Cross-country: Brentsville girls, Potomac Falls boys repeat
The girls from Brentsville Tuesday pulled off a mild upset of Western Albemarle to win their second straight Region II cross-country championship in Charlottesville, 64-71. Potomac Falls was third and Loudoun County finished fourth.
Brentsville senior Allison Bartels overcame a slow start to the season to capture her second straight individual championship. She finished the 5K Panorama Farms course in 18 minutes 58 seconds, five seconds in front of runner-up and Loudoun County senior Julie Strange.
Western Albemarle displayed tighter pack running, but Brentsville was stronger up front. The Tigers put two runners in the top five — junior Morgan Price was fourth in 19 minutes 34 seconds — and that provided the winning margin.
In the boys’ meet, Potomac Falls won its second straight title despite graduating lots of firepower from last year’s team. The Panthers easily put Skyline, Brentsville and Monticello in their rearview mirror.
Loudoun County junior Tommy Curtin was the individual champion in 16:08. Senior Alvaro Morales was Potomac Falls’s top finisher in 10th (16:58) but Nos. 2 and 3 runners Nicholas Mogensen and Juan Campos were just one second behind him.
