UPDATED: Virginia AAA football changes

[Update, 10:15 p.m.] The VHSL just announced that the Virginia AAA state semifinal contest between No. 7 Lake Braddock and No. 3 Battlefield will now be played on Monday night at Liberty High School in Bealeton. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

This is the third time a game or games have been rescheduled to Liberty. The Northwest Region quarterfinal round featured a triple-header and Osbourn's semifinal contest against Massaponax was moved there as well.

Saturday's snowstorm has forced the postponement of two Virginia AAA football semifinals scheduled for Saturday afternoon until Sunday, a decision the schools’ athletic directors said was reached to avoid transportation-related concerns.

In Division 6, seventh-ranked Lake Braddock’s game against No. 3 Battlefield has been moved to 3 p.m. Sunday, while Massaponax will visit No. 8 Stone Bridge at 2 p.m. in Division 5. One of the sites being considered for the Lake Braddock-Battlefield game Sunday is Liberty High in Bealeton.

Lake Braddock was planning on taking as many as 11 school buses to Haymarket, and Massaponax, located near Fredericksburg, faced a 75-mile drive to Ashburn.

“We all wanted to get them in, but it just wouldn’t have been intelligent to have people out there driving and trying to get to the games,” Battlefield Athletic Director Ben Stutler said.

Stutler's counterpart at Stone Bridge, Dave Hembach, said members of the school’s maintenance staff will arrive at 9 tomorrow morning along with several of the team’s coaches to help get the field cleared and even repaint the field with blue lines if necessary.

When reached by phone just after 1 p.m., Stutler said that four inches of snow covered the school’s parking lot and field Saturday morning. He then consulted with Lake Braddock Athletic Director Mark Martino and decided to make the move to Sunday.
