World Cup most popular Web event in history

The 2010 World Cup set a new Internet traffic record.

On June 11, the first day of the global soccer tournament, the FIFA World Cup Web site received as many as 12 million visitors a minute at its peak. That's a new record for Web traffic and 4 million more visitors than when President Obama made his election speech on Nov. 4, 2009, according to Akamai, a Web metrics company.

Indeed, the world can't seem to get enough World Cup information, overloading Twitter and other information-sharing sites. Check out this Read Write Web story on Internet World Cup mania.
