Volleyball: Region quarterfinal results, all-region teams

Here's your look at the scores and highlights from Tuesday's Virginia region quarterfinals as area teams continue their marches toward the state tournament.

Northern Region

First Round - 11/9
No. 1 Hayfield (ND) def. No. 4 Oakton (CD) 24-26, 26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 15-13
No. 2 Langley (LD) def. No. 3 West Springfield (PD) 25-14, 25-15, 25-20

No. 2 W.T. Woodson (PD) def. No. 3 Madison (LD) 25-23, 25-19, 25-13
No. 1 Robinson (CD) def. No. 4 Edison (ND) 25-19, 25-11, 25-7

No. 1 South County (PD) def. No. 4 Fairfax (LD) 25-19, 25-5, 25-17
No. 2 Chantilly (CD) def. No. 3 Washington-Lee (ND) 25-4, 25-16, 25-10

No. 3 Herndon (CD) def. No. 2 Yorktown (ND) 3-1
No. 1 Stone Bridge (LD) def. No. 4 Lake Braddock (PD) 25-11, 25-15, 25-14

Quarterfinals - 11/10
(LD2) Langley def. (ND1) Hayfield 25-21, 25-21, 25-11
(CD1) Robinson def. (PD2) W.T. Woodson 3-2
(PD1) South County def. (CD2) Chantilly 25-20, 25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 15-12
(LD1) Stone Bridge def. (CD3) Herndon 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 12-25, 15-11

Semifinals - 11/12 (Centreville)
(LD2) Langley vs. (CD1) Robinson, 6 p.m.
(PD1) South County vs. (LD1) Stone Bridge, 8 p.m.

Final - 11/14, 6:30 p.m. (Centreville)
Langley/Robinson vs. South County/Stone Bridge

Skinny: Langley swept National District tournament champion Hayfield on the road in an upset, but perhaps the more surprising score on the night was South County's five-set victory over Chantilly. The Stallions were the higher seed and had the luxury of playing on their home court, but this has to be one of the biggest wins in program history -- especially after the Chargers dismantled them early on in the non-district schedule. . . . Stone Bridge did just enough to squeak past Herndon without the services of junior second team all-region setter Amanda Miller (broken fibia), but the Bulldogs will certainly have their hands full against the Stallions....Meanwhile, the Saxons are peaking at just the right time and could make things interesting against a Robinson team coming off a tough five-set victory over Woodson.

Northwest Region

Quarterfinals - 11/10
Albemarle def. Heritage 25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24
Osbourn Park def. Patrick Henry-Roanoke 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15
Loudoun Valley def. Colonial Forge 25-18, 30-28, 25-14
Forest Park def. Franklin County 25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17

Semifinals - 11/12 (at higher seed)
(CD2) Osbourn Park at Albemarle, 6 p.m.
(CD1) Forest Park at (CR1) Loudoun Valley, 6 p.m.

Final - 11/14 (at higher seed)
Osbourn Park/Albemarle vs. Forest Park/Loudoun Valley

Skinny: Near the end of the district season, Forest Park Coach Jonathan Bukva said he wouldn't be surprised to see Cardinal District rivals Osbourn Park in the region final. The Bruins and Yellow Jackets have already faced off four times this season, splitting their meetings with Forest Park claiming the regular season district title and Osbourn Park taking the most recent match for the league tournament title. They're each one win away from a decisive fifth meeting with the Northwest Region title on the line. . . . Loudoun Valley was swept by Forest Park early on, but that was before the Vikings tweaked their offensive set, which keyed a 14-match winning streak. The big question mark for the Bruins in this one will be whether or not senior middle hitter Kellie Goss is fully recovered from an ankle strain suffered in the district tournament final that kept her out of Tuesday's quarterfinal. Goss leads the team in kills and her health is a major factor to watch leading up to this match.

Region II

Quarterfinals - 11/10
No. 1 Western Albemarle def. No. 8 Fauquier
No. 4 Sherando def. No. 5 Broad Run 25-19, 26-24, 27-25
No. 3 Kettle Run def. No. 6 Fluvanna County 22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 15-13
No. 2 Loudoun County def. No. 7 Millbrook 25-17, 25-5, 25-15

Semifinals - 11/12 (at higher seed)
No. 4 Sherando at No. 1 Western Albemarle, 7 p.m.
No. 3 Kettle Run at No. 2 Loudoun County, 7 p.m.

Final - 11/14, 7 p.m. (at higher seed)
Kettle Run/Loudoun County vs. Sherando/Western Albemarle

Skinny: Those hoping for a fifth meeting between Loudoun County and Broad Run in the region final were denied their wish as Sherando had just enough firepower to sweep the Spartans out of the tournament, concluding the program's best season since 1991. . . . The Raiders, had no such trouble as they dispatched Millbrook with ease to set up a semifinal matchup with Kettle Run. Loudoun County beat the Cougars 3-1 on the road in its season opener on Sept. 2.
