Loudoun County Repeats as Dulles Golf Champions

The Loudoun County Raiders stormed past the rest of the Dulles District in Wednesday's league tournament at the South Riding Golf Club, thumping the field by 18 strokes with a score of 297 to claim their second straight tournament title.

Junior Brantley Kushner led the way with a one-under 71 to edge junior teammate Kevin Cook (72) and clinch the individual tournament title. Senior Jon Youst shot a 76 and junior Andrew Brenneman carded a 78 to round out the scoring for the Raiders who added the tournament crown to their first ever regular season championship.

Loudoun County coach John Laycock is still recovering from his second heart attack in a three-month span earlier this season, but convinced his doctor to let him rejoin the team. Out on the links he told me watching the Raiders wrap up another title is the best medicine.

β€œIt pleases me to no end that we had the focus today – when it really counted – to do well,” Laycock said.

The biggest surprise on the day was Potomac Falls, which beat out Briar Woods by a single stroke in a dramatic, eight-man playoff for second place and the second and final regional team berth. Steven Lasik's two-foot putt for par sealed an 19-20 win for the Panthers and first-year coach Ken Johnson - a stunner considering Potomac Falls finished the regular season in fourth place behind the Falcons and the host Freedom Eagles.

In addition to the two teams advancing, Briar Woods will send Adam Ochs (74) and freshman Nick Vazzana (80) to the regional tournament while Freedom's Tyler Blake (77) and Alex Choi (78), Dominion's Shelby Shote (79) and Broad Run's Sloan Meadows (79) will also represent their team's at Shenendoah Valley Golf Club in two weeks. Vazzana needed two holes to beat out senior teammate Jonathan Howard in a playoff for the sixth and final individual spot.

It was quite the dramatic finish to a long day in South Riding.
