Facebook new king of Web, but Google makes up in mobile

U.S. Web users spent more time on Facebook than Google sites last month. But if Google was knocked off its perch as king of the Web, it is making up for it in mobile, according to new data by two research firms.

Google’s Android-based phones and gadgets are expected to be the second-most popular platform for wireless devices this year, gaining greater market share over Research in Motion and Apple’s mobile operating system.

Those are some data morsels released Friday morning that show massive shifts in the Web and mobile industries and how fleeting leadership is in the ultra-competitive high-tech industry.

According to Comscore, Internet users spent 41.1 million minutes socializing on Facebook in August, or 9.9 percent of all the time they spend online each month (Washington Post Co. chairman Donald Graham serves on Facebook's board). Facebook has 500 million users and has been aggressively pushing new features that keep users there longer to share pictures, news stories, network and stay engaged over mobile devices.

That compares to 39.8 million minutes (9.6 percent of time in the month) on Google’s sites, which include search, YouTube, Google docs and e-mail and news. Yahoo ranked third, with 37.7 minutes spent on the firm’s e-mail, finance, news and other pages.

In mobile, research firm Gartner released a report Friday morning that predicts the nascent Android operating system for mobile devices will explode in popularity this year, taking 17.7 percent of the market from 3.9 percent in 2009. That would make it second to the Symbian platform that operates phones for Nokia.

Garter said that by 2014, Symbian will maintain its lead with 30.2 percent of the market. But Android will close the gap, with 29.6 percent share. Research in Motion will fall to 11.7 percent share in 2014 compared to 17.5 percent expected this year. And Apple’s iOS will lose steam with 14.9 percent of the market compared to 15.4 percent this year.

This is not something we should be proud of. Facebook has it's place, but as the most-visited website on the planet? I don't think we were meant to keep up with our high school friends the rest of our lives while not knowing who the majority of our neighbors are.
