Virginia volleyball: District tournament previews

Volleyball district tournaments take place this week in Virginia with plenty of regional playoff berths on the line. Here's your guide to each of the district tournaments in our coverage area, including brackets, schedules and news and notes.

AAA Northern Region

AAA Concorde

First Round - 11/2, 7 p.m. (at higher seed)
No. 5 Centreville (6-13) at No. 4 Oakton (16-4)
No. 6 Westfield (6-13) at No. 3 Herndon (10-7)
Bye: No. 1 Chantilly (17-4), No. 2 Robinson (15-5)

Semifinals - 11/3 (at Centrevile)
1 - Centreville/Oakton Winner vs. Chantilly (5 p.m.)
2 - Westfield/Herndon Winner vs. Robinson (7 p.m.)

Final - 11/5, 6:30 p.m. (at Centreville)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • Chantilly's lone loss came against Westfield, but the Chargers knocked off Robinson in a thrilling five-setter to claim the top seed in the tournament. Following that loss, Rams Coach Jill Pearson told her girls to be prepared to see the Chargers again. That next meeting could come Friday in the final.

  • Westfield played arguably the most difficult regular season schedule in the region, which should prepare Coach Jim Bour's squad for the rigors of the Concorde District tournament. With a win over Chantilly already in the bag, the Bulldogs are a big-time sleeper.

  • Oakton was 14-2 before the flu swept through the Cougar roster, claiming several top players and leaving the team shorthanded for its toughest stretch of the district schedule. If healthy, the Cougars could make a splash and reach next week's Northern Region tournament.

AAA Liberty

First Round - 11/2, 7 p.m. (at higher seeds)
No. 8 South Lakes (9-9) at No. 1 Stone Bridge (18-2)
No. 5 Jefferson (6-11) at No. 4 Fairfax (6-14)
No. 6 McLean (3-12) at No. 3 Madison (9-9)
No. 7 Marshall (3-14) at No. 2 Langley (11-9)

Semifinals - 11/3 (at Stone Bridge)
1 - SL/SB winner vs. Jefferson/Fairfax winner (5:30 p.m.)
2 - Madison/McLean winner vs. Marshall/Langley winner (7 p.m.)

Final - 11/5, 7 p.m. (at Stone Bridge)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • Stone Bridge completed a second straight undefeated run through the Liberty and are the odds-on favorite to win the tournament and challenge for the Northern Region title.

  • With Liberty District Player of the Year Elysse Richardson leading the way, Langley could pose the biggest threat to Stone Bridge's title aspirations. Following a 3-4 start, the Saxons won eight of nine to close out the season and enter the postseason with plenty of momentum.

AAA National

First Round - 11/2 (at higher seeds)
No. 8 Mount Vernon (0-15) at No. 1 Yorktown (12-6)
No. 5 Washington-Lee (6-11) at No. 4 Wakefield (8-10)
No. 6 Edison (7-10) at No. 3 Stuart (8-12)
No. 7 Falls Church (1-14) at No. 2 Hayfield (14-3)

Semifinals - 11/4 (at higher seeds)
1 - MV/Yorktown winner vs. W-L/Wakefield winner
2 - Edison/Stuart winner vs. FC/Hayfield winner

Final - 11/5 (at higher seed)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • Yorktown repeated as district regular season champions and remains the favorite to take the tournament title and make a run in the Northern Region. For the Patriots to accomplish those goals, they'll have to regroup after losing star Elyse Bush, who tore her ACL on senior night against Washington-Lee.

  • National District newcomer Hayfield went 6-1 in its first run through the district, with the lone loss coming to Yorktown. The Hawks could become the team to beat with the Patriots missing their best player.

  • Washington-Lee spoiled Yorktown's senior night and bid for a second straight perfect district regular season with a five-set victory. If they can bottle the energy from that upset, W-L could spring an upset or two to reach the Northern Region tournament.

AAA Patriot

First Round - 11/2 (at higher seeds)
No. 8 West Potomac (3-12) at No. 1 South County (16-3)
No. 5 Lake Braddock (10-7) at No. 4 Annandale (14-3)
No. 6 T.C. Williams (8-9) at No. 3 West Springfield (12-5)
No. 7 Lee (3-12) at No. 2 W.T. Woodson (12-5)

Semifinals - 11/4 (at South County)
1 - WP/SC winner vs. LB/Annandale winner (5:30 p.m.)
2 - T.C. Williams/WS winner vs. Lee/Woodson winner (7:30 p.m.)

Final - 11/5, 7 p.m. (at South County)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • The Stallions stampeded to another league title behind standout middle hitter Simone Antwi and Patriot District Player of the Year Lindsay Stephens and are the heavy favorites to win the tournament and earn a high seed in next week's Northern Region playoffs.

  • West Springfield was the only team to push South County, losing 3-2 on the road last week. If the Spartans can get past Woodson to reach the final, they could give the regular season champs a run for their money.

AAA Northwest Region

AAA Cardinal

Osbourn Park and Forest Park (18-1) will play a tiebreaker match on Monday to decide the automatic region berth and the top seed for the district tournament, which begins Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets swept Forest Park early this season, but the Bruins returned the favor in the rematch on Oct. 20 and have won 12 straight.

Semifinals - 11/3 (at Freedom-Woodbridge)
1- No. 4 Woodbridge vs. Winner of Osbourn Park/Forest Park (5:30 p.m.)
2- No. 3 Potomac vs. Loser of Osbourn Park/Forest Park (7 p.m.)

Final - 11/5, 6 p.m. (at Freedom-Woodbridge)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • The Yellow Jackets and Bruins were several rungs above the rest of the district all season and anything other than an OP-FP final would be a massive upset. Both coaches also believe a fifth meeting in the Northwest Region tournament could be in the cards.

AAA Cedar Run

Semifinals - 11/3, 7 p.m. (at higher seed)
No. 4 Osbourn at No. 1 Loudoun Valley (16-4)
No. 3 Battlefied (13-6) at No. 2 Heritage (13-7)

Final - 11/5, 7 p.m. (at higher seed)
Osbourn/LV winner vs. Battlefield/Heritage winner

Quick Digs

  • The Vikings were perfect in the regular season and enter the postseason on a 12 match winning steak.

  • Heritage pushed Loudoun Valley to five sets on Oct. 22 in Purcellville and have the best shot of any of the other three teams at knocking off the top seed.

AA Region I

AA Battlefield

Semifinals - 11/3 (at King George)
1 - No. 4 Spotsylvania vs. No. 1 Chancellor (16-4) (6 p.m.)
2 - No. 3 Culpeper at No. 2 Courtland - (7:30 p.m.)

Final - 11/4 (at King George)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • Chancellor ran roughshod over the rest of the district this season, sweeping their way to a 14-0 record against Battlefield opponents without dropping a single game. Last year's AA state finalists should roll to another district tournament title and will once again be a factor in the AA Region I tournament.

AA Region II

AA Dulles

First Round - 11/3, 7 p.m. (at higher seeds)
No. 5 Potomac Falls (4-14) at No. 4 Freedom (10-10)
No. 6 Dominion (4-15) at No. 3 Briar Woods
No. 7 Park View (7-13) at No. 2 Broad Run (15-3)
Bye: No. 1 Loudoun County (18-2)

Semifinals - 11/5 (at Loudoun County)
1 - PF/Freedom winner vs. No. 1 Loudoun County (6 p.m.)
2 - Dominion/BW winner vs. PV/BR winner (8 p.m.)

Final - 11/7, 7 p.m. (at Loudoun County)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • With a 3-1 win in Saturday's playoff, Loudoun County clinched the automatic berth into the Region II tournament. They've also now won four consecutive Dulles District titles and will be the favorites in a tournament that concludes on their home floor in Leesburg.

  • Broad Run split the regular season title with Loudoun County - their first since 1991 - and has enough firepower to ensure at least a runner-up finish, if not a tournament title of their own.

AA Evergreen

Fauquier and Kettle Run (17-3) will play a one-game playoff at 6 p.m. Monday at Liberty High School to decide the top seed in the tournament. Whichever team wins receives the automatic bid to the region tournament and will also host the district semifinals and finals this week.

As if things weren't complicated enough already, there will also be a playoff for the fourth and final spot in the district semifinals between Liberty and Warren County. That match will also be played Monday night.

Semifinals - 11/4 (at top seed)
1 - Liberty/Warren County winner vs. Fauquier/Kettle Run winner (6 p.m.)
2 - No. 3 Brentsville vs. Fauquier/Kettle Run loser (7:30 p.m.)

Final - 11/5, 7 p.m. (at top seed)
Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner

Quick Digs

  • The Cougars and Falcons split their regular season meetings with each school winning at home by a 3-1 score. They both made it through the rest of the district schedule unbeaten, so a fourth meeting in Thursday's title game is a distinct possibility.
