Report: Sprint in talks to buy T-Mobile

By Hayley Tsukayama

A report from Bloomberg indicates that Sprint is in talks with Deutsche Telekom to acquire T-Mobile USA. Citing sources “with knowledge of the matter,” the report says that Deutsche Telekom would sell T-Mobile USA to Sprint for a majority stake in the new venture.

Deutsche Telekom’s chief financial officer, Timotheus Hoettges, told Bloomberg in an e-mailed response that “all options are open in the U.S. -- the sale of the whole business or of parts.” Sprint has not commented on the report.

The deal would merge the third- and fourth-largest wireless telecommunications networks in the United States, behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T.
