Cross-Country: West Springfield girls, Lake Braddock boys win Patriot

Behind individual winner Paige Kvartunas, West Springfield’s girls’ cross-country team won the Patriot District championship on Wednesday, upsetting defending champion and runner-up Lake Braddock. West Potomac and T.C. Williams rounded out the top four teams.

Kvartunas won on the 2.98-mile Burke Lake course in 18:01.

Lake Braddock senior and defending district champion Liana Epstein was leading when she collapsed several times down the stretch. She finished eighth in 18:57.

“It was a little hotter today than probably expected. She was pretty dehydrated,” Lake Braddock Coach Mike Mangan said. “Definitely a pretty scary couple of moments there at the finish line.”

Mangan added that Epstein was released Wednesday night from Fairfax Hospital and that he is unsure whether she will race again this season. “She’s okay and we’re not worried about her [general] health, but running-wise we’re not sure,” he said.

Lake Braddock won its second straight boys’ championship over West Potomac, South County and West Springfield. Lee senior Natnael Meseret was the individual champion in 15:36.
