Breaking down the Maryland 4A playoff picture

With one week remaining in the regular season, here's the way it looks:

Maryland 4A East Region:
In: Arundel (9-0), North Point (9-0), Old Mill (8-1)
In with a win: Annapolis (7-2)
Needs help: Broadneck (7-2)
Skinny: Arundel can clinch the region's top seed with a victory over Southern (6-3) or a North Point loss to Thomas Stone (0-9). If Arundel loses, with a victory North Point will be the top seed. In the unlikely event North Point and Arundel lose, Old Mill can claim the top seed by beating Broadneck. Annapolis is in if beats North County (6-3) or if Broadneck loses to Old Mill. Broadneck must beat Old Mill and have Annapolis lose to North County in order to qualify.

Maryland 4A North Region
In: Urbana (8-1)
In with a win: Patterson (7-2), Woodlawn (7-2)
Still alive: Thomas Johnson (5-4), Perry Hall (5-4)
Skinny: Urbana likely will be the top seed regardless of how it does against Linganore (9-0). Patterson plays Northwestern (3-6). Woodlawn plays Milford Mill (4-5). If Thomas Johnson beats Riverdale Baptist (5-5) and Perry Hall beats Hereford (7-1) -- or if both lose -- it will be very close to determine the last playoff berth.

Maryland 4A West Region
In: Sherwood (8-1), Paint Branch (8-1)
In with a win: Whitman (7-2), Churchill (7-2), Springbrook (6-3)
Skinny: Sherwood can clinch the top seed by beating Quince Orchard (9-0) or with a Paint Branch loss to Springbrook. If Paint Branch wins and Sherwood loses, Paint Branch will be the top seed. The Whitman-Churchill winner is in and the loser also will advance if Springbrook loses to Paint Branch. If Springbrook wins, then the Whitman-Churchill loser is out.

Maryland 4A South Region
In: Wise (9-0), C.H. Flowers (8-1), Suitland (8-1), Eleanor Roosevelt (6-3)
Skinny: These four teams play Saturday to determine playoff positioning, with Wise facing Flowers and Suitland playing Roosevelt. Wise will be the top seed if it wins, while Flowers has a shot at the top seed if it wins. Roosevelt is locked into the fourth seed.
