Palm Pre Smartphone Gets A Release Date

Mike Musgrove

Sprint and Palm announced this morning that Palm's upcoming smartphone device, called the "Pre," will be available on June 6 at a price of $199.

Is Palm's new smartphone enough to bring the company back into relevance? Too early to say, but the company wowed over many skeptics at the Consumer Electronics Show this year with its unveiling of the device. (Palm had kept quite mum, however, about when consumers could expect to see the thing on retail shelves.)

Sprint will be the exclusive carrier for the device, which will be available, according to this morning's press release, at Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Wal-Mart and online at for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement. That price comes after counting in a $100 mail-in rebate.

Palm's announcement seems aimed at trying to steal a little bit of thunder from Apple, which is expected to announce a new iPhone just days after the Pre's release.

Anybody out there contemplating a purchase of the Pre? I personally know at least one gadget lover who intends to buy one, as he wants to be able to use a keyboard and doesn't much like the iPhone's touchscreen-based keyboard.
