Thornton leads Gonzaga to title

All-Met guard Tyler Thornton had 18 points, 4 assists and 3 steals to earn tournament MVP honors and lead third-ranked Gonzaga to a 62-59 victory over Mater Dei of California in the Gonzaga D.C. Classic championship game on Saturday night.

It was the fourth consecutive tournament title for the Eagles (6-0), who are idle until Friday night when they play in the Iolani Classic in Honolulu. Guards Cedrick Lindsay and Malcolm Lemmons were named to the all-tournament team.

A Gonzaga prepares to depart Wednesday, Coach Steve Turner was taking pride in his team’s ability to handle a difficult situation. The Eagles trailed 52-46 entering the fourth quarter.

“I was very impressed with how we played down the stretch, especially when we had to come from behind,” Turner said. “I thought the kids played with a lot of poise. They did a good job picking the zone apart and not just settling for threes.”

I guess some mention, however belated and hidden, is better than none.
