The Atlantic 10 announced today that it will continue to stage its men's basketball tournament in Atlantic City through the 2011-12 season. However, the tournament's opening-round games, featuring the teams seeded fifth through 12th, will be played at the arenas of the higher-seeded teams.
Since 1996, all Atlantic 10 tournament games had been played at the site of the event.
Next year's first-round games are scheduled for Tuesday, March 9. The tournament will continue March 12-14. The final, which previously had been played on a Saturday evening, now will be played on a Sunday afternoon and will be televised for the first time by CBS. The final previously was televised by ESPN.
As in recent years, the top 12 teams in the 14-team conference will qualify for the postseason tournament, with the top four teams receiving a bye into the quarterfinals.
The Atlantic 10 has held its tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City since 2007.
