City Title games are set

There will be no last-minute planning for the City Title games this year. According to D.C. Public Schools Athletic Director Marcus Ellis, the games pitting the respective boys' and girls' basketball champions from the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association against those from the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference will be played Sunday, March 7, at Verizon Center.

The girls' game will tip off at 2 p.m., with the boys' game to follow at approximately 5 p.m.

Say what you want about the Catholic schools playing on Sunday, but for the purpose of maximizing exposure and a potential audience for this event, this is a very smart scheduling move. The Maryland public schools play their regional championships the night before, which is also when the Virginia public schools play their state quarterfinals. March 7 is also the final day of the NCAA men's basketball season, just before the major conferences begin their tournaments.

Last year, H.D. Woodson's girls beat Good Counsel to claim their second straight City Title, while DeMatha defeated Ballou for its 20th boys' championship.
