Two weeks ago, we reported that Broad Run head football coach Michael Burnett was leaving the Ashburn school to take a social studies department chair job at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg. Wednesday, the school -- which opens in the fall -- announced Burnett has officially been named the Huskies head football coach.

A twelve-year coaching veteran, Burnett spent four seasons at Broad Run where he turned a 1-9 team into the top AA program in Virginia. In December, he led the Spartans to a second consecutive undefeated season and Division 4 championship. He compiled a 43-6 record in his time at Broad Run and received multiple coach of the year awards during the team's two perfect seasons.

Tuscarora Athletic Director Derek Farrey, also announced the signing of varsity cross-country and golf coaches in a press release issued Wednesday night.

Becky Puterio, an assistant cross country coach at Broad Run the last three years, was named the inaugural coach of Tuscarora's program. She currently coaches Girls on the Run at Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School and has been a volunteer coach with the Loudoun County Track and Field youth team. Puterio, who also served as an assistant at Potomac Falls, ran for Mary Washington University during her collegiate career and currently teaches fifth grade at Frances Hazel Reid.

Filling out the fall coaching staff is Jeff Kaplan, who becomes the first golf coach in school history. A 16-year veteran of the teaching and coaching ranks, Kaplan currently teaches health and physical education at Smart's Mill Middle school and is an assistant basketball coach at Heritage High School in Leesburg. He graduated from Frostburg State University in 1990 with an exercise physiology degree and was a member of the baseball, football and rugby teams.

The Huskies will compete at the AA level and will join the Dulles District for every sport except football, which is in the midst of a two-year scheduling cycle in Loudoun county.
