Don't Google it, Topeka it!

In a nod to a headline-grabbing stunt by Topeka, Kan., to rename itself temporarily to "Google," the tables were turned on the city this April Fools' Day.

Instead of the usual multi-colored "Google" logo, search users were greeted by the "Topeka" search bar.

Topeka was among 1,100 municipalities to apply for Google's coveted 1-gigabit fiber broadband network last week.

Instead of doing her job and reporting the many important news stories of the day, "Google's reporter at the Post" Cecilia Kang uses company time to further publicize a Google publicity stunt.

Cheers to Google, Ben & Jerry's and others who make us chuckle on April Fool's Day!

I'm with the first commentor in that I keep wondering where the "tech policy" focus of this section went. You can water down the WaPo just so much.

First thought: Oh man... what piece of malware did I get now?
Second thought: Oh its April Fools
Third thought: Lame

...and doesn't reporting on the April Fool's prank at 6:38am ruin the joke for everybody else? And by the way, thanks for explaining it with the link. Jokes are always funnier when someone else explains them to you.

"kaiserdean" (AKA Duncan Dean) likewise fails to mention that he's from Topeka and appears to be a key player in the City of Topeka's efforts to prostrate itself before the Almighty Google. Thus, he is likely to favor the Post having an in-house reporter who, in effect, lobbies for Google in print. (Look at the front page of her blog, folks; Google is in nearly every one of today's headlines!) But the public needs unbiased, accurate, and relevant reporting.

GOOD GOD - - did you boys have the operation and now are getting PMS??

SICK of your whining and mewling on this site.

Call your mother - see if she'll listen to your peeves and pains.

BRETT - DUNCAN - go mewl at your family and friends instead of here. Maybe they'll contribute to buying you a life.
