Press Break The Post's Rundown of Local and National College Basketball
Top of the Arc - February 9, 2009

Feb. 9, 8:30 a.m.: Take a look at the tournament resumes for two teams and tell me which is stronger:

Team A
Record: 15-8 (4-5)
RPI: 68
Strength of Schedule: 50
Road/Neutral court: 3-6
Vs. Top 50: 3-7
Vs. Top 100: 5-7
Last 10 games: 4-6

Team B
Record: 13-9 (4-7)
RPI: 37
Strength of Schedule: 1
Road/Neutral court: 3-6
Vs. Top 50: 3-5
Vs. Top 100: 6-9
Last 10 games: 3-7

Team A is Maryland. Team B is Georgetown. The separation between the teams suddenly is very small. Maryland has the better record, but the Hoyas have the stronger RPI, strength of schedule. Maryland has the Michigan State win, Georgetown has the Connecticut victory. The Hoyas were expected to be a tournament team this season, while Maryland was not. After sorting through the bubble teams late last night, Georgetown was one of my last teams in, and Maryland was on my list of the first eight teams out. But Georgetown next plays at Syracuse, and Maryland has home date against Virginia Tech. At this point, there is a good chance neither team makes the NCAAs.
