Colin Powell gets an iPad for birthday, courtesy of his tech-connected son
Guess which prominent Washington insider got an iPad for his birthday this weekend, courtesy of his well-connected son?
That would be former secretary of state Colin L. Powell, who got the coveted Apple tablet computer from his son, Michael K. Powell, who also happens to be the former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
The elder Powell isn’t easy to shop for, said his son in an interview Monday. But he’s an iPhone user so the family thought he’d like the iPad for his 73rd birthday.
“So my mom said to me, 'Can you take care of that?' ” said Michael Powell, who had already ordered one for himself online.
Well, the former FCC chair wouldn't dare pull rank or use connections to jump to the front of any line. That left Powell waiting outside a Best Buy in Springfield before the store opened -- just like many of the other 300,000 customers who also bought an iPad over the weekend.
To improve his chances of finding an iPad, he deployed two relatives to Apple stores around the Washington region and communicated by text message to see who could nab the device first.
But contrary to his worst expectations, the line outside Powell’s local Best Buy wasn’t all that long and in 10 minutes, he was walking out with his dad’s birthday gift.
And on Easter Day, with family, Colin Powell opened his present.
“It’s impossible to get my dad excited about a birthday present but he loved it,” Michael Powell said. “We spent the day playing around with it like geeks.”
