According to a story posted this morning on the Memphis Commercial Appeal's Web site, Memphis Coach John Calipari met with his players to discuss his interest in the Kentucky head coaching job, and a source said the players "left the meeting convinced that Calipari would take the job."
The Associated Press is reporting that Kentucky has received permission from Memphis officials to talk to Calipari.
Calipari led the Tigers to the NCAA tournament title game last season and to the round of 16 this season. He also led Massachusetts to the Final Four in 1996, an appearance that was vacated by the NCAA because of rules violations involving star center Marcus Camby.
Kentucky announced on Friday that it would not retain Billy Gillispie has coach. The Wildcats lost to Notre Dame in the third round of the National Invitation Tournament this season, finishing with a 22-14 record.
