTLY LOVES THIS GAME, AND HE SAID THAT THERE IS ONE PART WHERE THE METRO SYSTEM IS IN THE GAME, AND IT IS SET UP JUST LIKE THE REAL METRO SYSTEM, THIS GAME IS TRAINING FOR TERRORIRSTS I JUST KNOW IT!!!!! MY CO-WORKER WANTS TO BUY THE GAME, I DON'T WANT TO WORK WITH A TERRORIRSTS TIME TO SAY HE SEXUALLY HARRASSES ME.

Posted by: James | October 9, 2008 12:55 PM

this game has the white house in it and terrorists could practice attacks on the white house using this gaem america is advertising its own destructyon to al qkayeda and sarah palin should be made aware of it

Posted by: USA A OK! Yeah!!!! | October 9, 2008 4:14 PM

Looks to be a fun Game, and Flux if the Brits, French, and other Europeon power had not screwed things up so badly the USA would still be a country with a large navy and small army. They also really tried to ignore the rest of the worlds problems.

Posted by: Art C | October 9, 2008 8:10 PM

I am offended by any fictionalized version of the U.S.

Posted by: George Tackics | October 10, 2008 3:45 PM

The only reasons Metro could have posted those disturbing and repulsive images is that it is hard up for cash, or because the thankless job of approving ads has been given to some skeev who, unlike normal people, knows or cares what "Fallout 3" is and is "so looking forward to this game." Probably the same employee that authorized the "make a porno" ads on the sides of Metro buses. Forget Metro as an antidote to Boston's T or the NY subway. So Washington Post, where's the backstory?

Posted by: rekonsIII | October 11, 2008 10:57 AM

I'm laughing my head off from reading all the comments. I'm wondering what these alarmist are like in the real world. :>) Keep up the imagination Bethesda!
