Press Break The Post's Rundown of Local and National College Basketball
Top of the Arc - January 12, 2009

Jan. 12, 9 a.m.: Hold off on the North Carolina coronation. We officially have a race in the ACC.

Coming into the weekend, Wake Forest was one of three undefeated teams. But while the victory at Brigham Young was impressive, Wake Forest had a strength of schedule rating in the 200s. Last night’s 92-89 victory over North Carolina puts the Demon Deacons at the forefront of the ACC race. And they remain one of the nation’s best stories, considering how they kept a talented recruiting class together after the tragic death of Skip Prosser.

As for North Carolina, the Tar Heels are 0-2 in the ACC for the first time since 1996-1997. “We’re 0-2 and we’ve got to try to play better and be more effective,” Tar Heels Coach Roy Williams told the Greensboro News & Record. “I’m still looking at then big picture … It is not over after two games.” I still consider North Carolina a slight favorite in the conference, but now it looks like a four-team race. And the national title race is more wide open that it looked a few weeks ago.

Check back a little later today for a break down of the nation's best freshmen ...
